Jessika Hoover (jessalittlebooknerd) Thanks Hayes, Christine, and Jeannette! I'm going to need it!

And Hayes--I'm not quite sure yet. I'll probably finish what I'm working through right now (The Shining--Stephen King) and then we'll see where my bookshelf takes me! :)

My son finishes up this week, too, and I know he'll be glad to have another semester under his belt, should have another year. Good luck Jess and enjoy your time off.

I've always been creeped out by The Shining, it's a good movie, but too frightening for me. I remember watching it with a friend of mine on video; he fell asleep, while I was freaking out.

Great picture Kathy! Thanks for sharing that with us!

You all finish school so early in the US! School here finishes June 10th this year. And the University classes finish end of May, but the exam period goes on to mid July. We start later too, of course, in mid September.

Good morning! My family took me out to dinner last night for Mother's Day! (It is impossible to go out without a huge line on the actual day.)

Nothing exciting planned for today. Just wrapping up the current school year and planning for the next. Have a fun day everyone!

What kind of restaurant did you go to? I always want to know what people are eating.

message 2062: by [deleted user] (new)

It is called The Cafe. It is kind of modern cuisine meets home cooking. We all eat fish, maybe twice a month at my house (I'm a bad vegetarian). So I had fish tacos with a chipotle mayo. The other two had diablo shrimp pizza (they make great wood-fired pizza). We started with a cream of asparagus soup. One of the other entrees was asparagus and ricotta cannelloni. It had arugula in the sauce, so I went with the tacos.

They use local, seasonal ingredients. The menu is always changing and they bake great bread and pastries, too. You can't get in there on Friday night!

I know that Kathy is still snoozing, but where are the rest of you today? It's been quiet this morning. Hope you are all doing something enjoyable.... :)

message 2066: by [deleted user] (new)

I'm checking in...good morning! It's rainy and yuck here, but we have lots of school work to do anyway so that's okay.

I finished The 9th Judgment last night, and I am renewing my vow....I will not (and I mean it this time) read any more Patterson books. I need to stick to it this time because this guy keeps getting my money and he doesn't give me anything new for it.

Have a goo goo morning!

Aha, I am awake. It does seem rather quiet on here this morning. Jeannette, The Cafe appears to be an interesting place to eat. The changing menus sounds intriguing, and the local ingredients is nice, too. I'm supposed to head out to see my son today. He is in the middle of finals week at college, and I am going to review with him what he needs to be taking this summer and next year. He didn't realize that when he transferred from his first college that there are a couple of general ed requirements he needs to fulfill. I don't rely on advisers at the college. You need to know what you're doing and what your plan is yourself--or have a mother that knows. LOL! I just don't want him to waste anymore hours at this point. Next year should be his 4th and final year, although he may have to go another semester, not sure yet. That's one reason I need to sit down with him. Ah, we mothers wear so many different hats, don't we? Mine is college adviser today.

message 2068: by [deleted user] (new)

I am so happy to hear that you are willing to wear the college adviser hat, Kathy! I get so tired of hearing -- Let the student be responsible, blah, blah... Well, nobody is looking out for your son the way you are! :) Good luck!

It is cold and rainy and yucky here, too. I am printing out all of the Board meeting documents from this past season of the choir. I should have done this every month, but, oh well....

NO MORE Patterson! I mean it! :)

message 2070: by Jessika (new)

Jessika Hoover (jessalittlebooknerd) Thanks everyone! It feels great to finally be done for the summer! :)

And yes, The Shining is very, very creepy! The movie is the scariest one I've seen, which is saying a bit because usually I think scary movies are just cheesy. And the book is even creepier because it delves more into the psyches of the characters. Loving it!

Amen to that, Jeannette. The college adviser doesn't have the time or interest to devote to your child.

Iowa State has been putting staff on forced furlough (4 days off without pay) this past year. An adviser I know says he deletes all of the email that comes in those 4 days. So, what happens to the kid who wonders why the adviser never wrote back??

Where is your son going to school? I know I asked before, but I ask everyone these days. People flee when they see me coming! lol

message 2074: by Kathy (new)

Kathy (readr4ever) | 1853 comments Jess, I am embarrassed to admit that I haven't read The Shining, even though I loved the movie. It's my favorite creepy, scary movie that I especially like to watch when it's snowing outside (to go along with the movie). I am going to try and rectify my error in not reading the book, but it might creep me out more than the movie. I love some Stephen King and can't bear up under the bizarre in other. The Girl Who Loved Tom Gordon is one of my favorite books period, but King's Rose Madder had my head spinning. Other King I've really like are Delores Claiborne, Misery, The Green Mile, and The Shawshank Redemption.

