I HATE flying now because, like you said, the airlines are so cheap. But I thought it would be better on international flights. On DELTA, they didn't even give you a bottle of water--the crew just came around with glasses of water on a tray.

I'll have to check out your blog

Tiramisu-- mmmmm, one of my fave desserts.

How are the clothes prices there?

And, since you are now not even allowed to bring your own bottled water on the plane, the airlines should at least be giving out whole bottles of water. Also, glasses of water are not hygienic, I feel for anyone who easily picks up infections or has a compromised immune system. And, while I can understand the safety concerns that prompted airlines to no longer allow passengers to bring their own bottled water along, the airlines should have a duty to keep passengers hydrated and to have ample water available (if need be at an extra cost).

Why can't you bring your own water onto a plane??? I find that shocking.

message 2606: by [deleted user] (new)

Because you might be a mad bomber with explosive chemicals in your bottle of water! I think it's ridiculous too. For the amount of money they get for the plane fare they should have a person on the embarkation ramp with bottles of water for everyone!

Things have just gone too far. For god's sake just about anything could be a weapon.

Checking in is a lot of fun too... you have to undress (practically) to go through the metal detector without your shoes, belt, bracelets, necklaces, etc. Your computer has to be taken out of its carrying case to go through the x ray scan... It's such a hassle.

Good grief, the first line of the first post I read this morning (okay, so it's noon) is that I have to undress to check in. Well, thank goodness I was only down to my underwear when I read the rest of it. LOL! Methinks I'm in a silly mood.

message 2610: by Mona (new)

Mona Garg (k1721m) | 492 comments But, I've seen people with bottles of water on the plane. Maybe they're allowed if you buy them from the stores by the boarding gate after you pass thru security.

Yes, I think that you can buy water and other drinks at the airport after going through security and carry these on board.

Yep, once you are through security then you can buy them (what is that, like $10 for a bottle of water?).

Am I wrong to laugh at that, Christine? I know it wasn't what you probably needed him to say at that moment, but I think it's a great little tension breaker. Your son is awesome!

Joy | 314 comments I was patted down like a criminal at the Amsterdam airport last week and at another airport we had to step into one of those contraptions that does a full body scan of you! Travelling just isn't the same anymore. Remember when flying was fun?!

On a different note, I found this info on the Dragon Tattoo book tours -

Well, I can understand being patted down at the Amsterdam airport. The most recent almost terrorism bombing incident occurred on an airplane that flew out of Amsterdam, and the Amsterdam security authorities have been rather strict since then, as there was a lot of official blaming and name-calling being thrown around. I have not traveled for a while, but I would rather be patted down and have my body scanned than blowing up in mid-air (I just think that all passengers should be checked, singling out some passengers is racially profiling and unfair).

message 2620: by [deleted user] (new)

My daughter, 16, 5'8" and 110 pounds (stick girl) got patted down, again! (This happens to her on a regular basis.) I think it's the underwire bra! lol (Please, do not tell her I posted that, omg!) They used to ask for my permission, but now she looks like an adult. Icelandic Air lets you bring 2 suitcases, but they sell you food! They came by once with water, so I pushed the little stewardess button. I hate taking my shoes off, cuz then you have to pad around in your sox and gather up all that stuff. I am always convinced I have lost something!!

Hayes, I love that word, embarkation!!

Mona Garg (k1721m) | 492 comments Jeannette, is your daughter on GR? Does she read the posts in the group forums?

Christine, I really don't see why they don't let you bring your own SEALED water bottles. They always rob you blind in those airport stores(and hotel gift shops, in-room mini bars). My daughter knows that we don't buy stuff from those stores and has been trained NOT TO TOUCH items in room mini-bars. Room service is out. The rates are outrageous.

We stayed in a hotel recently where I was even charged a 20% gratuity for purchasing at the counter!!! All I ordered was a chocolate croissant and iced coffee. And then there was a line on my receipt to fill in a tip!

Hi everyone!

Kathy, you shameless thing! Put your clothes back on!! Good thing Jeannette told me to keep an eye on Christine.

Hi Jeannette. Nice to see you arrived safe and sound.

I'm off to the Dentist today to finish up the root canal job. He has to start "building" the new tooth. Hope everyone has a great day.

message 2625: by [deleted user] (new)

Sorry to hear you have a dentist appointment planned for today, Hayes! :( I guess I should have told you to keep an eye on Kathy, too. lol

Mona, my daughter is on GR, but she doesn't log on much, so I'm safe. :0) She isn't on Comfort Reads, either!

Off to a nice lunch and a visit to a museum now! Have a great day, everyone!

It's nice to have Jeannette in my time zone! I don't feel so lonely posting early in the morning.

Dentist was no problem, he just prepared the cap and closed up previous work, which is a relief.

Now off to the post office, which might be worse than the dentist!

