I know, it was really quick. I flagged it and they had it removed about five minutes later. It was basically an author promoting a book giveaway of his own book. From what I remember, I think it was an author who had previously tried to promote his books in this group under a different user name (I recognised the link he provided from previous threads). I think we might have to keep an eye open here; he might try again.

Ha, that's funny Jeannette and Christine! It's odd since I never dream about actual people that make any sense but I am a HUGE fan of Jon Hamm!! I have pictures of him on my blog...

Joy | 314 comments Not that having Jon Hamm in my den makes any actual sense though - ;) Funny how the mind works, even in dreams!

That's why I knew you should grab him in your dream! I know you are a fangirl! :D

Yes, a "fangirl" is a good way to describe it! I don't remember having such a crush on an actor in ages! He was great in the movie "The Town" too. I had to see it on the big screen, of course..;)

Having a blog is kind of like putting posters on the wall when you're 14. (something we don't outgrow) lol

I'll have to check out "The Town". I don't want any TV series.

It's kinda nice to be 14 again!

Ben Affleck did a good job directing, co-writing and acting in The Town.

I think People don't give Ben Affleck enough credit. Granted, he has been in some not so stellar movies, but he has also been really good in some of his roles. You know, for me, one of his best roles was (and, I know not many people agree with me here) as Ned Alleyn (the Elizabethan actor) in "Shakespeare in Love" (he really nailed that character, simply superb, in my opinion).

message 5959: by [deleted user] (new)

That was a great movie and a solid performance by Affleck, Gundula!

I'm so glad you agree, Jeannette. I got laughed at in Waterloo when I said that Affleck did a great job portraying an Elizabethan actor. Hmm, I think I should rent the movie again (I lost my copy years ago).

message 5961: by [deleted user] (new)

We watch it every so often. He was a great side-kick to Fiennes' Shakespeare.

message 5962: by [deleted user] (new)

Good morning comfies,
I'm frustrated. The boy that rides to school with us (Benjamin's "BFF") is not being nice to Benjamin lately. Today he got out of the car and wouldn't walk into the school with Benj. I just called his mother and told her that it needs to stop...like yesterday...or I'm not driving him anymore. I usually try to approach this mom very gently because our boys have similar issues, but today I called when I was still heated up in mama grizzly bear mode. I was nice, but I also told it like it was. Now I feel guilty.

message 5963: by [deleted user] (new)

oops! It's hard to keep the mama bear down, isn't it? I'm sure you were nicer than you think. The other mom needs to find out what's bothering her son, too. Take her a cupcake..... :)

message 5964: by Kathy (new)

Kathy (readr4ever) | 1853 comments Good morning all! I'm getting ready to go see granddaughters today. I will spend some time with my youngest and then bring home my oldest to spend the weekend with me. I've been a bit draggy lately, so I hope my energy level is ready for a 9-yr-old, almost 10.

Christine, it would drive me crazy when things like this happened. I just couldn't stand to see one of my kids mistreated. I can completely understand why you called the mother.

I don't think you should feel guilty. You were nice but firm. You have to stand up for your son, and the other mother has to figure out a way to deal with her son's behaviour, Benjamin does not deserve this (no matter what the other child's issues are). In fact, I think that not telling the mother would have been wrong, because if her son is having issues, these need to be addressed and not ignored.

message 5966: by [deleted user] (new)

Thanks girls. I have spent more time than I can believe on the phone today. That mother called me back, and the school case worker is talking to her because there are apparently a lot more issues. I have a headache.

message 5967: by [deleted user] (new)

Obviously this boy is having some problems and I hope they figure out how to help him. Too bad that you and BJ have to suffer for it.

If it will cheer you up, I'll root for the Ravens this weekend! :D

message 5968: by [deleted user] (new)

Please do that! It would cheer me up indeed! (you know me so well)

message 5969: by [deleted user] (last edited Jan 14, 2011 03:31PM) (new)

I'll look for you on the football thread.....

The old man comes home tonight from his business trip to Dallas. He'll be plunked on the sofa for the games and I'll join him for the Ravens. I gotta root for somebody. It helps too that I can't stand the Steelers' QB anymore. I hope they get flattened! :P

Ooops! I'll add more to the other thread later.

