It went well -- finally got the free t-shirt! lol

The girl is excited about starting in August! Looks like I'm heading into retirement. Pass the muscle relaxers!

Seriously, take care of your back. Back pain is the pits.

I hope your back feels better soon, Christine, ouch. You need to relax for a few days (maybe a little less babysitting, a hot bath, relaxing music, and a good book). Don't take too many of those muscle relaxants, I was on them once, and they made me really loopy (or more loopy than I am usually).

Jeannette, I hope your campus visit went well, it's really nice that nowadays, there are campus visits etc. before students start college or university, I just went cold Turkey, flying out to New Brunswick from Calgary to start university in a town and province I had never been to before; it went well, but it was a bit scary and daunting as well.

It has made her excited about starting the Fall, I believe. She sat in on a German conversation class, and a technical editing class. She liked the professors in both classes. And, she won't be so nervous about entering a room where she doesn't know anyone.

You were pretty brave to go so far from home like that!

Well, the university looked good, it was a small university in a small town, and it was nice to be away from my family for a while (I love them, but they did and still do drive me crazy at times). And, I really enjoyed my time there.

message 6055: by [deleted user] (new)

I'm glad that it turned out to be such a good experience for you. :)

message 6056: by [deleted user] (new)

Good morning! The past two days have been kind of suckish. I have been on these muscle relaxers that put me to sleep so I haven't been checking in because I've been asleep or away from home or asleep again. I can finally move the right side of my body, yipee! So half of me looks like a broken old lady and the other half looks like my youthful self, haha. What has everyone been up to??

message 6057: by Lisa (new)

Lisa Vegan (lisavegan) Christine, I've occasionally used muscle relaxants for my old back injury; they are amazing, but they do conk you out. I have to work or work on things all weekend. I'm sure I'll procrastinate and get some picture books in and maybe even read a bit of my current book. Hope you're 100% soon.

message 6058: by [deleted user] (new)

I am working on my Japanese mid-terms. There are 3 writing assignments, and then I have to record myself reading one of them.

No football this weekend, so we get to watch some movies!!

Get better soon, Christine! Do you stretches and exercises, too.

I hate listening to myself on tape. When I listen to myself speaking English on tape, I can actually tell I still have a bit of a German accent. I wonder if I were to listen to myself speaking German on tape now, would I notice a bit of a Canadian accent?

message 6062: by [deleted user] (new)

Probably! ;) I will never have a German accent.

message 6063: by Manybooks (last edited Jan 29, 2011 02:36PM) (new)

Manybooks Jeannette wrote: "Probably! ;) I will never have a German accent."

Maybe I will not be able to speak either language correctly in the long run. At my undergrad university, there was a biology professor who was originally from Germany, and all of my friends who were taking first year biology kept complaining how they could not understand him due to his heavy German accent. Well, I had met this individual at a German Club get-together, and I told my friends that you really could not understand him when he spoke German either. This professor spoke German badly because he had not spoken German for a long time, and I think he also had some dialect issues, but when he spoke English, he really sounded as though he had just arrived from Germany, my friends were right, he was very difficult to understand (but in both languages).

Hi comfies! We are preparing for the storm of the century over here. Everybody is freaking out, and I just bet that we'll only get an inch of snow instead of the predicted 2 feet. We'll see. I hope that everyone is staying warm.

I think all of Central and Eastern North America is preparing for this storm. Well, it's started to snow already in Hamilton, and they are predicting 20 cm of snow (maybe more) and blowing snow. If it stays as cold as it is now, brrrr. I was going to go to the library tomorrow, but I think I'll wait until Thursday. The Canadian Weather Network is calling this the Groundhog Day Storm of 2011.

message 6067: by [deleted user] (new)

I'm with Christine -- we'll wait and see. Of course, Iowa has been lucky and the East Coast has not. Still, I ran errands today, even though enough snow had come down to make the roads slippery.

I spent 2-1/2 hours at the vet's office. I spend more money and time on the dog than I do on myself. He saw the regular doctor, the cardiologist and the neurologist. Then I took him along on errands. He slept the rest of the afternoon. lol

message 6068: by [deleted user] (new)

Keep warm everyone, and stay in if you can! :)

Quite a bit better, thank you for asking. I really took it easy on Sunday and I think it paid off.

I'm glad your back is better. And, no matter how much snow falls, don't you dare try to shovel any of it, get someone else to do that.

message 6072: by [deleted user] (new)

That sounds funny, haha! Yes, I'm off the stuff. :)

And Gundula, I won't do any snow removal...girl scout promise.