Western Kentucky University. That's where I got my Masters from. He started out at University of Kentucky, where I got my undergraduate degree from, but he laid out a year (after a friend died in a parachuting accident) and then decided to transfer to WKU. It's a better fit for him, with its rolling hills and beautiful campus, more of a comfort school than UK was for him. He also loves the philosophy department at WKU and has become friends with one of his professors.

So Christine is ready to read The Vagrants The Vagrants by Yiyun Li .

message 2080: by Manybooks (new)

Manybooks I just got back from the dentist. I had all of my old filling replaced, along with some which I got in Toronto a few years ago that were falling apart, all in all eight filling, so my mouth feels like cotton. And, since I usually get a bit of a headache from the freezing, I'm trying to relax a bit, maybe I won't have to take an Advil. I tried to drink some water and it spilled all over me (thankfully, not on the keyboard). I would like some lunch, but I think I will wait until both sides of my mouth are thawed out.

Did you catch your book, Christine? Also, this group is not particularly good if you are trying to limit your book orders, it's just too tempting to read about all of the great books everyone is reading.

So do I. When I was younger the thawing out of the freezing was generally worse for me than the needles etc. themselves, but I don't react as badly anymore. But, I'm glad that I finally got it done. Hope everyone else is having a good day.

message 2083: by [deleted user] (new)

The upside to this is: the new fillings should last another 10 years with proper care. I'm on 90% crowns now.

The last time was pretty safe. I was talking to a zookeeper who was eating her lunch on a bench. The bench was across the way from the rhino enclosure. While I was talking to the lady, I noticed the rhino sort of ran at the wall of the enclosure nearest to our position. (He couldn't get close to us.) I asked, "Did he just charge at me?" And she said that he "was very protective of her and she had never seen him charge anyone like that before!" I was happy that I was outside the enclosure. :)

Oh, he (she?) is gorgeous! I hope you are ok, Jeannette! Must be scary, really.

My friend Bettie, up in Sweden, was charged by a Moose/Elk. I will now go check where you live Jeannette. Dint know they had wild piggies there.

Is it the same or just similar to what Italians call cinghiale? (The ones Obelix eats all the time).

Looks like he has fewer tusks. The males can be pretty fierce! The females too if they have piglets. Yours in the picture looks more like a mum than a dad.

Friends of ours have them in their back yard and they regularly chomp up the iris bulbs!

message 2091: by [deleted user] (new)

Good morning to everyone! The only animal that has ever charged me is Dixie, and I think it's because she wanted my scone. I lead such a boring life. :)

Busy day ahead, yuck. Have a good start.

That is a javelina and we met him and two of his ladies in Chiricahua national Park in Arizona on our U.S. honeymoon back in January 1993. We were strolling through a meadow-like area and came upon them foraging. Wildlife photo-op! Well, my film camera took two shots and then rewound, rather noisily. The boar charged us, but in a kind of arc, towards and then away. He stood there looking rather menacing!

You cannot outrun these animals, all the trees were these skinny scrub pines. Can't go forward and afraid to turn our backs on the guy. I noticed softball-sized stones lining the path and told my husband (several times) to pick up a rock. I thought we could frighten it by throwing rocks at it. As my husband bent down, the boar did charge, in earnest this time. And my husband (of two months) beaned this moving beast just below the eye, on that big jowl!! The animal stopped to reconsider and let us turn around and make it back to the ranger station.

My hero had played handball (team-style, a cross between soccer and basketball) for years and he still has an accurate throw. But he hit this running animal from about 50+ feet on the face! Seventeen years later, I still like to brag about him!!

message 2093: by [deleted user] (last edited May 12, 2010 07:13AM) (new)

Wow! No, you can't outrun them... they are very fast and very strong too. The European wild boar are fearless. The Arizona cousins too, obviously, as he charged two humans who are much bigger than he was.

You were lucky, indeed. And good aim on the throwing arm!

message 2094: by [deleted user] (new)

The park was crawling with these animals at night! I am so glad we were in a camper. The park ranger said they would have to relocate this guy out into the wild.

I think you are talking about wild boars and they can be pretty dangerous. I know that in Europe, they have all kinds of legends and fairy tales of rampaging wild boars that threaten villages and devastate forests. I think it might be a bit of an exaggeration, but during mating season or a sow protecting her young can be very dangerous. When we still lived in Germany, we saw them regularly, and they must be approached with caution. One time, one of them (a big sow) chased our ponies (with us on top) because she had her babies with her. Jeanette's picture looks smaller than a wild boar, but any member of the pig family can be dangerous if it attacks or charges.
