Fran | 21 comments Thanks for the warm welcome. I am excited to get to know all of you. It sounds like you all have busy mornings like I do. Even though I work from home I still need to be up early. It is really nice to see that you all are starting your day discussing what you did the night before or what the plans are for the day. My morning starts with that very 1st cup of heaven, coffee. That is the 1st and only thing I can think of when I wake up. I love flavored coffee creamer. Ahh Life is Good. How about you? What is your heaven when you wake up?

message 2360: by Dawn (new)

Dawn (dawn9655) My heaven when I wake up is coffee. No cream, no sugar, just dark, rich coffee.... I don't even bother with the breakfast part until I get to my workplace.

message 2361: by Kathy (new)

Kathy (readr4ever) | 1853 comments Gee, I really pay the price for being a late morning sign-on, and this is rather early for me. So much going on already. Hi Fran, welcome, and coffee is my cup of heaven in the morning, too. I prefer Dunkin Donuts brand, regular coffee, and just black. Later in the day, I sometimes fix the DD French Vanilla. At night, it's decaf. As a little plaque I have states, "Given enough coffee, I could rule the world." I'm also a fifties girl, Fran.

Dawn, I've only been to Savannah once and loved it. My daughter and her family are getting ready to go down there for a week's vacation. Her parents-in-law have a house there that they bought for two of their kids to use while attending Savannah College of Art and Design. The last one graduates this semester, so my daughter fears that they will sell her free place to stay. LOL! They love going there.

Jeannette, mothers rule, daughters drool. LOL! I don't feel bad playing the "I paid" card at all.

message 2362: by [deleted user] (new)

Hi Kathy! My daughter drew the card all by herself! lol

I drink tea everyday, all day. My favorite thing in the morning is 15 more minutes in bed!

You are too funny, Jeannette!

message 2364: by [deleted user] (new)

My favorite thing in the morning is when the boys have left the house (one to school, one to work) and I get to have my second (or maybe third!) cup of coffee all by myself and plan what I'm going (or not going) to do during the day.

Fran | 21 comments Are there any empty nesters out there? I am getting very close to being one. My youngest is 22 and is planning on moving soon. I feel a little guilty that I am kind of excited for the empty nest.

Yes, Fran, I'm not only an empty nester, but my husband lives away, too. He's in the military. Don't feel guilty about being a little excited. I never thought that I would enjoy the kids living elsewhere or being by myself, but I'm enjoying the heck out of it. Of course, it helps to have great friends that I get together with, too. I do like my "me" time, though.

message 2367: by [deleted user] (new)

One more year for me Fran and then my only child heads off to college. I am just starting to deal with it....

message 2368: by Fran (new)

Fran | 21 comments It is a little scarry for me. When my oldest son moved I was heart broken. He is the funny one in our family. It really was quiet here and I really missed him. My younger one is hardly home anymore. He is my lazy boy. I am really kind of burnt out picking up after him. He is a great kid and more on the quiet side but he can be a slob.

Susanna - Censored by GoodReads (susannag) | 529 comments Savannah is wonderful, well worth a trip (like Charleston).

My morning doesn't start until I have a Diet Coke. (I like my caffeine cold and bubbly.) Don't drink coffee, as I would put far to much cream and sugar in it if I did, so I stick to hot tea.

That is so funny Savannah. My older sister is a cold caffeine drinker. She won't even drink hot tea.

Dawn (dawn9655) I adored Savannah. So green! Just a beautiful city. I'll have to head back there one day.

Mary | 245 comments Greetings girls! Just jumping in here to say hello. Welcome to Fran. I am an empty nester as well. My daughter just finished her second year of college. When she first left it was quite an adjustment for me and for my husband but I have learned to love my quiet days at home. I have also learned that just when you've got the empty nest thing down pat and are really loving it, they are home for a break!!

I've been an 'empty-nester' for about 15 years. I absolutely love it! I like being able to do what I want when I want to. If I want to lay around reading all day on a Saturday, there's nothing to stop me.

The boys stop by often enough to make them almost annoying :) And I do see several of my grandkids on a regular basis.

LOL, Mary! My son, whom I adore, of course, has been home since last Friday night, and I am beginning to want my house back. I'm glad he feels comfortable having his friends over when he's in, but my family room is a mess right now, and I am ready to reclaim it. He does pick up his dishes now, but still it somehow becomes a man cave. My husband will be in tomorrow night, so I might as well resign that room to a man cave for a bit longer. Grrrrr.