Kathy (readr4ever) | 1853 comments Hayes, I just felt sorry for the poor yard guys outside my window. LOL! Jeannette, I promise to behave from now on. Christine, yeah, I feared that Hayes was in for a real torture session, too. Glad it wasn't, Hayes.

My daughter and her family are back from their vacation, and I get to go see my granddaughters tomorrow. Yay! I guess I should explain that they live an hour away so you all will understand why I wouldn't have already been on their doorstep the minute they got home.

I plan on reading and being lazy today, and I need to order a birthday cake for my soon-to-be 23-yr.-old baby boy.

message 2632: by Mona (new)

1) Anything with chocolate
2) Carrot cake
3) Coconut layer cake

Anything with thick frosting and no fruit goop in the middle!

message 2635: by [deleted user] (new)

Oh, thank the Lord! Emma and I were supposed to leave for a swim meet in an hour. It's been raining all day (which doesn't make them cancel unless it's lightning), windy, and blech. The meet is about an hour and a half away. But! The temperature has dropped so I just got an email that they cancelled. I feel guilty for being so happy about this, but it would have been dreadful. So I guess I'll read! :)

message 2636: by [deleted user] (new)

Hooray for cancelled swim meets and goopless cakes! Make mine devil's food with chocolate buttercream frosting. *yum*

Good night Hayes! Have a good evening everyone! :)

message 2637: by Lisa (new)

Lisa Vegan (lisavegan) Lots of chocolate frosting with whatever kind of cake: chocolate, vanilla, spice, anything, but the thick chocolate frosting is a must. Except thick vanilla frosting sometimes works, especially with lemon cake or other flavors of cake that don't work as well with chocolate. (I'm a cake frosting person.)

I think I'm the opposite to everyone so far. I like the cake more than the frosting. I just like a thin layer of frosting unless it's carrot cake and cream cheese icing. Yum.

I've never had Coconut layer cake. Is that a southern specialty?

message 2641: by Joy (new)

Joy | 314 comments I like angel food cake with strawberries on top. My grandma used to make that and in every birthday card she sent she would write,"If I were there I'd bake you a cake." I write that in cards myself to carry on the tradition..:)
Here's a recipe (although I haven't tried it) -

Kathy (readr4ever) | 1853 comments I love chocolate cake with a creamy white icing. However, I had a scrumptious strawberry cake with white icing at the wedding last weekend, as well a chocolate cake. But then there's German chocolate cake and jam cake. Maybe jam cake is my favorite, as my mother made a melt in your mouth one, and my mother-in-law makes a great one, too. Oh, and I used to make a to-die for chocolate steam cake with thick rich chocolate icing--all from scratch, no mixes. Oh, and the chocolate-cherry cake I used to make. Gee, is there a bad cake? LOL!

message 2643: by [deleted user] (last edited Jun 08, 2010 11:25PM) (new)

Morning Jeannette! Morning (later) everyone else too. Thanks for the recipe Joy.

Cake! You all are bad for my diet!

I'm with Lee. The cake is better. Don't like goopy frosting, and NO whipped cream and NO liqueur, which is what the italian cakes are like (white or yellow cake, soaked in some uggy alcoholic something and layered with whipped cream) and I loathe them.

My favorite is mille foglie con fragole. I guess that would be mille feuille with strawberries.

The wedding cake we had last week was good too. Yellow cake (no alcohol!) bottom and top and in the middle all kinds of fruit chopped into small pieces, bits of yellow cake in small pieces and just the slightest touch of chantilly cream. Divine!

message 2644: by [deleted user] (new)

Good Morning Hayes! I hope everyone else is still snoozing away. :)

What yummy things to wake up to. My mother-in-law made us a very plain cake this time: ground hazlenuts and chocolate in the batter, with a thin glaze. She's going to give me the recipe, & I'll see if I can translate it into English measurements.

I make my daughter an angel food cake for her birthday every year, from scratch. I hate wasting the egg yolks, so my dog always get a few scrambled for her birthday.

Have a great day everyone. :)

message 2645: by [deleted user] (new)

Good morning! I've been up for hours already, but finally checking in. I was up late reading Every Last One (almost done), and then up early to take Emma to the pool. Christine be sleepy!!

You guys are killing me with the cake talk. I'm trying to be good about what I eat after indulging on my trip. But after these posts I feel like going out and buying an entire birthday cake for myself (Stephanie Plum style).

Mary | 245 comments Joy, thanks for that recipe. Sounds yummy! And Hayes that photo is deelish!

Lee, I don't know if coconut cake is specifically Southern but two dear friends from the South also love it so it may well be. I think the secret to a good coconut cake is to make it light and fluffy and not too, too sweet.

Interestingly, cakes are prominently featured in the book I am currently reading,The Girl Who Chased the Moon, which, by the way is wonderful comfort read.
