Sorry I didn't check with you sooner, Laura! I still have to email my friend in Australia. I haven't heard any reports from that part of the world.

They were really lucky! When you look at the footage from Japan; how horrible it must have been. Thoughts and prayers to all of you!

As I saw in the news a few minutes ago, people close to the earthquake region are only able to communicate through the internet, most of telephones don't work at all.

message 6455: by Lisa (new)

Lisa Vegan (lisavegan) The videos from Japan are horrific. So scary and sad.

I think tsunamis are only dangerous when the earthquake is close. Otherwise, we gets hours of notice.

San Francisco had warnings (thanks for your message Laura, and yes, I do know you're far enough away, despite my poorly worded reply to you) but we always have warnings and nothing comes of it. I have avoided being right at the coast today, just as a precaution. An hour and a half to the south some boats/piers were damaged, but that's it around here. Hawaii got it bad enough that in the old days, before warnings, people could have been killed on beaches.

Manybooks I'm glad everyone seems to be alright. Scary situation, though. I have one GR friend from Japan, but I don't know where she lives. I will try to contact her asap. Just cannot believe the power of that earthquale, it blows your mind and makes you realise that against nature, we are basically still quite helpless.

The news coverage has made me speechless. How heartbreaking. Jeannette, where are the exchange students that you had? Are they safe?

Christine wrote: "The news coverage has made me speechless. How heartbreaking. Jeannette, where are the exchange students that you had? Are they safe?"

I haven't heard, but they are inland from Tokyo. It appears that most of the severe waves were in the Northeast. Yes, it is heartbreaking. I was just getting to know a woman on my manga group -- she is living in Sendai. I'm not surprised that we haven't heard from her, owing to the chaos, but I hope we do soon. How horrible for those poor people.

Have a fun & safe weekend everybody! We're off to Omaha for Speech Contest! :D

p.s. I had this vegan Mexican chocolate cake last night that was to die for! My family stopped at the store to bring it home to their starving mom!

Good luck for this weekend!! That vegan chocolate cake sounds decadently delicious. I wish I had a store in Dundas that sold vegan chocolate cake, sigh.

I know. :-) Be careful. I really might fly there one day for one of your delicious meals. Of course, I'd be happy to take the 3 of you out to dinner to return the favor because I would definitely be hitting the Toronto veggie restaurants!

Sounds lovely. I'm trying out a new vegan casserole this evening, if it's good and if I actually remember all of the ingredients I put in it, I will post it. It's got kale, potatoes, leeks and almond milk (mixed with some mustard and spices); the oven smells good, so I hope it ends up tasting good.

So, do I. I really like kale but most of the German kale recipes contain huge amounts of fat and meat. I got this from a German vegan web site, although I made it a bit differently, as I would rather eat my potatoes unmashed.

Kathy (readr4ever) | 1853 comments Such a tragedy in Japan! I hope your GR friend in Sendai is okay, Jeannette. As soon as you hear anything, please let us know. I'll be keeping her and so many others in my prayers.

Lisa Vegan (lisavegan) Thanks, Lee re message #6572. (Wow!)

Yummy, Gundula, except I'm not a mustard fan so I'd use other seasonings, but that sounds really delicious. Hope it is! Healthy too!

It was pretty good and you hardly could taste the mustard.

Glad you liked it but I can always taste ingredients I don't like: mustard, vinegar, etc. I have to try a similar casserole soon.

message 6478: by Maude (new)

Maude | 479 comments I am rather late to hear about the tsunami since I didn't have TV or the radio on until today. Did you know also that China had a huge earthquake on the 10th! There were a lot of pictures on the internet of both countries and the horrible devastation. Lisa, I also read where two people were swept away - I think in Crescent City which is flat as a pancake and another person further up the coast, both due to the fact that these people do NOT understand the force of tsunami's! What emotional trauma to all who are affected. Tragic.

message 6479: by Lisa (new)

Lisa Vegan (lisavegan) Maude, Yes, people were killed in Crescent City, a place easily affected by tsunamis, but it was because they went right to the coast to look and take photos. Maybe only 1 person. 4 were rescued in the water.

