Ha! It's true that our various chat threads have lots more activity than our book discussion threads.

Lost 6-0 to one of the top sides in the veterans' [field hockey] league yesterday. Hard to take, but at least I can run the legs off most of the other players on the pitch these days. That's a small consolation.

Best wishes,

Lance & Diane,
Thanks for the welcome, guys.
Clark
Okay all you comfy readers, I need some good juju today. I'm trying, with the help of a few friends, to rescue a pregnant goat from the holding pen of a slaughterhouse. I found out about her last night and my mom has kindly offered to give her a home on her farm. She is scheduled to be killed tomorrow and I can't bear it. I'm simply frantic trying to co-ordinate this rescue because the facility is not near where I live. Please send love and pray for this sweet mama to live!
Lee, Don't need a photo. Thank you for doing this. I fervently hope your successful, and kudos to your mother!!!
Oh my goodness!I am thinking about you, and the poor goat, and your wonderful mother. Good luck and big waves of juju to all three of you. I hope that it all works out.
Thank you Lisa, Lance and Kim. Today a series of events and circumstance prevented us from getting to her. Fingers crossed for tomorrow. My friend who lives near the slaughterhouse is going first thing in the morning to negotiate for her. My mother and I are both beside ourselves with anxiety. I haven't been able to eat all day, my stomach is in knots but I have to try and calm down because we may be disappointed. I know many people may not understand but I know this beautiful mama goat values her life and that of her babes yet to be born. She deserves to live and so do all the other animals crammed in there with her. I wish I could save them all. :-(
Lee wrote: "Thank you Lisa, Lance and Kim. Today a series of events and circumstance prevented us from getting to her. Fingers crossed for tomorrow. My friend who lives near the slaughterhouse is going first..."Hope you are successful, and you really should be contacting the media.
Lee, I want to know what happens. You can feel good about how hard you're working. I sure hope it works. Awful situation. Sometimes it just gets overwhelming how much suffering there is in the world, and it's horrifying how much is avoidable, but it's not avoided. Yes, please let us know. I hope you can feel good about your efforts, with this goat and everything else you've been doing.
Lisa, I won't feel good unless we have good outcome. My efforts won't mean squat unless they make a difference. I'll let you know later.
Lee wrote: "Lisa, I won't feel good unless we have good outcome. My efforts won't mean squat unless they make a difference. I'll let you know later."Lee, In one way, you're right. The goat's fate matters. In another way, you're wrong. Whatever we do does matter. Knowing you're working on this might inspire others to do similar work, and other animals might be saved. But of course I hope your specific work to save this particular goat is successful. And my opinion of your mother right now is very positive. Please let us know. And thank you for what you're doing.
Thanks, Lisa. I just read this quote in an article, "action is the antidote to despair" ~ Joan Baez.
That pretty much sums up how I feel right now and I know I shouldn't be so attached to having a good outcome and saving this particular goat but I am. My mother and I are very alike, we're both very emotional and she has a big heart. She loves animals too. I'm very thankful that she has accepted my request.

Lee, I'm not saying that you shouldn't feel emotional or care, just saying that if your efforts don't work, they weren't worthless.
Oh Lee, hope this all works out. As Lisa says your efforts are NOT worthless no matter how it turns out. With animal rescue we can't save them all - but knowing that you did your best to try has to be ok sometimes. Remember there are many that would have nothing at all. Good thoughts!
Lee wrote: "Thank you Lisa, Lance and Kim. Today a series of events and circumstance prevented us from getting to her. Fingers crossed for tomorrow. You made me feel good, even though this is part of a sad thread.
Lance's Tattoo NewsThose of who were interested in the tattoos that I was going to allow my son, "Dangerous Dave", to inflict upon me, will be disappointed to learn that the session had to be postponed because he had a paying customer on the appointed day.
The new day for the first two is set to 11th November.
On the top of my left arm, will be the badge of my football team, Dundee United.

