Kathy (readr4ever) | 1853 comments Oh my, when I miss a couple of days, there is a lot of catching up to do. Suffice it to say that the garage sale was a big success. We were all happy with our take, and being all together was such great fun. I love the grandkids being around their great-grandmother and great-aunt. With the 9-yr.-old spending the night with me last night and most of today and taking her back and eating dinner with my daughter and her family, I feel like I got a whole lot of loving them in this weekend. I did eat a few donuts, Jeannette, but luckily I was too busy to indulge too much. Also, Jeannette, congratulations on your daughter choosing a college, and you are going to Germany and Norway. I am so jealous! Christine, it sounds like you are going to have a fun vacation, too. Hayes, the animal pics are so cool!

Hi Kathy! That is so nice that you have so many generations together at one time! You are very blessed, but I'm sure you know that. :)

I haven't decided how I feel about the college search being done. It makes it all kind of final.

Have a donut for me next time -- I love donuts!

I'll be back on June 2. I can't do facebook (there is a story behind this, but I can't explain) so hopefully I'll hear updates from someone else.

Check in before you go on Friday(?). I'll be able to say "hi" from Germany, but most likely not from Norway. I don't know what kind of internet we'll have on tour AND we will be busy.

Have a good week and a fun trip if you're too busy too chat much this week. We are trying to wrap up school before June.

Did you know that you can have "lunch with an astronaut" at Kennedy Space Center?

Morning Girls! Sun today, for a change. We spent the weekend doing a little DIY project:

48 hours of solid, crashing down rain. I have really had enough!

It's the 17th of May and I still have the feather duvet on the bed and am still wearing wool socks. In past years we spent weekends at the beach on the 15th of May!

message 2210: by [deleted user] (last edited May 17, 2010 05:07AM) (new)

Hayes, Your animals look so cheerful in the face of a major weather disaster, haha!

Jeannette, I'll be checking in this week until Thursday. Maybe I'll catch you when I get back and before you leave.

I hope that everyone has a good morning. I'll be trying to make book choices for my days away. I definitely need comfort reads after my last book, which emotionally kicked the stuffing out of me.

message 2211: by [deleted user] (new)

Have a great trip Christine. Happy reading!

And I spoke too soon about the sun. At 11:35 am the sky opened up and the rain came crashing down again. But it's back out again now. I'm going bonkers.

message 2212: by [deleted user] (new)

Good morning everyone! It finally stopped raining here and we got our annuals planted in the beds. Now we need some warmer weather. I came pretty close to building an ark last week myself! :)

Take something fun with you on vacation, Christine! I'll be on a bus with 30 kids, so I won't be doing much reading.....

message 2213: by Kathy (new)

Kathy (readr4ever) | 1853 comments Good morning ladies! I plan on taking it easy and recuperating from my busy but fun weekend. So far, it doesn't look too busy this week--couple of eating outs with friends, picking up my son from school, and just daily stuff. We started getting rain yesterday, too, and it's supposed to be hit and miss this week. I love the ark, Hayes! The animals and people do look a bit too happy about the rain though. LOL! Christine, let us know what books you pick out to take on your trip. Jeannette, the donuts I had were chocolate long johns, yummy. I usually don't indulge with donuts, but I used the festive gathering as an excuse to do so.

message 2214: by [deleted user] (new)

Paula | 184 comments Morning, all!
Hayes - the pics are still making me smile! No clue how you did that, but the deer with the flying saucer ears is my favorite.
Kathy - great job with the weekend sales! No way could I have skipped on donuts, I love donuts!
Christine - best of luck with the crazy week ahead!
Jeannette - hope you can still stop by and say 'hi' periodically, we'll miss you while you're on your European tour of music!
Lee - thanks :)
Lisa - you're funny; you're not at all boring!!

As for me - I spent the entire weekend outside trying to make my front lawn appear half as nice as my neighbors. Anyone who says gardening isn't exercise needs to feel the same pain I'm in this morning! I'm in such a good mood after a weekend of yard work and sore muscles :) Even got to sneak an hour of sun-reading in (of course!)

When I was a kid we walked to school past a bakery. Once in a while my mother would give me a nickel to buy a "lunch stick," basically a vanilla-frosted longjohn. It was heavenly and, of course, a taste I will never capture again.

Ah, a bakery is good. My route to and from school passed a "candy" store, or at least that's what I called it. I'm sure that it must have had other items, but all I remember is that there was lots of candy for sale there, including those great wax lips of old. We had great walks to school, didn't we Jeannette?

Except in the winter, when the boys in the class would hit me with snow in the face. But, let's dwell on the donuts and wax lips (I liked candy cigarettes, myself.)

Hi Paula! I'll be around until the beginning of June. I am looking forward to the tour and staying with host families.

It was nice to get out and dig in the dirt, wasn't it? I bought zinnia plants this year. I love to cut them for inside!

