You're right. I keep imagining a picture book with a vet (possibly an animal himself, like a large and fluffy smiling caterpillar) named Dr. Wiggers.

Well, I'm a little late to say good morning so I'll say good evening everyone! I'm glad you all found your way here to the re-christened Daily Chat. :-)

Hayes, hahaha! Break a pencil...very cute.

Kathy (readr4ever) | 1853 comments Jeannette, I hope you daughter got through the SAT without too much stress. She's probably through with them by now. You all should go have a nice lunch somewhere.

I plan on a lazy day today, reading The God of the Hive this afternoon. Of course, it always seems that other stuff seeps into the day, like laundry and such. I'll watch the Derby (Kentucky Derby for those of you that might not know this as Derby Day) later today. I'm not doing anything special for it, no Derby party or the like. It's a rainy, predicting some more storms, day, so staying in seems like a good idea. My doggie, Abbie, and a boom of thunder woke me up early this morning, but I managed to get back to sleep and sleep in until almost 10. Told you it was a lazy day. LOL!

Manybooks As, I was saying in the "favourite comfort book thread" I really have a love/hate relationship with objects. If an object can be broken, I will break it, or I will have broken it. I've stepped on cell-phones, bent and broken keys in their locks, and once, at home I tripped over the cat (who had a tendency of walking around your legs) while taking a platter of Christmas goodies to the downstairs fridge (my parents were not impressed).

My computer died! I'm popping in through my daughter's computer, but I don't like using it much so hopefully I get hooked up again soon.

I'm concerned about Wendy (Literary Feline) since I haven't found a post about her kitty.

Jeannette...how did your daughter do?

I finished Girl in Translation Girl in Translation by Jean Kwok ...loved it!! I have to add it to the group shelves.

Have a good Saturday. :)

Christine, how awful! I would feel like my life line was cut without my computer!! Hope it gets back into shape soon.

Gundula, what an awful story! I hope you didn't hurt yourself. Obviously the cat wanted to get her paws on the X-mas goodies!!

Hi Everyone! Sorry -- I posted on other threads but neglected this one. My daughter survived having to get up at 6am! She was in the test about 4-1/2 hours. She feels she did well, at least as well as she did on the practice test last Wednesday. She was pretty excited that one of the "read and analyze" passages was taken from The Moonstone, a book we both read last year! She should have the results in about 3 weeks. If she does well she won't have to take it again. She also finished her BritLit course this week. :)

My husband and I stayed in Des Moines all morning. We sat in a cafe and read our books and ate these delicious pastries! We went sofa shopping and then waited in the car and finished our books until the test was over. It was a fun day! Tonight we are going out with friends and then to a movie. Wow, it is social season again, after being holed-up for the winter.

Thanks for the well-wishes; I shared them with my daughter!

My problem is tripping and falling. I fell in a hole on the street in D.C. when I was there last week, but I wasn't hurt much. The first time I fell in D.C., about 4 years ago, I fell down steps at the Sculpture Garden and messed my knee up. Two years ago, I tripped over a baby gate in my house and broke my nose. It's not unusual for me to trip up the stairs from the TV room to the rest of the house. Yikes, I guess I need to be more careful, although I suspect that that wouldn't make a difference.

How cool, Jeannette, that The Moonstone was the literature selection and you all had just read it last year. It sounds like you and your husband had a lovely day and you still got to do more tonight.

My day of planned reading didn't happen. Grrrrrrrrrrrrr! I ended up cleaning out all of the kitchen cabinet and organizing them. I get started on something and it consumes me. My daughter, my sister-in-law, my mother-in-law, and I are having a garage sale in two weeks, and it's been an impetus to get things in shape while I find stuff to sell. of course, I have a long way to go yet. It does feel good to get organized and clean stuff out. Gee, I think I'll do this every 20 years. LOL! I am going to make myself relax tomorrow and read my wonderful book I'm reading, The God of the Hive.

Ouch, breaking your nose must have been painful. I have the tendency to trip and fall as well, but except for breaking my leg skiing down a bunny hill in Switzerland when I was about six years old (the place is not even a ski hill anymore, it has been turned a suburb with ugly modern chalets), I've never done much damage; I guess I just bounce.

LOL! Bouncing is good, Gundula. The nose did hurt. My daughter and her husband were here at the time, and he knew how to push the nose back into place. I asked him if it would hurt before he did it, and he told me that it would. He didn't lie. It still hurts from time to time. My ear, nose, and throat doctor told me that if it gets to where I have trouble breathing, he should probably operate on it, but I'm not there yet and hopefully won't be.

Ouch, Kathy, you need to develop Gundula's skill of bouncing! I am cringing just thinking about your husband setting your broken nose!

Gundula, I still don't know why cats want to be tripped over. I watch myself when I walk down the stairs with my cat -- he always cuts a diagonal across my path down the stairs!

