Lisa Vegan (lisavegan) And, please, if you know any members who might not check in regularly but might want to post in the "we're thinking of you, Lee" thread, please direct them there. Thank you very much.

Will do that, Lisa. I was wondering, wether you know the hospital Lee and Maggie are in. I don't think that I should be visiting (that would probably be too much for them to handle at the moment), but as I am in the same area, I could try to mail them a get-well card and gift.

Hey, Christine! I'm glad you're having fun! When are you coming home?

We were at All-State Speech today -- Lea's last year. We had a great time and she did a super job! Three people came up after her review and asked where they could find the anime online (the one she reviewed). :)

message 6606: by Lisa (new)

Lisa Vegan (lisavegan) Christine and Jeannette, Great to hear some great news!

message 6607: by [deleted user] (new)

Thanks, Lisa! We are all tired and catching up on email. But, it was so much fun for Lea to finish her last Speech Contest with a performance at All-State.

Thanks for keeping us posted about Lee and Maggie. What a difficult time for both of them!

Morning Comfies. Woke up to snow on the ground (again!). It is Spring, isn't it?

Lisa Vegan (lisavegan) Just an update re M. & L.: Medication is working and M. won't have to have general anesthesia/the procedure. Long haul though, including a neck collar and physical therapy, but her progress looks promising. So relieved.

Oh, that is good news, but it still will be quite the ordeal. But it's good she won't have to have general anesthesia. How long will she have to stay in the hospital?

message 6612: by Lisa (new)

Lisa Vegan (lisavegan) Gundula wrote: "How long will she have to stay in the hospital?"

I don't know. I asked Lee to let us know when she knows in her next group email.

Me too. But it's causing nausea & vomiting and I wish they could/would give her something to relieve that.

Ginger tea might work. If they don't want to give Maggie anything stronger, they might want to try ginger (it really does help with nausea). There are even natural ginger "Gravol" pills available now (of course, you would have to check wether ginger might interfere with the medication, but it's worth asking).

message 6616: by Lisa (new)

Lisa Vegan (lisavegan) Gundula, Some kids find ginger too strong a taste though. I didn't like it when I was 5.

I take ginger caps every day and cook with ginger too.

And I use it for motion sickness and illnesses and it does work great, yes!

message 6617: by Lisa (new)

Lisa Vegan (lisavegan) When I used to spend entire days at amusement parks riding roller coasters, I'd bring about 100 ginger caps with me and I'd be taking them all day long! Without them, I'd have been sick; with them I could have lots of fun!

I guess it could taste kind of strong. I like ginger a lot better than other things for nausea and motion sickness (and it does not make you drowsy either). I cook with ginger as well, and I love candied ginger.

Roller coasters, yeah, I used to get sick on them as well. But worse was that I always ended up with a major headache at the end of the day.

message 6620: by Lisa (new)

Lisa Vegan (lisavegan) Me too, but I didn't when I was young. I hope they try it though. It can thin the blood so if there is any chance they'll have to do surgery they wouldn't want her taking it. You're supposed to stop with things like ginger, aspirin, etc. a week before any procedure where you might bleed. I don't think that's the case here anymore, but just in case...

I did not know ginger can thin the blood, I knew about aspirin, but not ginger. I do hope they try something though, not fun to be sick like that on top of the neck problems. Poor Maggie, I hope she feels better soon.

message 6622: by [deleted user] (new)

Ginger ale might work, too. That's what I drank after surgery when I was a kid. I didn't know ginger acted as a blood thinner. Learn something new every day.

I hope she gets out of the hospital soon -- that will be the best thing for her.

message 6623: by Lisa (last edited Mar 29, 2011 03:40PM) (new)

Lisa Vegan (lisavegan) Yes! Ginger ale was what I always had when I was sick and I did like that, Jeannette.

Gundula and Jeannette, yes, it's one reason it's great for the heart: it thins the blood a lot like aspirin (from the willow bark tree) does.

Everybody, I came back in to say: the doctors will let them know tomorrow, but it's very possible Lee's daughter AND LEE!!! will get to go home tomorrow. There will still be weeks of neck brace and then PT but she's doing much better. Hooray! I hope they get home. They'll get more rest there and Maggie will certainly get more respect. Boo hiss re hospitals.

message 6624: by [deleted user] (new)

They will both get some needed rest. No way that Lee can be getting any sleep in a hospital chair. I look forward to hearing that they are heading home! :D

message 6625: by Maude (new)

Maude | 479 comments Lisa, Do the doctors know what caused this?

message 6626: by Lisa (new)

Lisa Vegan (lisavegan) Maude wrote: "Lisa, Do the doctors know what caused this?"

Online it says it can be trauma (from anything from a car crash to from as little as a sneeze during an infection) and some cases have to do with way of growing, etc. etc. but most cases are idiopathic; they never figure it out. But, I don't know what Lee has been told, no. I know the PT is to help prevent it from happening again.