Good, that would not be appreciated by your poor back. Well, it seems cold and windy this morning, with a few flurries. I think most of the mega-snowfall is not supposed to start until this afternoon or evening, but I still changed my driving lesson to Friday (I don't want to be caught in any whiteout conditions).

message 6074: by [deleted user] (new)

Good to hear you haven't given up on the driving lessons, Gundula!

We got about 3 inches, but it is supposed to start up again at lunch, with 40mph winds this evening. Driving in whiteout conditions is no fun.

Especially when I'm supposed to be practicing parallel parking :-)

message 6076: by [deleted user] (new)

That could be tricky, indeed! ;)

message 6077: by Brenda (new)

Brenda | 286 comments I am not fond of parallel parking as a whole but under whiteout conditions I would be doomed!

message 6078: by [deleted user] (new)

Under whiteout conditions I prefer to park my car in the garage and stay home! Iowa is one big, flat state, and a windy one, too, so we see whiteout conditions fairly regularly. Empty farm fields for miles around -- it's terrible.

Like Saskatchewan, at least in Alberta, you have the Rockies, but Southern Alberta is very similar in the winter to Iowa, Saskatchewan etc. Actually, that is the one thing I do miss about being in Ontario, the view of the Rockies.

I just have to pass the stupid driving test. I usually do the parallel parking fine during my lessons, but then screw up on the road test.

message 6080: by [deleted user] (new)

Parallel parking is the hard bit! We're pulling for you to pass this time! :D

Manybooks Jeannette wrote: "Parallel parking is the hard bit! We're pulling for you to pass this time! :D"

I hope so, but I've decided to wait a bit and get some practicing done before I try it again. Also, now that there is snow, it might actually be easier, they sometimes don't ask you to parallel park if there are many snow drifts etc.

Kathy (readr4ever) | 1853 comments Hey comfies, sorry I've been away, just busy life stuff. Thanks for asking about my whereabouts, Christine. I sure hope your back is better. I will try to catch up in the next couple of days. Oh, and I do need to visit that football chat.

Jeannette, I just saw a news clip from your actual town. They were showing some crash due to ice. I had to get close to the tv and make sure that it wasn't my buddy Jeannette. Whew!

My problem is that I cannot seem to do it under pressure, like when there is an examiner next to me, lol.

And, we are officially in blizzard mode as well.

Ha! Ames hasn't had any ice, just snow and *wind*! But that snow was already slippery yesterday. Rest assured (and thanks for checking) that I and mine are inside!

My hubby even came home early.

Now, I gotta go check the news!

Not a lot of snow yet, but the wind is howling, and there are eight deer outside of my door. I feel sorry for them, but I don't think they would make very amiable house guests.

message 6091: by [deleted user] (new)

I guess the shelter of your house will have to do. It would be a bit crowded.

Christine: There does appear to have been two sizeable pileups on I-80, east of Des Moines, involving semis. Those big trucks scare the jujubees out of me in high wind! Add ice and it's a disaster waiting to happen.

And they probably would not be housebroken either.

Trucks and wind and snow, not a good mix.

message 6093: by [deleted user] (new)

deer inside = broken house! (sorry, I couldn't resist the word play.)

message 6094: by [deleted user] (new)

After Gundula mentioned deer (and endured my pun), I had to post pictures of my baby deer. We went through a little wilderness area in a state park back in May 2005. This little fawn came up to me on the path and attached itself to me. It walked beside me, and my daughter, down the path. If I got too far ahead it would bleat, and then it would come to me if I coaxed it. I even led it off the path into some tall grass. My husband got the ranger and she promised to take it over to the neighboring zoo, where it would be fed. She assumed its mother had been hit by a car.

It was the sweetest thing, to have this helpless creature appeal to me for help.

The photos are on my profile. :)

Holy Cow! I was watching these people trapped on Lake Shore Drive last night on the news (that's in downtown Chicago for those who don't know), they had been sitting still for over two hours at that point. I turned on the news this morning and the cars are still there. People eventually had to evacuate their cars.

You have to feel sorry for these reporters that they stick outside to show us what snow looks like. This guy has ice on his eyebrows. Yikes!

message 6098: by [deleted user] (new)

It's awful. I hope people stay home until the roads are safe. We were lucky to be on the north edge of the front, and were spared the bulk of it.

I wonder where the accident was? Sorry if they gave you a scare Christine! Keep safe and warm everyone.

Here's a present the wind left us overnight:

message 6100: by Manybooks (new)

Manybooks I had a bit of trouble opening my front door this morning, there was quite a bit of snow in front of it (but, I've actually seen worse). It sure sounded like howling ghosts outside last night, though.
