I saw this post on my summary of posts I receive and just had to comment. A tragedy of this proportion should not go unnoticed. No morning coffee is a serious matter. I love my Bunn coffee-maker and would immediately buy another one if something happened to it. I hope you have a new machine by now, Barb. What kind did you get?

Fortunately, th..."
Good to hear you have a new coffepot and that you didn't have to go without your cup of coffee. Books and coffee, my two necessities of life.
Good morning comfy girls! So glad that I know Barb has coffee today. :)
This has been a weird week. I feel like I'm nesting (NO, not pregnant!!). Monday I decided spontaneously to paint a wall in my foyer. Went out, bought the paint and did it. Yesterday after school work was completed I was inspired to Spring clean like a crazy person. We will see what today brings.
How is everyone else?

Oh, I'm reading Kabul Beauty School: An American Woman Goes Behind the Veil for book club, and wondered if any of you had heard about this aftermath with the author. I want to google it and see what it's about, but I don't want to find spoilers for the book.
Hmmm...I feel like baking. And gardening.

Whoa, Christine, it must be the warm weather! I was actually sorting through piles of old school stuff yesterday and tossing! It is supposed to be in the 80's today, so I might go out and rake all the dead grass from the lawn. Do we need intervention or encouragement? :)
Encouragement for now...if I start weeding the neighbor's garden then I may need intervention. I need to sort out my school office too! Good idea! And I want to clean the upstairs windows.
I've decided that I'm going to paint my dining room. Yep, that would look really good.

Oh, yeah, the windows, too, so we can put the screens up. Go for it, it's still early!

I thought about raking the dead leaves and grass, but I've noticed that the deer love this stuff (especially in the Spring and in Winter, when food is scarce), so I'm leaving it for them. And, it's paying off. I saw at least ten deer yesterday and one of them was so curious, it actually followed me down my driveway when I went to pick up the mail.
How wonderful to live so close to nature -- something many of us miss. All I can see right now are rabbits, and pretty soon baby rabbits! They don't eat the dead grass; they are looking for the fresh stuff.

Rabbits are picky eaters and they can certainly do damage to a garden. Deer can be destructive as well, but I would rather have deer than have a garden, and I don't have very green thumbs anyhow.

It's wonderful, but I also have to be sure to post NO HUNTING signs everywhere (my area is big on deer hunting and if you don't put signs up, some people automatically assume they have some kind of entitlement to hunt on your property). Unfortunately, the former owner of the property also allowed hunting, and it's been a bit of a chore re-educating and re-training people. However, I think most have gotten the message now.
All I can say is how awful. But how wonderful that you have made your property an animal sanctuary!

Hi girls! I was feeling spring-like and did some balcony gardening today. Put some basil plants in the pots and bought a new climbing plant with red trumpet like flowers... no it's not a trumpet vine... it's called dipladenia sundaville... here's a piccie (and boy do I wish I had *this* garden!)

It's not fun and I don't like the fact that if a person is bound to hunt on my property, he/she will be armed, while I am unarmed. Obviously, if push came to shove, I would not try to force the issue (thank heavens, this has not happened so far), I would simply call the police. I did have to replace some downstairs windows when I first moved to the property, as they had bullet holes in them (but, I think they stemmed from the time that the former owner allowed hunting). I have noticed though that while I had a few deer and some wild turkeys when I first moved, I now have a whole horde of twenty to thirty wild turkeys and at least ten to twelve resident deer (I even saw a bobcat or lynx last year, but I was glad to be inside, they're quite big).

Isn't it? Like I said, I wish that were my house! I "borrowed" the photo off of a flower site.

How beautiful. We can't plant outside here until May!

No kidding! Not nice to come out of the house and find a person with a gun!

I've got sunny balconies (we're on the 3rd floor--or 4th depending on how you count the ground floor), so we can start earlier. Gets too hot for most things in July and August, so we have to move them around to the shadier balcony.

I love the balconies in Germany, with all of their potted flowers! I imagine Italy is like that, too?

Thanks everyone!

It is like that...I love it too.
My bougainvillea needs to be replaced, but I fear it will have to wait for next year. They don't last long in pots... not enough root space. 10 years is quite a long time actually.
When my kitchen balcony is ship shape and blooming I'll take a picture.

I also finished a baby afghan I've been knitting since November! So I shall no longer have lavender baby yarn taunting me in my sleep. LOL

How are you feeling, Susanna?
Great weather must help, sun is back out again here today, but it wont last thru the Easter weekend. *sigh*

But, we have chocolate bunnies to look forward to! :)
Good morning! I got my assignment for what to bring for Easter, and now I'm looking for a recipe. She wants a lemon cake, which I can do, but I need a good frosting. Any ideas?
Mmmmmm, lemon cake. How about just a simple lemon juice and icing sugar mix with a tiny bit of water?

That's what I would use, simple and delicious.
Oh, yes, a bundt cake thing with a lemon glaze. Sounds good. I'll see it I have a recipe like that somewhere. Or maybe a lemon pound cake...

I was thinking of that too. I think it would be pretty simple, but I don't want to be overwhelming.

Ingredients
2 1/4 cups sifted all-purpose flour
1 1/4 cups sugar
1 teaspoon salt
1/2 teaspoon baking soda
1 1/2 teaspoons grated lemon peel
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
1 cup CRISCO® Shortening
1 (8 ounce) container lemon yogurt
3 eggs
Lemon Glaze
1 lemon, juiced
1 cup Confectioners' sugar
Directions
1.Preheat oven to 325 degrees. Grease a 10-inch tube (or bundt) pan with CRISCO® Shortening. Dust lightly with flour; set aside.
2.In the bowl of an electric mixer, combine all ingredients low speed. Beat for 3 minutes at medium speed. Pour batter into prepared pan.
3.Bake 50 to 60 minutes or until toothpick inserted in center comes out clean.
4.In a small bowl, combine lemon juice and confectioners' sugar until smooth. Brush over warm cake. (The glaze will be thin and absorbed into cake.)
Thanks for taking the time to write out the recipe Joy! I'm sure it will be perfect for Christine.

Which means I've missed a ton of discussions. Thanks for the lemon cake recipe, Joy, I'll have to copy that and try it some time!
Welcome back Katri! Were you vacationing in Budapest? Or there on business? It must be a wonderful place to visit.
Thanks, Joy! I might replace the shortening with butter and see how it goes. That is exactly the kind of cake I was thinking of.
Welcome back, Katri! Did you improve your Hungarian? :)

p.s. Katri came back at the right time: yesterday it was Spring Cleaning, but today it's cake! Much better discussion today. lol