I love the description "man cave" ha. But, I have to admit that I am certainly not the neatest or the most organised person. I usually have books floating around all over the place (I need more bookshelves); yesterday I tripped over my mega-pile of books in the bedroom. But, bookshelves can be problematic as well, often when I put books in bookshelves, I have trouble finding individual titles again, they just sort of disappear from view, like I cannot see the trees because of the forest.

Susanna - Censored by GoodReads (susannag) | 529 comments A friend of mine has his "Man Cave" as well! It's in the basement of their house.

message 2381: by [deleted user] (new)

My poor husband doesn't have a man cave, not even in the garage. He's just tidy, I guess, and he doesn't have "manly" kinds of hobbies, either. :)

message 2382: by Mona (new)

Mona Garg (k1721m) | 492 comments Jeannette, you're so lucky. Practically our entire house is hubby's man cave. He's got his stuff everywhere. Tidy he is NOT!

Hubby doesn't have "manly" hobbies either but if he doesn't watch sports, he watches a LOT of cartoons, anime,sci-fi...

message 2383: by [deleted user] (new)

I have to admit: my stuff is all over the house! We watch movies together as well as playing board games. I am pretty lucky! :)

message 2384: by Mona (new)

Mona Garg (k1721m) | 492 comments I do admit that I am not the neatest but I'm better than him. Sadly, my daughter has taken after him in the neatness department. He has his endless paperwork everywhere and I tell him that's what his office at work is for. My daughter's room is like an obstacle course. And they both ask ME when they can't find something.

Hubby and I watch movies together too but there's some of his that don't interest me and vice versa. I enjoy SCRABBLE but it's hard to play when my daughter is up. He enjoys the crosswords in the paper but often asks me to help when I'm trying to read or when I'm reading to my daughter.

I saw 2 movies yesterday:
LAW ABIDING CITIZEN(w/hubby)-- I enjoyed this but would have preferred a different ending

PRECIOUS(alone--hubby couldn't stand it b/c of subject matter and profanity) -- I liked it and I liked the ending.

Mona Garg (k1721m) | 492 comments Jeannette, gotta go--real life calls.

message 2386: by [deleted user] (new)

Me, too, Mona! (sorry)

My husband likes to read out loud from his book while I am reading mine. He's at work all day, so I try to cut him some slack. I get "me" time at night when he and my daughter play video games. :)

I think my husband suffers from not enough action movies -- I just don't enjoy them. But he'll watch just about anything, even anime and all the BBC period dramas! He even enjoys most of them.

message 2387: by Mona (new)

Mona Garg (k1721m) | 492 comments Jeannette, real life is not as fun as GR sometimes :).

This sounds really bad but I would rather hubby not read. When he reads, that's ALL he does besides work, eat, hygiene & sleep. He brings the book to meals, stays up late to read...

Sometimes, I do read stuff aloud to hubby and vice versa, usually comic strips, advice columns, etc. I get my ME time when they are watching cartoons--I just can't get into them.

I don't mind action movies. I don't care for fantasy(FINAL FANTASY etc) or anime. I enjoy foreign films, art films, films based on true stories. Hubby doesn't care for films based on true stories. He says he would rather watch a documentary. He enjoys NOVA(all topics),FRONTLINE,INDEPENDENT LENS. I watch those depending on topic.

message 2388: by [deleted user] (new)

We watch almost anything at my house, except horror/slasher stuff. I don't like much violence, either, so stuff like the Matrix or Batman he watches on business trips. My daughter and I love anime and he'll watch it, too. My daughter watches the more cartoony stuff by herself or with her friends.

We all like to read at my house, but my husband isn't close to yours! How funny to say "I wish my husband would not read!" I bet there are a few women who wish their husbands did read. I just wish my husband wouldn't laugh out loud while he's reading!

message 2389: by Mona (new)

Mona Garg (k1721m) | 492 comments Jeannette, We do watch horror/slasher sometimes but I'm more of a suspense/thriller fan. I've seen a couple of the BATMAN & SPIDERMAN films. I wanted to see DARK KNIGHT out of curiosity because of Heath Ledger's performance as the Joker. I couldn't really get into the MATRIX films either.