I learned my lesson that time, and you're right about cats always criss-crossing in front of you, maybe like Hayes said, they want to get their paws on whatever you are carrying (my parents' cats only do it when you are carrying something).

message 1873: by [deleted user] (new)

The orange cat always does this to me on the stairs, regardless of whether I am carrying something or not. The black cat does not. They both have a tendency of coming up in silent mode and standing right next to me (or any of us) and not moving when we do. I feel bad stepping on their toes, it must hurt, but if they don't move and I can't see them....

Cats can be strange, but fun. And, they do what they want, when the want, at the most inconvenient time. Once, at Christmas, I was just about to read the Christmas story (on Christmas Eve, we celebrate on December 24), when the cat jumped onto my lap, onto the Bible and would not move. It would have been funny, but he had previously been outside and smelled like the horse barn which permeated both the Bible and my clothes.

Kathy (readr4ever) | 1853 comments Cats are sneaky, full of stealth. I've never been a cat person, even though I took in a stray and had him for 20 years. I did admire the heck out of their independent and superior attitude, like I don't really need you, you inferior humans.

message 1877: by Chrissie (new)

Chrissie Kathy and Gundula, yohoo, here I am. Well, picture this. I am in a very posh club restaurant in Milwaukee, me being my Mom, two brothers and my grandmother, who is the actual member of the club. I am about 12. Very very posh, proper Sunday buffet lunch. So what do I do? I start putting morsels on my plate and I am intently pondering what to choose..... Heavens ther is so much. That or that or that..... So I forget that food is already on my plate and hold it vertically, next to my stomach! Everything tumbles down my front onto the floor. Pre-tten girls can be very embarassed by such! And my family! I don't think we ever went back there! My dress was a total mess.

The continuation of the mall having doors that don't open automatically - well my Mom and I are astounded when a woman just sails by into the mall by PUSHING the doors. Like total idiots, my Mom and I just stare at each other, dumbounded. We had my son and daughter with us - 5 and 3 years old! OK, a bit of a gaffe, but everybody makes mistakes. We go in by PUSHING THE DOORS,and there we are surprised to see a stroller waiting for us! "How nice, the mall provides shoppers with strollers!" I plunk Ellen in and we stroll down the mall, my Mom and I chatting. Five minutes later a VERY distraught woman comes up to us and asks it THAT is our stroller. "Oh, no! it was back there by the entrance." Of course it was her stroller! Well, why did she leave it at the entrance?? I guess my Mom and I should have noted that there was only one stroller lined up there....

Manybooks Directions (right, left, north, south etc.) are one of my major problems. I'm quite useless reading maps and often, when I think I'm going left, I'm actually going right and vice versa. Also, I'm always turning keys the wrong way to get things locked and unlocked. That's usually not a problem, but I once set off the burglar alarm at my aunt's apartment in Germany because you had to turn the key a certain way to not trigger the alarm, and I forgot (no, I did not forget, I just screwed up). And, please don't ask me for detailed directions, I might just send you the opposite way.

Also, you should see me trying to peel white asparagus, potatoes and other vegetables. If I don't peel myself, I take huge chunks out of the vegetables or break them in two. I've given up peeling potatoes, carrots etc. before cooking (I just wash and scrub them a bit). And, since you usually only get white asparagus in Europe, I have not had a chance to embarrass myself lately. The last time, I was visiting my aunt (the same aunt with the key/alarm combo), she asked me to peel the asparagus for her, with a knife, and became very annoyed with me when I was obviously having problems. I think that's what bugs me the most, when parents etc. ask me to do things that they should know I will likely be a klutz at and then get angry and insulting when I have trouble with the task (also, I'm usually better, if you don't stare at me and leave me alone). I think people have finally gotten the message to an extent, but it's still frustrating to them when I show bad hand/eye coordination (also, my hand/eye coordination varies, sometimes I can catch a ball from across the room, stand on one leg, screw in a light bulb no problem, other times, not a chance).

Good morning! I'm still on my daughter's computer (ugh! I do not get how she gets work done at this desk!). Mine is at Best Buy either getting fixed or getting it's death certificate, we will see. I'm rooting for the death certificate because it's still on a service plan and would be replaced.

Have fun today, Jeannette. It sounds like you've had a great weekend!

All of these accident stories have me worried about walking down the stairs. The broken nose...yikes, Kathy!

I cleaned out my office yesterday. It wasn't planned, but the computer thing got me started and I just kept going. Not fun, but glad it's done, hope today to get some sun. (Hey, spontaneous poetry!)

I'm sorry I didn't check in sooner. We attended the air show yesterday and it was such a busy day. We had a lot of fun though. Anya's red cell count was up, thank goodness, so that's definitely good. Dag nammit! No death certificate. It's going to cost way more than I thought to fix it, but it would be more expensive to get a new one...so the old one is getting a make-over. This is not pleasing news. Hopefully I'll have it back tomorrow. Emma is not amused at my making fun of her desk.
