No, they are crunchy and flaky. They get a little soft in the middle where they come into contact with the pastry cream (or pastry cream softened with whipped cream)

I'm on it!!!"

Yes, Lee!! She also wrote The Sugar Queen. Her books make me hungry!! If she writes one about pretzels or popcorn I'll be in big trouble!!

message 2654: by [deleted user] (new)

I loved Garden Spells. I should pick up her other ones too. Of course, maybe after my mini-diet.

Quit licking the screen, Christine! lol

Welcome back little book-mountain climbing Hayes! :)

One more day in Germany.....

Have a good one, everybody!

Manybooks Real Black Forest Cake with whipped cream (not too sweet), sour cherries and Kirschwasser (or cherry juice if making it for children). I'd rather have real slightly sweetend whipped cream with cake, as I find most frostings too sweet.

And, I also love yeasty coffee cakes, or Bavarian Plum Cake (which is a plain yeast dough topped with fresh prunes and crumble topping, great with whipped cream, and makes a decadent breakfast).

Carrot cake is nice, but I usually prefer my own (whole wheat flour, brown sugar) to the extremely sweet ones usually sold in stores. I sometimes add both fresh apples and fresh carrots, which I can certainly recommend.

Susanna - Censored by GoodReads (susannag) | 529 comments A really good pound cake for me, please. You can skip the frosting, a light sugar glaze is fine for me.

Mona, that sounds completely decadent. I bet adding a bit of dark rum would make it taste even more tropical, yummy. Do you drain the pineapples first, or just add the entire can?

message 2660: by Mona (new)

Mona Garg (k1721m) | 492 comments Gundula, Yes, it's yummy but it's been a while since I made it. Dark rum would be a good addition too but then I probably would have to limit my portions( maybe a good thing :) )

As I recall,I don't drain the crushed pineapple because it makes the cake moist.

Mmmmmm, yes!

This reminds me of Nigella Lawson's delicious gingerbread cake with lemon glaze icing. It's fantastic.

Well, we could. Too many more of these threads and I might. ;-)

ETA: One cupcake down today already. Yum! Didn't need it as have been eating most meals out for the last week so the extra calories were not at all needed. Ah well. Delicious anyway.

I finished my book. It was so sad....I need cake now.

Good morning everyone! Finally beginning our journey to Norway! It's our last day in Germany. I'm looking forward to some cooler weather. (did I just say that??)

message 2667: by [deleted user] (new)

Awful hot here too Jeannette. Feels like August already! And my son, such a generous boy, gave me his cold. So I am in bed sweating in the heat and feeling lightheaded. A good excuse to turn off the computer and read!

Hope everyone has a good day.

message 2668: by [deleted user] (new)

Feel better, Hayes! Be safe, Miss Jeannette!

message 2669: by [deleted user] (new)

We're off soon! Stay safe and happy everyone!

message 2670: by Kathy (new)

Kathy (readr4ever) | 1853 comments Hayes, I also want to thank you for a great picture today! Yum, yum! Lee, I will post my momma's recipe for Jam Cake later today. Blackberry preserves is the jam ingredient in it. The icing is, well, better than sex (yes, I said it), as it is a caramel frosting. Oh my, mouth is watering uncontrollably.

Dang, I saw The Sugar Queen at Border's yesterday for 3.99, should have bought it. I'm reading Still Alice and recommend it highly already (halfway through). It is about a 50-yr.-old woman who is a professor at Harvard and has been diagnosed with early onset Alzheimer's. It's fiction, but it is very realistically scary.

Caramel icing? Okay, you've got me. I want that.

Jeannette, have a wonderful time in Norway!

Hayes, I am suffering with a summer cold too which my daughter passed on to me so we can be miserable together.

message 2672: by Mary (new)

Mary | 245 comments Oh girls, I have a summer cold as well. The one going around here comes with a dry, hacking cough. I sound like an old smoker. :( Feel better Hayes and Lee.

Have fun, Jeanette.

And, Kathy, we NEED the recipe for that jam cake!!

message 2673: by Kathy (new)

Kathy (readr4ever) | 1853 comments I promise to post the jam cake recipe this weekend. I've had several things going on this week, besides reading a lot. My poor doggie, Abbie, is in bad shape with her hip. She's almost 10 and a half, and she is really having trouble walking now. I'm taking her into the vet in the morning and hopeful that she can get some meds that will help. Tomorrow is baby boy's birthday (son will be 23), and I am driving to his college to pick him up. I have a cake ordered, and he told me today that he is planning on having a party here tomorrow night. Yikes, whatever happened to asking your mom if it would be okay to do that. I guess he knows I'm easy and will be fine with it. Oh, I found a great little shop with a couple of friends today and bought my son a unique little table with camels carved into the legs of it. It was only $12.00. I bought several unique items there. The prices were great! My friends bought some stuff, too. Such fun, and we had lunch, too!

Happy Travels Jeannette!

