I feel the same way Gundula! I don't mind doing it on Facebook or any other social network, but Goodreads is where I go to not only socialize with my friends LOL! but I can also go here to post up my opinions about the books I've read and having a chat room might take the fun out of that. But I guess we'll have to see how things turn out! By the way, I hope everything goes well with your parents' visit!

Absolutely true! ;-) And, I never bring it up/request it myself. It's just that when others do, I can't seem to restrain myself from expressing my wishes.

It's a suggestion that actually has something to do with books, with making book ratings a bit clearer for me, although I can also see the implications of making such a change, like do we then have to rerate all of our previous books. A chat or IM feature, like on Facebook, really does not have much to do with books or reading.

And thanks again, everyone, for your wishes etc. for today. I hope this meeting works out, and even if may parents and I agree to disagree, I at least hope that both they and I will come to a greater understanding about everything.

message 6554: by Lisa (new)

Lisa Vegan (lisavegan) Gundula, Exactly. You can't make someone like someone else and they might never be completely happy, but if they'll accept you and your boyfriend, and if all of you can get along well, visit & such, that would be great. Best wishes!!!

message 6556: by Sherry (new)

Sherry I totally agree with those remarks about poorly worded comments; and what irritates me possibly even more is the people who think capitalization and punctuation are also unnecessary. And "you" is "u"; "to" is "2"; "are" is "r", etc. I think it is just plain laziness, and it drives me nuts. (End of rant ;)

Very off of any topic line....if anyone has an Android phone and wants to play Scrabble with me, let me know.

message 6562: by [deleted user] (new)

That would be fun! But, I don't have an Android. :(

message 6563: by [deleted user] (new)

Hey Christine! Are you okay? You're not at the bottom of a well or anything?

I'm trying to arrange our vacation in Germany this summer, and I got sucked into the internet yesterday. Luckily I made it through the other side.....

message 6564: by [deleted user] (new)

Oh Jeannette, I do feel somewhat well-bottom-like, but I'm on dry land for now. Just a bad couple of days.

I was wondering why you were also not posting. People count on us to fill up this thread! We are slacking off!

message 6565: by [deleted user] (new)

I guess so. Saturday we went shopping and I have no idea what we did Sunday. I think that's the day I got sucked into the internet. We did watch Galaxy Quest this weekend, which is always good for some laughs.

I hope your days are improving. It's been raining here, and snow is in the forecast for Friday! Have you got any plans from your birthday??

message 6566: by [deleted user] (new)

I am flying (ugh!) on my birthday. I hate flying. Hate. It. Taking the kids to Disney for their break. I do love Mickey Mouse so it's worth the flying...I think.

message 6567: by [deleted user] (new)

You could drive for two days! :p Have fun at Disney but stay out of the Tiki Room! (Hey, did you do this last year, too?)

message 6568: by [deleted user] (new)

Yes, we tend to go once a year because we have that vacation club thing and use points. I remember the Tiki Room thing! Hahaha!!

message 6569: by [deleted user] (new)

Yeah, it was this intense feeling of deja vu. What a place that was.

message 6570: by [deleted user] (last edited Mar 22, 2011 11:58AM) (new)

I had forgotten the conversation until you said that, although I probably would have remembered as soon as I walked by the Tiki Room. I soooooo want to get you a Tiki Room t-shirt if they have them.

message 6571: by [deleted user] (new)

arf arf arf! What's that Lassie, Christine's in the well? arf arf arf! Again?? ;P

message 6572: by [deleted user] (last edited Mar 24, 2011 04:59AM) (new)

Haha! Christine had a migraine yesterday. The whole day is a blur. But Lassie's barking has gotten Dixie started and now she is barking too.