My daughter watches many different cartoon programs, both on TV & DVD. Some I can tolerate and watch with her, others she watches with her dad, and others on her own. She also enjoys computer games. We have not gotten her a video game system yet but I'm sure she and hubby will enjoy that. I'm not sure about me. I've never been a fan of video games.

Another thing about hubby's reading habits: he gets annoyed if I don't finish the Sunday paper in a timely fashion. I read practically every section so it takes awhile. Then I would put it on his nightstand where it would start to pile up(double standard--but he says he doesn't take him nearly as long to read it) and stress him out. I tell him I could just recycle it when I'm done but NOOO. The same with the DVR. He claims that cleaning out the DVR is stressful and wants to leave enough room for my shows. But not only will he cancel his series he adds more.

I'm not sure if women would want their hubbies to read like mine does :) What is your hubby reading that he's laughing out loud?

message 2390: by [deleted user] (new)

Believe it or not, my husband is reading from Bernard Cornwell's Sharpe books. He really likes Sharpe and his attitude.

I used to watch horror films, but my husband is a big chicken! So, I got out of the habit and have become quite soft-hearted in middle age. How old is your daughter? What kind of anime does she watch?

message 2391: by Mona (new)

Mona Garg (k1721m) | 492 comments Hubby read all of the HARRY POTTER books in the way I told you he reads. He used to actually try to sneak the next one in the series by me :). He's actually quite well-read. He's read a lot of the classics: CRIME & PUNISHMENT, TESS, THE IDIOT...

I enjoy horror films but I regret watching them when hubby is on night shift :) My mom's the chicken in our family. Even scary music creeps her out.

My daughter will be 5 next month. She watches AVATAR: THE LAST AIRBENDER with hubby. She also likes superhero stuff, dinosaurs, etc. She's really not into the typical princess stuff.

message 2392: by [deleted user] (new)

My daughter was like that at that age -- she never was, still isn't, very pink and girly. She watches Batman, X-Men and such with her dad (she's 16). They are watching something right now; they watched the end of Golden Eye a couple days ago,

The first horror film I saw with my husband was "The Thing" and he wanted to flip the channel during the "intense" bits. I said to either watch it or not! lol Such a chicken.....

Mona Garg (k1721m) | 492 comments Jeannette, I know you said you don't like violence/horror/slasher films but have you seen ORPHAN? Yes, it does have some violence but it's more like a suspense/thriller. Maybe your husband will be able to watch without switching the channel :)

Oh, I was wrong about PRECIOUS being based on a true story. It's fiction.

message 2396: by [deleted user] (new)

Well, I'll look up the reviews for Orphan. I am so weird in the last few years. If I am watching anything suspenseful, I can feel my blood pressure go up! And not even the really scary stuff -- I have just gone into empathy over-drive, I guess!

I haven't watched Precious. I think it got way too much hype and caused me to avoid it.

message 2397: by Mona (new)

Mona Garg (k1721m) | 492 comments PRECIOUS did get a lot of hype just like AVATAR. And generally when that happens, the film falls short of expectations. But I was curious. I enjoyed THE BLIND SIDE. But my brother read the book which he said was very good. He also said that the character Sandra Bullock played is not as prominent in the book. She did a good job. The movie is about 2 hours but didn't feel long.

The novel PUSH is on my to-read list though. I watched all the special features on the DVD and the book looks interesting. I think Mo'Nique and the girl who played PRECIOUS did a great job. Mo'Nique's character was disgusting, repulsive, and hard to tolerate.

Kathy (readr4ever) | 1853 comments My computer, or rather my Internet connection, has been playing havoc with my goodreads access the past couple of days. I couldn't get on until this afternoon today, after my son did his magic with the computer and the modem and all that stuff that I don't want to know about, I just want it to work. Anyway, just quickly on the "man cave" when my son and/or husband is in. I guess I shouldn't complain too much because the rest of the house is mostly about me and my tastes, which usually means lots of books in lots of places. However, I am doing much better about keeping my books organized and not just spread out anywhere. I'm trying to keep them on shelves and in baskets, and I vow to continue the weeding that I started when I was preparing for the garage sale. I seem to be on a big reorganizing/weeding kick in general these days. I think I've finally just gotten tired of all the "stuff." I even cleaned out underneath my bed this week. My oh my, what has gotten into me again? I think I told you all that my cleaning streak was over. Actually, I think that I want to get some painting and redecorating done, and I know that I have to get rid of some of the mess first.
