I was wondering at first as well, but, yay, congratulations!!!

Happy birthday to Dixie. Is she in our birthday list thread? ;-) I hope that extra treats are forthcoming!

Good afternoon to all you comfies! What's everyone up to today? It's a sunshiny wintery day where I am.

And, good morning. So much fun to converse with people from all over the world. I'm enjoying our sunny, spring weather while it lasts. Major rain expected (again) by Sunday-Monday and into next week.

Oh is it springy in San Francisco? How lovely. When we have slightly warmer days my daugher sometimes asks me if it's an "Italian Summer". I once tried to explain what an Indian summer was and ever since she has been saying that. Enjoy your weather while it lasts Lisa.

message 6157: by Lisa (new)

Lisa Vegan (lisavegan) I like Italian summer! It sounds so cosmopolitan.

Brenda | 286 comments Good morning to everyone. We are having some light dusting of snow but it is not sticking yet. I got sidelined with doing some professional reading, at least I got to pick the topics to read I wanted. Hope everyone has a wonderful day.

Hello comfies! I just got a new hot water heater installed. Well, not very exciting, I suppose. We're still at +1 F, but it should be in the 30s by the weekend. Time for snow melt.

Hi Brenda and Jeannette!

Professional reading is better than no reading at all!

Jeannette, a new hot water heater sounds great, especially if you had an old one that didn't work so well.

message 6161: by [deleted user] (new)

The old one started making some really loud noises! It was ten years old, so it was past its prime.

Manybooks Jeannette wrote: "The old one started making some really loud noises! It was ten years old, so it was past its prime."

Just what you need, an aging hot water heater that belches ... (hope the new one purrs like a kitten).

message 6163: by [deleted user] (new)

It was popping, loudly! The plumber said it should have disintegrated soon, from the inside out.

Now, that would have been messy, yikes.

That's exactly what my husband said today.

Lisa Vegan (lisavegan) Hi, I am banging my head against a wall (figuratively) because I'm looking for a gift for someone and I don't know what to get. Been trying to find something for years, actually. I was looking at bookplates and came across this site, which lets users download bookplates for free: http://www.myhomelibrary.org/

Not what I'm looking for for this person or even myself, but I thought it was cool.

I'll go back to banging my head now.

I used to be so spot on about getting the right gifts for everyone I knew, but now, not so much, unfortunately.

My ideas have been drying up as well. What about a book signed by the author (if the person for whom you need a gift is an avid reader)?

Thanks, Gundula. They are an avid reader. But, they work in a bookstore and can get new/easy to find used books at 50% off, and it's a store with many author events. A book would only work if it's rare, and I can't remember what they'd want, or be sure that it's in good enough condition. I'm going nuts! ;-) They're long distance too, so it's not as though I can take them out somewhere. If I can remember books they've said they want to find, I might try to get one of those if it says it's in good condition.

Brenda, Great idea!!! EXCEPT she has told me she's extremely particular about her treats. :-( Ack!!! But, thank you for the idea, and any and all ideas. I do appreciate any ideas.

message 6171: by Brenda (new)

Brenda | 286 comments Ok three more that I got from the Internet, bookmarks, a personal embosser or a book tote. Good luck, I have hard to buy for people as well.

message 6172: by Manybooks (new)

Manybooks Maybe find out her favourite vintage children's book and try to find a copy in good shape. I once quite by accident obtained a vintage copy of a German children's classic that was actually signed by the author herself (was I excited, especially since the book had been an absolute bargain).

message 6173: by [deleted user] (new)

flowers? (but wait a week!) Some type of original art print? Where does your friend live?

Or, make a donation to a charity, like Farm Sanctuary (adopt an animal).

message 6174: by Lisa (new)

Lisa Vegan (lisavegan) Brenda, Gundula, Jeannette, Thank you. I'm definitely going to go with some of your suggestions, at least look. I now have one thing (thanks to a certain Goodreads friend! Muchas gracias!!!) but I'd like to get more, and these are great ideas. Good ideas in general for others too. Thanks so much. Book recommendations and a gift suggestion service! The members in the group are so wonderful!!! Thanks, guys!

You know, maybe we should start a thread on gift suggestions, it's sometimes really difficult to figure out appropriate gifts for people and having some ideas to peruse could be a wonderful resource.

Great idea. Feel free to start it, Gundula. In the Chit Chat thread would be a good place!, the general chit chat thread, vs. the one with food or movies & tv.

Good morning comfies,
I'm cranky. I'll admit it. It's -14 degrees this morning, and everything that could be annoying is indeed being annoying. I'm going to take some time for tea and reading today at some point and try to shake this mood off. Until then I think I'll practice my growly crabby face...grrrrr.

I hope that you are all having a better start.
Signed-grumpy old lady

message 6179: by [deleted user] (new)

I'm happy! It's only -8 here in Ames. :P

It's supposed to be in the 30s all weekend -- what a weird winter!

Cheer up, grumpy!

message 6180: by [deleted user] (new)

Manybooks Christine,

This story might cheer you up (well, I hope it makes you laugh). My boyfriend caught a mouse in his bedroom a few days ago, and he did not want to abandon it outside because it's been rather cold. So, he made a little nest for it in a plastic storage bin and he's been feeding it, looks like he's got a pet mouse now.

Please start smiling, Dixie is probably worried if you growl too much.

message 6185: by [deleted user] (new)

How sweet! We have mice in our compost bin every winter.

I'm glad, and make yourself some tea and some treats (that's what I'm going to do). Dr. Gundi says to drink tea, read and smile :-)

Good morning, comfies! It's finally Friday! My hubby is taking me to the movies tonight to see The King's Speech. So happy that this movie got so many Oscar noms that it is actually being shown here.

Hope you are feeling better today, Christine. Enjoy the warm up this weekend everyone! Back to the 30s for us. :)

message 6191: by [deleted user] (new)

Kathy (readr4ever) | 1853 comments I haven't been keeping up very well this week. I was sick with stomach virus/flu and am still nursing a tender tummy. I'm especially sorry that I missed Dixie's birthday. Happy Birthday darling doggie!

I don't seem to be getting thread updates in my email. Is it because I'm not posting daily or often enough? Anyone know? Oh, well, I will check in anyway. I hope everyone has a great weekend.

message 6195: by [deleted user] (new)

Sorry to hear you were sick, Kathy. The movie was outstanding!

Check your group preference settings to make sure you are asking for email updates. Email updates seem to be an ongoing problem on GR, but I have been getting mine regularly.

Lisa Vegan (lisavegan) Kathy wrote: "I don't seem to be getting thread updates in my email. Is it because I'm not posting daily or often enough? Anyone know? Oh, well, I will check in anyway. I hope everyone has a great weekend. "

Kathy,

Do you want to get all updates for all threads in all your groups? If so, go up to your account and make sure the correct notifications boxes are checked. If they are and you're not getting emails, post over in the bugs folder in the Goodreads Feedback group. Some members have complained of problems. Also, sometimes the emails come, but they're backed up and they come VERY late.

Or, are you just following certain threads? If so make sure for each thread in which you have interest, that you've clicked on the Email me when people comment* link that's at the bottom of every thread.

Does this help?

If not, post again or feel free to pm me, although you might be better off posting in the Goodreads Feedback group and getting a bunch of brains working on it, most importantly Goodreads' staff members.

Tonight is totally chocolate dinner for Valentine's Day! I did some baking last night and I really want to sit and read today.

Have a fun day everyone -- I hope it's warmer where you are! :)