On the top of my right arm will be my regimental badge, the Royal Engineers.

The following week, he is going to ink the rose and thistle of Yorkshire and Scotland: my heritage. The rose will be white, and the thistle, of course, will be purple. The stems and leaves will be green.

I'll post images of the actual tattoos when they adorn my skin.
I happen to know the news about the goat is sad. So, sending loving thoughts to Lee!!! Hope all who know her do the same.

Sorry to hear, Lee. Don't give up.
Lee: nothing we can say will go any way to consoling you and your Mom and any others who fought with you. But you know that our loving thoughts are are your way. I am full of admiration for you, and I know that you will continue to fight for animals in similar plight. Keep up that good fight! You are wonderful!
Thanks everyone. Thanks to Lisa for letting you know. It was a tough day. The people at the slaughterhouse put us off until they had killed all the animals, including the pregnant mom, and then said, it was too late, the goats have already been "processed". Jesus. I'm very sorry that our rescue attempt was not successful and that the end of that mom's life and was spent in such misery. After I found out and my daughter and I had a good cry, I immersed myself in a related project, much larger that will hopefully make a difference.
My mom, who also cares very deeply about all the animals in her care, was equally upset. I will convey all your thoughts and thanks to her. It was a big leap of faith for her to get involved and I'm deeply appreciative that she was willing to give "Holly" as she was named, a home.
I appreciate all your support. It makes bearing what happened a little easier. I love my comfy buddies! xoxoxoxo

I am sitting here in my kitchen, ready for the drive to work, and weeping with you and your mom and daughter, Lee, even though I am thousands of miles away and have not even been close to Holly. I can hardly imagine how you feel. Onwards and upwards. Keep us informed about your much larger, related project. Good luck with that!
Humans are often unfathomable. I'm glad Holly is no longer suffering. I admire you Lee for continuing with your activism. You ARE making a positive difference. Condolences to your mother and daughter too!!

I know it is too late for "Holly" but I still think you should contact the media (negative publicity might cause things to get better in the future). All my love to you, Maggie and your mother.
I love you guys! It warms my heart to know you're all rooting for the animals too. I'll keep you informed of the larger project as it develops. It's exciting!
And Gundula, there will be media involved! :-)

Excellent!!
More Tattoo NewsDave tells me that it won't hurt too much. Many clients tell him that it is like a hot cat scratch. But he can't tell me the difference between a hot and a cold cat scratch!
He has loads of tattoos, so I asked him what he thought. He told me that it was no worse than having scalding water poured onto your skin!
If any of you have tattoos, let me know how you felt.
I'll let you all know when I have been inked.
Lee wrote: "there will be media involved! :-) "Lee, I want to hear all about this. ASAP please. Sounds wonderful. yes, action is the antidote to despair.
Lance Greenfield wrote: "He told me that it was no worse than having scalding water poured onto your skin!"No thanks.
What did I miss, Lance?
What tattoo are you getting?
Lisa, see message 13515
Lance Greenfield wrote: "Brave? Or crazy?!"Maybe both.
I guess it depends on how much you really want it and why.
Personally, I'd have some tee shirts made up. ;-)
Dave has been trying to get me under his needle for many years. It is at the family price of FREE, and I finally thought, "Why not!"I may regret that.
Well, Lance, if you want it, forever, go for it. It sounds as though you've thought about it, which ones you want. I don't like permanent art on my body. I'd rather change with my mood, but I know many people love tattoos.
I've never really wanted this before, but Dave is very good at what he does. He should be. The only days he went to school were when there were art classes!I am sure that they will look good. I am 56 years old now, so I will only have to live with them for a maximum of another 67 years before my expected demise!
Lance, I'm sure they'll turn out really well. I just hope it's not too painful. Maybe you should have him do first the one you want most. Then you could always stop, or take a break before getting the others.
I really love your concern for me Lisa. I assure you that, whatever it is like, I have been through much worse!