I have a story to tell, but I am tryng to decide if it's a good idea since this is a public group. I may just have to send out a zillion private emails...one to each group member here.

message 6573: by [deleted user] (new)

Well, at least send one to me. My life is pretty dull these days.... It's still cold, snow in the forecast, and I can't stand another day of it. *bleh*

Bleh is right. We had no snow left on the weekend, and now there is at least 20 cm on the ground (at least it's sunny today). Well, that was my break for the day, I need to go back and finish reading Toxic Parents: Overcoming Their Hurtful Legacy and Reclaiming Your Life which I am supposed to finish reading for tomorrow's therapy session, certainly not easy reading and I'm taking tonnes of notes, sigh.

message 6575: by [deleted user] (new)

Tell you therapist you would like a more cheerful book for this week's reading assignment! ;)

message 6576: by [deleted user] (new)

After I posted this morning I took Emma to school and ended up in a car accident...again. Emma was already at school. No injuries, just a pain in the butt. I'm not having a good start to my day.

It is, although reading some of the case studies is heartbreaking, and it is tough to slog through, but the book is good and very readable.

message 6582: by Brenda (new)

Brenda | 286 comments Christine happy to hear that neither you or Emma were injured! I hope your day gets better. Gundula hope your hand doesn't get sore from all the notetaking. Glad the book is at least readable and seems to have some valuable information.

message 6583: by Kathy (new)

Kathy (readr4ever) | 1853 comments If anyone has wondered where I went, I haven't had Internet at home for a week. Got it fixed today. Yay! I'm not going to try and catch up on all I missed. I'll just jump in here. I will have oldest granddaughter for a few days and then will be gone for a couple of days, but I hope to check in at least once a day. From the last post, I just want to say that I, too, am glad you and Emma are okay, Christine. I went to see my son today, just wanted to lay my eyes on him. He was the victim of a hit and run near his college yesterday. He's fine, but a car hit him while he was in a crosswalk. It was a hit and run, and the police told my husband today that they couldn't do anything unless my son came to the station and filled out a report. He called them when he was hit and they took a report then. I don't understand how they wouldn't be more interested in finding someone who hit a pedestrian and drove out. A city bus driver saw it happen. Go figure.

message 6584: by Lisa (new)

Lisa Vegan (lisavegan) Kathy, Glad to see you. Oh, wow, that is scary. When you first said hit & run I assumed he was in a (protective) car too. I'm glad he's fine. The problem with hit & runs is that unless someone saw a license plate # or knows the offender, it's so hard to catch them. When in a car, I've been the victim of one/not hurt, and there's not much they can do. Since there was at least one witness though, and they could search for more. you'd think the could do hypnosis or use other techniques to try to find the person who did this. I can't imagine who would hit a pedestrian and drive on without calling 911 or at least checking to see if they were okay. Glad you're back online and glad your son is okay.

message 6585: by [deleted user] (new)

Kathy, that's terrible! I am so glad that he's okay, but what a traumatic experience. For you too I am sure. The police response makes no sense to me. Let us know what happens if any more comes of it.

I'm off this morning to take Dixie to grandma's house. I'm glad that we don't have to board her, but I'm still sad to drop her off. However, grandma will spoil her.

message 6586: by Manybooks (new)

Manybooks Kathy, I too am glad that your son wasn't hurt, how scary this must be for you and for him. I do hope they find the culprit.

I'm not particularly talkative today, sorry. I have another therapy session, and everything feels really screwed up. My boyfriend is really upset at all of the pressure my parents are putting on both him and me and he is actually talking about breaking up. I do understand this and he does have a point, but that does not help me much. Life is pretty crappy right now and I hate everything, especially myself. I hope you all have a better weekend than I will likely have. That's all for now, I got some more "reading" to do before therapy.

Lovely flakes of snow are falling outside my window. It would be beautiful if it were December. "I'm dreaming of a green Easter..."

Gundula -- take a deep breath, and concentrate on you! It's time to shut everyone else out and do what it takes for you to finally get the happiness you deserve. I know it's easy for me to type this, easier than what you are facing, but you can come through this whole and happy! Don't give in to despair! You are a loving beautiful person -- remember that!

message 6588: by [deleted user] (new)

Kathy -- college campuses are dangerous places! Kids are always jay-walking (not what your son was doing) and getting hit here at ISU. The kids that do use the cross walks are in constant danger of being mowed down. I am so sorry someone hit your son, and couldn't bother to stop to see if he was okay. If he has a plate number, he should make a report. Otherwise, I hope he never encounters that driver again.

Happy trails Christine AND Happy Birthday a day early! I'll miss you around here, Comfy Buddy! When will you be home?