Jeannette, Lee's sleep has been very deprived and the way they wake up Maggie constantly to give her medicine, well her sleep can't be good either.

I hope they get to go home tomorrow. As long as it's medically safe, they'll be much better off at home.

message 6627: by [deleted user] (new)

It so hard to think of Maggie being in such pain that they have to keep giving her so manuy drugs. I know they are doing what they have to to make things better, but I hope she and Lee can get back home soon.

message 6628: by Maude (new)

Maude | 479 comments Thanks for the feeback, Lisa. I, too, hope they will be able to go home tomorrow or soon.

message 6629: by Chrissie (new)

Chrissie If we ALL cross our fingers and concentrate on Maggie and Lee and wish them home......maybe it will work! After this I bet Lee will not want to read books with medical issue. They are all just too scary!

message 6630: by Lisa (new)

Lisa Vegan (lisavegan) Great news, Comfies: Lee and I just had a nice long conversation. THEY ARE HOME! HOORAY! Maggie is in good spirits. They're going to get some decent food (believe me, the hospital food was literally inedible) in them, and hopefully Lee will get some much needed rest, and sleep. And, she'll be back in here with us as soon as she can and when she ca.

message 6631: by [deleted user] (new)

Great news, indeed! I am so happy they are back home! Now they can get the rest they need and some decent food! :D

Chrissie Progress, one step at a time. YAY!!!

message 6633: by Sherry (new)

Sherry I believe that peppermint is also supposed to be helpful with nausea, and that's a flavor Maggie might like better than ginger, which I agree is probably a more "mature" flavor. Even sucking on a peppermint candy would probably help some. My heart goes out to Maggie, Lee, and their family.

I've used peppermint for stomach aches before. I, also, use peppermint tea for my IBS.

message 6636: by Manybooks (new)

Manybooks I'm glad Lee and Maggie are finally home, and I hope they are finding some time for rest and relaxation. Get well soon, Maggie!!

Yeah, peppermint also works well for nausea and stomach aches. I also like fennel (anise), but that is not everyone's cup of tea (pun intended).

message 6637: by Lisa (new)

Lisa Vegan (lisavegan) Peppermint is a good idea if the nausea recurs.

message 6638: by [deleted user] (new)

My husband had to drink fennel tea as a child, whenever he was sick. Now, he hates the taste of fennel.

Manybooks Jeannette wrote: "My husband had to drink fennel tea as a child, whenever he was sick. Now, he hates the taste of fennel."

That was the one thing I liked about being sick, getting to drink fennel and/or chamomile tea. My grandparents once made me drink something called vermouth tea when I was ill (I have never tasted anything more bitter in my life, oh yuck).

message 6640: by Lisa (new)

Lisa Vegan (lisavegan) I still love ginger ale, which is what I drank when I was sick. When I was 5 I had the flu and a neighbor brought over cola syrup. My mother was not happy. She was happy that I hated it. For years I thought I hated coca cola/coke, and my mother was happy. I don't think I figured out I liked coke until I was 12 or 13 or 14. I don't drink any of it now, but will have ginger ale if I get the stomach flu, and Gatorade.

Gatorade, now that is something I did not think of, but it would be great if one had the stomach flu (and it would replace electrolytes). I read somewhere that the person who invented Coca Cola was actually trying to invent a patent stomach medicine (I don't know how true that is).

message 6642: by Lisa (new)

Lisa Vegan (lisavegan) That is what it was used for, yes, the syrup anyway.

message 6643: by Brenda (new)

Hello my dear comfy readers! I’m back! I missed you all and knew you were thinking of us while we were in hospital. I was in contact with Lisa for most of the time, she was very helpful in many ways and she told me you were all sending us love and healing thoughts.
I’m not sure how much detail I should go into here but Maggie basically dislocated the top part of her spine all on her own just while she was playing. The doctors were really great and we had good care but living in the hospital for five days was pretty awful. I’m sure many of you have experienced this so I won’t go into any gory details here.
Maggie is in pretty good shape. She has on a rigid cervical collar that prevents her from turning her head at all or looking down. That will have to stay on for two weeks and then we go back to the hospital and they will re-assess what’s next.
I just want to say that I am thankful to have so many lovely, concerned and supportive friends who sent me lots of encouraging messages. It will take a while to catch up so please bear with me.
I hope everyone here is well. I can tell you that even though I took a bunch of books to the hospital with me I only read about 2 pages!

message 6645: by [deleted user] (new)

Welcome back, Lee! I'm glad that our thoughts and messages helped to sustain you in such a difficult time. Give Maggie a "gentle" hug from me! The poor little thing will be "itching" to run and play, as soon as that collar comes off.

message 6646: by Lee, Mod Mama (new)

Thanks Jeannette, I will definitely give her that hug. She is already literally "itching" but we will try and keep her busy!

Yes, we've been working on it a little bit but it's hard and uncomfortable for her to look down for more than a few seconds. We have a giant whiteboard on the kitchen wall that I use for writing/spelling/games etc which will be useful because it's at eye level.