Japan, on the other hand, people had no chance. So sad. We had many hours of notice. They closed the beaches and roads, etc. etc. and people went anyway. In San Francisco there were people standing right on the sand to watch. Dumb! I knew it would probably come to nothing but why take a chance. Besides the video on tv, you could see the tsunami waters receding and coming up (only a very few feet) better than if on site.

message 6480: by Lisa (new)

Lisa Vegan (lisavegan) Maude wrote: "I think in Crescent City which is flat as a pancake"

The only damage there and at Santa Cruz was to areas out in the water: boats and piers. Nothing that came inland.

message 6481: by Maude (new)

Maude | 479 comments Lisa, I have since been watching some of the results from Japan. Absolutly devastating - the people, the destruction, the lack of supplies, etc., truly one of the worst quakes ever - all those people - just heart-breaking.

Very heartbreaking!! And to think, Japan is actually one of the countries most equipped to deal with an earthquake, but an earthquake that is 8.9 on the Richter scale defies description and even the best preparations.

Lisa, I cannot believe people actually went to "watch" the tsunami waves, how silly, how dangerous, not only for them, but for the Coast Guard who then needs to rescue them and face the waves as well.

message 6483: by Lisa (last edited Mar 12, 2011 07:55PM) (new)

Lisa Vegan (lisavegan) Maude, Gundula, and All, I am in distress just from watching. So horrible. It is heartbreaking, yes. And, yes, Gundula, every time we get a tsunami warning in San Francisco, for decades, people go out to watch. Sometimes to right on the beach. I hate stereotypes and bad things said about San Francisco, but maybe we are a city of crazies.
;-(

message 6484: by Kathy (new)

Kathy (readr4ever) | 1853 comments Good point, Gundula, about the peril that people who don't respect these killer events put rescuers in. I guess people, especially young ones, feel invincible. Sadly they aren't. Lisa, you better not go watch for tsunamis with those crazies.

The city of Sendai that was hit the hardest in Japan is the sister city of Evansville, IN, half hour from me. Here is a bit of uplifting news that I came across about a rescue in Japan. http://www.guardian.co.uk/world/2011/...

message 6485: by Lisa (new)

Lisa Vegan (lisavegan) Kathy, I have a friend in Bloomington, Indiana whose sister lived for a few years in Evansville, though she's now moved to an area north of Chicago. You've made me want to go look up a list of which cities are sister cities with one another!

Don't feel too bad about SF, Lisa. I heard there were surfers out in Hawaii for the waves. And, there are always people out hurricane watching along our eastern coast.

message 6487: by [deleted user] (new)

And what about those people who chase tornadoes?? That always just boggles my mind. I have not looked at the news yet this morning (and I did not even realise, it is Daylight Savings already, wow), so I guess I better, even though the news has a tendency to depress me a bit, especially lately.

message 6489: by Lisa (new)

Lisa Vegan (lisavegan) Good points, Jeannette and Gundula! True. People are peculiar. Most people are not daredevils to that extent though.

Oh my. 5:30 in the morning comes a lot earlier once we've changed our clocks back (I guess that's the point, haha). Christine sleepy!

Dixie has a 7:00 appointment to finally get groomed. Thank goodness! She no longer looks like a dog, but more like a walking mop. Don't tell her though, she has no intention of getting a haircut. (picture on the her blog for those interested)

message 6491: by [deleted user] (new)

I am glad she's getting a cut, even if she isn't. Has she been walking in to things with her current bangs? They do look nice and silky, but dangerous! ;)

message 6492: by [deleted user] (new)

It's been funny because when I talk to her she keeps flipping her head around to see me. She hasn't been walking into things, but I can tell that she can't see. Anyway, she's there now getting a new do.

Here's why I hate ordering books from Borders: I placed the order on 3/5 and have an estimated arrival date of 3/17. My package was in Wisconsin on 3/11, and today it is in Kansas City. Iowa, where I live, lies between Wisconsin and KC. The truck probably went through Des Moines. Now, it will head back the way it just went, to finally get here in 12 days. *geez*