We are going to Speech All-State over the weekend, so I'll be offline Sunday and Monday.

REMEMBER: Stay away from the Tiki Room! Just say "No!" in a firm voice. Have fun with those lovely children! No driving for a while, okay?

Thanks I need to remember that, and get in touch with what I want (I don't even know half the time, I don't think I've ever really known or been allowed to express it, if it was anything "strange").

I need to take a break, but I hope everyone has a good weekend. Happy Birthday Christine (early, but hey), and I hope you have a fun trip. And good luck to your daughter for speech-day, Jeannette, this is so cool. And, Kathy, I hope you have a good weekend and that your son is not too shaken up by this (I hope they find the driver, getting hit in a crosswalk, yikes).

message 6591: by Sherry (new)

Sherry Wow! What a lot of traumatic happenings. Christine, on Valentine's day, I was in an accident, and I had both my grandchildren with me. I m so thankful that no one had so much as a bruise; however, I am still waiting to get my car back, and driving a rental.

And Kathy, there have been several hit-and-run accidents in this area in the last few months, and in every case the police have been able to track down the offender by using eye-witness testimony, damaged car parts that fell off, etc. I think the police can track down hit-and-runs if they are willing to put the effort into it. Maybe they just need some (rather public?) urging?

Gundula, being rather new here, I don't know you or your situation very well, but I will remember you in my prayers. I hope it doesn't come to a point where you have to choose between your boyfriend and your parents. It sounds as though they are putting you in a position where it is impossible to please both. Why would they do that to someone they love? Maybe you should ask them.

Enjoy the weekend, everyone. It's very cold here, so I think I'll stay home and read!

message 6592: by Kathy (new)

Kathy (readr4ever) | 1853 comments Thanks all for the well wishes and concern for my son. It did shake him up, but he was lucky he didn't get seriously hurt.

Gundula, I feel so bad for you with what you're going through right now. What a horrible position you're in. I hope that your are able to concentrate on just yourself and do what makes you happy, not others. Be especially good to yourself this weekend and do things that focus on caring for yourself. Please let us know how you are doing.

Lisa Vegan (lisavegan) Hi, All Comfies,

I just wanted to let you know, via Lee, that she's been MIA because she's been with her daughter, who's been hospitalized for the last two days, with a neck issue. A neurosurgeon is going to fix it (hopefully 100% successfully!) tomorrow and Lee thinks they'll remain in the hospital tomorrow night too, and won't come home until at least Monday. And once she's home, she's probably going to have to more intensively spend time with a five year old, normally very active, who might have some restrictions until she's healed. A big challenge! So, Lee hasn't looked at the computer for two days and even when she's back home, will likely have less time than usual for us for awhile.

I'm fervently hoping that all goes well and though I miss Lee, I hope she takes all the time she needs with her daughter and also getting some rest for herself when she can.

She'll be back when she can be and participate when she can.

Just wanted to let you all know since our fearless leader is missed when absent!

Hi,
I am checking in from Disney. I am concerned about Lee, hugs! Jeannette, I passed the Tiki Room today. Miss you guys.

message 6597: by Lisa (new)

Lisa Vegan (lisavegan) Lee's daughter Maggie was supposed to have her general anesthesia procedure today, but they've decided to be more conservative and do some less intensive treatment to see if that helps. If it doesn't help by tomorrow night, she'll have the senior neurosurgeon do the procedure with general anesthesia on Wednesday. Either way, it looks as though Maggie, and Lee, and Lee's husband when he's not at work, will remain in the hospital all this week.

If you haven't already, and feel so inclined, please post in this thread:

http://www.goodreads.com/topic/show/5...

Thank you.

I will.

Me too!!!

It's going to be a long haul. Weeks even after they get out of the hospital.

So, I'm letting Lee make the overtures. This is scary, exhausting, heartbreaking, etc. for Lee, and very difficult for M. When Lee can be here I'll be delighted. But, she's drained and strained. I'll get group updates but I think it's all she can do to take care of herself and M. and doubt she has much energy or interest in much else right now.

Poor kid and poor mama! I am hopeful that in the long run all will be okay, but this is so grueling and horrible.