Yes, I love playing in the dirt! I have decided to completely start over for our front landscaping - everything goes! Now, the tricky part will be finding stuff that is colorful and grows well in a shady spot... The search is on!

Susanna - Censored by GoodReads (susannag) | 529 comments I remember they still had holiday packaging of cigarette boxes, with the suggestion that they were a fine gift for your teacher, when I was a small child.

Not sure if I had candy cigarettes or not, though.

Manybooks When we lived in Germany, we lived on a farm and rode our bicycles to school. We hardly ever were allowed to tarry after school to buy candy etc. at the local village grocery store. When we moved to Canada, though, the candy store was within walking distance, so we went crazy and bought tons and tons of candy during our first years in Canada (which resulted in multiple cavities).

Thanks. The deer one is great, isn't it. Bettie found that one, and I filched it immediately! Posting pics is easy... I'll work out some simple instructions which I will post somewhere. Won't be able to get to it for a few days, however.

I am in awe of you gardening people. When I was at my daughter's yesterday, I saw all the work she had been doing on her front yard, the landscaping and planting, and I was amazed. It was just beautiful! She didn't learn it from me. I admit my limitations, and I'm hiring someone to landscape my front. Maybe I should hire my daughter. Hmm. I'm sure your yard will look beautiful, too, Paula.

message 2231: by Paula (new)

Paula | 184 comments I sure hope so. The yard across from us is part of a regular local garden tour, so it's tough competition. The last owner had a landscaper come in every year, but now 4 years later it's pretty obvious we haven't continued the landscaper tradition! Honestly, I just love the excuse to be outside all day and still feel productive.

Mona Garg (k1721m) | 492 comments Christine, have a nice trip!!! You're brave, I don't think I could handle Disney in the Florida heat. We were just in Orlando a couple weeks ago and we didn't go.

We went to a neighborhood rummage a few weeks ago for only a couple hours and even then my daughter was whining about the heat and how tired she was. Towards the end, hubby had to carry her. I just can't imagine her tolerating the heat and long lines.

Mona wrote: "Christine, have a nice trip!!! You're brave, I don't think I could handle Disney in the Florida heat...."

I love to play at Disney with my kids. They love all of the biggest rides, and we have a great time together. Disney is also awesome to my son due to his disabilities. It's a perfect type of trip for him. Long lines aren't an issue for him fortunately because they allow him to bypass the big ones. Otherwise I would never attempt the trip for him.

message 2234: by [deleted user] (new)

We took my daughter when she was 11 and she really enjoyed it! We really liked Epcot. When we went that had something like Fastpass, where you sign up for a time at the entrance to the ride, and then come back and get right on at your assigned time. Where else will you be going, Christine?

message 2243: by Wendy (new)

Wendy (literaryfeline) Hello, Everyone! Sorry for my absence. Looks like I have a lot of catching up to do! It's been a rough couple of weeks. A family friend was diagnosed with a brain tumor and died shortly after. Anya's (my youngest cat) has had a few down days, and so I've also been dealing with that. (Sorry for being so depressing this morning-not the best way to start the day.)

I hope you are all well and having a good week so far. I'll check in again this evening after work.

message 2244: by [deleted user] (new)

Oh, I'm sorry, Wendy. :(
I noticed that your blog was a little quiet for a bit too so I was wondering how you were. By the way, if you have any good suggestions for me for my Kindle, let me know. You always pick stuff that I love. I hope that Anya ia doing better too.

Sorry to hear about all of your sadness, Wendy. How awful to lose someone so suddenly.

I hope Anya improves. My cat (the black devil) is in today for hernia surgery.

Glad to have you back. Hope your days get better. :)

We loved Epcot. I could have skipped the Magic Kingdom and spent another day in Epcot. The French pastries in the little cafe were wonderful. :)

message 2248: by [deleted user] (new)

My husband and daughter don't do rides very well -- motion sickness! I used to handle roller coasters better than I do now. They tend to give me a headache -- my brains get bashed around. lol (ouch)

message 2249: by [deleted user] (new)

Quick update: An hour after we dropped him off, the vet called to say the black cat was up and not very happy! :) He did well with his surgery; his brother will pay for it.

message 2250: by Kathy (new)

Kathy (readr4ever) | 1853 comments Christine, I have a great report for you. One of my friends just returned from Disney World yesterday, and she said it was a fantastic time to go. It wasn't too hot and the lines weren't too long at all. I think you are going at a good time, before a lot of schools are out, so you should have good luck with the lines, too. From my friend's report, May seems like the best time to go. And, Vero Beach should be nice and warm, too, but not sweltering.

Wendy, so sorry about your friend, and I hope your cat is doing better. You certainly have a right to sound down today. Be extra good to yourself right now.

Hmm, Jeannette, care to expound upon the Tiki Room? I don't roller coasters, either. Besides the headaches, I am a big chicken. Bawk, bawk!