Hayes, I feel better as well. Your mystical powers are quite potent!!

message 2678: by Kathy (new)

Kathy (readr4ever) | 1853 comments Doggie is back from the vet. She is suffering from arthritis in her hip (which was what I thought), and she was given some pain medicine and needs to take a joint medicine, which is actually a human over-the-counter medicine. She should feel better soon. Yesterday I had to feed her dog food to her by hand because she wasn't able to bend over to eat it. It was canned dog food, rather messy to say the least.

I am leaving shortly to go pick up my son. We just had a rain shower, and I'm hoping it won't rain tonight. Sonny boy is supposed to have his little party outside, in the back. I don't want to think about the party moving inside.

Manybooks Kathy wrote: "Doggie is back from the vet. She is suffering from arthritis in her hip (which was what I thought), and she was given some pain medicine and needs to take a joint medicine, which is actually a hum..."

You know, Kathy, I remember that my grandparents had the dog dish raised on a type of pedestal, so the dogs (all quite elderly) would not have to bend over as much. Maybe you should check if something like that is available, because you don't want to end up feeding the dog by hand every day. Not only is it messy, but the dog might get used to this extra attention and demand being fed by hand regularly. I hope that the medication works. Did the vet also give Abbie a shot? From reading the James Herriot series, I seem to remember that he often gave shots to arthritic dogs and that the relief was both fast and miraculous.

message 2680: by [deleted user] (new)

My sister has a few rescue dogs that have major medical issues, and they eat off of pedestal dishes as well. Kathy, I hope that she feels better with the meds.

message 2681: by [deleted user] (new)

P.S. Kathy, Happy Birthday to your son!

message 2682: by Manybooks (new)

Kathy (readr4ever) | 1853 comments No shot for Abbie, Gundula. I probably should have asked about one, dang it! Thanks for the pedestal dish idea, Gundula and Christine. My 9-yr.-old granddaughter had actually suggested putting the food on a small stool, and I'm going to try that here in a few minutes.

Actually, with my grandparents' dog pedestal, the dog dish could be secured onto the pedestal, so that the dogs could not push the dog dish off (or maybe it was placed inside a type of hoop to secure it, I don't know, it was ages ago). And, if your dog is not feeling better by Monday, take her back to the vet and ask for a painkilling shot, I'm surprised this was not offered.

message 2686: by Maude (new)

Maude | 479 comments Kathy, you might want to look in at a Pet Store - they probably have different sizes/types of pedestals. They also have those pillow cushions which might help him (if he will use it!) I feel so sorry for animals when they are hurt and you can't make it better right away - and they NEVER ever blame you. And yes, I agree - he should have gotten the shot.

Scout (goodreadscomscout) I tried the mystical hand movement, and my resentful son appeared. Maybe doing the hand movement while hopping on one foot will produce cupcakes - or at least relieve some stress:)

message 2695: by Kathy (new)

Kathy (readr4ever) | 1853 comments Thanks for all the great information about a pedestal dog food dish. I'm planning on getting one the first of the week. For now, I have her regular food dish on a low stool, a good temporary fix.

Oh, my son's party last night went very well. I could hear several of the guys, including my son, playing their guitars on the back porch and everyone singing. Ah, the sweet voices of youth! My daughter and her family were here today. My youngest granddaughter waves now--hard to believe how excited I am over that--and she's getting her first teeth in.

*creeps back to the drawing board*

Glad the party was a success Kathy!

Scout (goodreadscomscout) Oh, Hayes. You don't know what it means to me to have some company. Are they ever not hungry?

What type of cupcake would appear in your mystical hand movement fantasy?

message 2698: by [deleted user] (last edited Jun 12, 2010 11:44PM) (new)

I prefer muffins, actually. Not as sweet. Blueberry Bran, or Carrot, or something with a lot of whole wheat and grains.

My beast is about to turn 13. He is 5'7" and wears size 45 (EU) shoes, which I think is an 11, give or take a half size. Frightening. Every time I look at him he is bigger than before.

I think I will have to buy a pitchfork to keep up with the appetite!

How old is your son, Scout?

message 2699: by Scout (new)

Scout (goodreadscomscout) Mean sixteen. We're speaking two different languages.

I just picked my first crop of blueberries from the bushes in my back yard. I washed them off and sat down and ate them, and they were so good. There's nothing else like fresh anything, is there? Are blueberries grown in Rome? I've planted tomatoes and bell peppers and eggplant in my small garden. I watch them grow every day, and the results are just miraculous.

message 2700: by [deleted user] (new)

No blueberries here. Too hot and dry.

*sigh* big fat blueberries with a dusting of sugar and two drops, maybe three, of lemon juice. Or just plain off the bushes...

Lovely blueberries up north in the mountains where we go every winter, and often in the summer. They are very small and have an intense flavor, incredible really.

I'd love to have a garden. I have to settle with watching the basil grow in its pot. I tried tomatoes one year, but I let them dry out (pot too small) and there was no calling them back to life.
