Paula -- good job with your fantasy football league! And I commiserate with Green Bay. It's just not fair to see Favre playing for the Vikings and winning!
Gundula -- When my husband first came to the US (he worked here for 3 mos. during his PhD studies), he was very pleasantly surprised by football games! He went to see the Lions and he said "People had their kids there and there weren't any huge fights." He really enjoyed it! His game is team handball, so he had to stop playing when we moved to the US. So now he's a big football fan, but he hates baseball. :)

Good to find a few people who feel this way. I read Agatha Christie over and over again.

Another fan of Sue Grafton here! I just got her newest book, "U is for Undertow." Otherwise, I've read them all...
Morning! I picked a book yesterday just because a friend had been pushing me to read it, although I really wanted a comfort book...and surprise, I think it's totally a comfort book for me. I'm loving it already. It's
Also, I wanted to tell you guys this just because I find it cool. A friend emailed me that she saw Anita Diamant's note on my book blog. I said, "What note?"...never even saw it there even though it was back in November. I love her, I can't believe that I missed it. I hope it's not rude that I didn't reply.

Green Bay? Oh no...Bears fan over here. ;)

I love the Olympics too. Total junkie.

Christine, how neat that Anita Diamant left you a note on your blog!
I can't wait for the Olympics to start. My family is going to have a fit because I ususally don't watch much tv and let them have it on whatever channel they like (treehouse). There will be some tears for 2 weeks in February!

She said the writing style was just so smooth it made the book really enjoyable.

I thought you would think so! :)
I have been an Olympics fan since I was transfixed by the skating of Janet Lynn at Sapporo in 1972, when I was five. I have fond memories of watching the 72 and 76 summer games with my grandparents.
Ice Dancing... Torvill and Dean just blew me away!! what year was that... will go look.
EDIT: 1984
EDIT: 1984
In my opinion, there has not been an ice dancing pair approaching the magic of Torvill and Dean, and I don't think there ever will be.
I've actually given up. But, as I am in the process of switching my main focus from German literature to English and German children's literature, I've actually gotten more academic ideas since joining GR (especially from the Kindred Spirits, Children's Literature and Girls School Story groups).
My to-read list has been growing exponentially since I joined GR! I'd better turn off the ping so that I don't drop everything every time an email comes in, as most are from GR. LOL!
And, I've not even added all of the books to my bookshelves that I have already read, as I keep adding to-read books.
My to-read books aren't just on my virtual shelves either. I've been indulging in too much book buying as well. I can just see the other books bristling as yet another joins their ranks on the read-me-next shelf.

I'm pretty sure I need to see a doctor for my book addiction....naaa, actually I don't want a cure.

I honestly don't think that I have ever been in a bookstore without having bought at least one book (and only buying one book takes an amazing amount of willpower).
Friends and family do even ask what I want for my birthday or christmas anymore, gift certificates for the bookstore!!
Gundula wrote: "I honestly don't think that I have ever been in a bookstore without having bought at least one book (and only buying one book takes an amazing amount of willpower)."I did that once and I think I've been traumatized ever since.
Hey guys, I just want to let you know. I'm in the process of moving so I may be absent for many hours at a time over the next week or 10 days. I will check in at least once a day. I spent all day today cleaning our new apartment and it's still not done. I can't believe the stuff people leave behind!
Lee wrote: I can't believe the stuff people leave behind! No small children, teenagers or pets, I hope.
I was vacuuming under the stove and behind the fridge and there dessicated cat poo. I also found a George Foreman Grill in one of the cupboards.
Lee, My sympathies! At least you're getting things clean before you move in your personal stuff and your family.
Lee wrote: "I went through about 2 gallons of vinegar. My hands are pickled. :-)"
Wiping afterwards with bicarbonate in water helps take the vinegar smell away.
Good luck with the move! Think of the opportunity, however. When we moved (10 years ago) I was able to dispose of (give away, throw out, etc.) mountains of stuff as I was taking it out of the boxes. Somehow I couldn't make that decision when I was putting it all into the boxes... I think we might need to move again, so I can repeat the process! (kidding, kidding...)

Thanks Hayes! I've also been making some great discoveries on my bookshelves and it's generating some new shelving ideas to encourage me to read some of my unread treasures.

Oh, I did this not too long ago...it's so much work. I hope that it goes smoothly for you (now that you have found the cat poo, hopefully that will be the end of the yucky stuff...ewwwww).

Good luck, Lee! We moved last May - what an ordeal that was. And there was a mixup, so the gas company turned off the gas at our new house. We didn't realize it until the end of the move-in day - a Friday night - and weren't able to get hooked up until Tuesday! It was still cold then, going down to 0 degrees at night, so we froze. And what a pain (literally) to wash dishes and things in cold water! Fortunately we were able to go and shower at the gym.
Ack!! Gabriele... what a nightmare!
I can't say I envy you, Lee! But, I won't add to the horror stories or think about how a cat got behind the fridge. I'm assuming this move is an upgrade? Is the weather in Toronto nicer than it is in Iowa? I've moved across the continent and across the ocean twice, so I've kind of settled where I am! :)
When my family immigrated to Canada, there was some sort of problem with the moving company and we had to live in a house with basically no furniture except for beds and a cheap kitchen table for almost three months. What a pain!!
My furniture made it from Germany to Mississippi on time and mostly undamaged! But, it is a nervous several weeks waiting for the stuff. You wave goodbye to the container truck and keep your fingers crossed!
My sister-in-law who has moved between Holland and North America a few times, says that they lose stuff with every move. We're still looking for a few odd things that surely nobody would bother to steal (pajamas, bike helmet, etc.), and we moved only 3 km!
Well, that was a long time ago, and they did not actually misplace it, it just took extremely long (also, I was just a kid at the time, I just remember how weird it was with no furniture and that my father actually started smoking again, after having given it up for four years).Actually, one of the weirdest things that ever happened to me was that when I sent a bunch of boxes of books by mail to Canada at the end of my one year student exchange at the University of Mannheim, one of the boxes arrived in Canada with different contents. Instead of my academic books, the box contained a stinky sweater, mouldy nuts and a bunch of cookbooks. I've never been able to figure out exactly what happened, but I believe that some boxes probably opened up and got damaged on route and were repacked wrongly.
For my move from Seattle to Iowa, they boxed and tagged my cooking pots and THEN packed the box in a wardrobe box. Three days of panic looking for my expensive cookware! They also were so friendly as to take a wet dishrag off the kitchen sink and put it in a box. Very nice surprise 3 days later!

Someone got your books! We had stuff from a move in storage once and when they delivered our things, they brought an extra sofa (similar last name)! They called a week later asking if we had someone's guitar, too!

Jeannette, where in Iowa did you move to? I lived in Iowa for over 20 years....we just moved about 5 months ago to south Texas...I couldn't take the winters anymore.
We live in Ames (1995-1999) and (2001-present). We've had some cold weather and some weird weather, but after living in Mississippi, my German husband says he'll never live in the South again!
I have friends and relatives in Texas. Where do you live? Where did you live in Iowa?

Jeannette, did you have the guitar?? I actually tried to locate the owner of the sweater and the cookbooks, but the post office was useless. So, I threw out the sweater and the rancid nuts, but used the cookbooks for years (still would have rather had the academic books, as they were German literature and criticism that I would not be able to obtain in Canada).