You deserve a nice cup of tea (or maybe a big glass of wine). You need to relax, and know that you did the right thing. I have no idea who the Ravens are (probably a football team), but if it'll cheer you up, Ill root for them as well.

message 5971: by Brenda (new)

Brenda | 286 comments It certainly sounds like you did the right thing Christine. As a parent I would really want to know right away if there were any issues with my child. It just sounds like that a lot of things came together all at once for the mother. You being a friend telling her in a nice way probably came much easier for her then from the school case worker.

Baltimore Ravens, who used to be in Indy, but left.....

message 5973: by [deleted user] (new)

Jeannette....no, no, no, the Ravens didn't do that. The Baltimore Colts abandoned Baltimore fans. That's why Baltimore fans hate the Colts.

message 5974: by [deleted user] (new)

Thanks Gundula and Brenda (and all of you supportive ladies).

Aaahh! As soon as I wrote that I had a feeling I had it flipped. I knew you would straighten me out. ;)

Why are you a Baltimore fan? You live in IL, come from OH and went to school in MI, none of them close to MD.

message 5976: by [deleted user] (new)

I also lived in Maryland a few years ago (for almost 3 years), and it's impossible to not fall in love with the Ravens when you live there. (I also lived in California, and I was originally from Buffalo, NY...I get around)

message 5977: by [deleted user] (new)

I went to Baltimore for a 3-day conference and came away being a Raven fan. It can happen that fast! I like their colours..

message 5978: by Kathy (new)

Kathy (readr4ever) | 1853 comments Yikes! Yesterday something very strange happened, and I see that I might be in trouble with you ladies. My granddaughter, who spent the weekend with me, turned me into a Steelers' fan. I didn't even like football, a miracle that she got me to watch the game. I am partial to the Ravens' name, being a fan of Poe and Baltimore, but she bewitched me. Maybe I can forget that it ever happened. I was quite happy watching my Cats play (Kentucky Wildcats) basketball and was fanatic enough about that. I was really surprised that a 9, almost 10-yr-old girl was into football so much. My son-in-law, who is her uncle and married to my daughter (they are raising the darling girl), is responsible, I think.

message 5979: by [deleted user] (new)

Well, you'll have to stay a Steelers' fan for at least one more game, Kathy! That's how long I was a Ravens fan, btw. ;)

message 5984: by [deleted user] (new)

Good morning comfie chatters! I have my bookclub tonight. It seems that nobody read the book except for me and the hostess (that's the first time this has happened, very weird), so we won't really be discussing Outlander. The hostess was going to extend the date, but it doesn't look like anyone intends to finish it anyway. Hmmmm...

Anyway, we have decided to change the way that we choose books so that there is more agreement. Tonight we are all giving 3-4 ideas and then we'll vote on our list for the year. Any suggestions? I want to suggest The Invisible Bridge The Invisible Bridge by Julie Orringer , but not sure what else to throw out there.

LOL! I was thinking maybe it would be the Steelers and the Packers? Still can't believe I'm talking football.

We recently changed the entire format of our bookclub. So often, only one or two people were actually reading the selected book and were showing up to eat and chat...now, we read what we want and share likes/dislikes. A read and tell session, and people seem happy.

message 5988: by Kathy (new)

Kathy (readr4ever) | 1853 comments Christine, in looking back at my reads for 2010, some books that might appeal to a group read are:
The Hand That First Held Mine by Maggie O'Farrell

The Wife's Tale by Lori Lansens

Broken for You by Stephanie Kallos

Every Last One by Anna Quindlen

Moloka'i by Alan Brennert

The Sherlockian by Graham Moore

My local library has a book club just like this that meets once a month. Everyone brings two books with them that they have read in the preceding month and gives a brief review. A nice way to add to my tbr list.

Great suggestions, Kathy! I've read most of those, but would be happy to reread them. The Wife's Tale is on my TBR. Thanks for the ideas!

No meeting tonight. Our hostess has the flu. So I'll be putting the list together by email today.

p.s. I'm still shaking from the Steelers vs. Packers thing. I would have to root for...ugh...the Packers?! Really???

I think this one would be an especially good book club read. There is a nonfiction book that I have on the leper colony at Molokai entitled The Colony: The Harrowing True Story of the Exiles of Molokai by John Tayman. I keep meaning to read it.

What can it be true? No action on the chat thread for two whole days! I'm in shock.

How's everybody doing? I've been quiet lately, just hibernating and trying to pull myself out of the old January blues that come round every year.

I've been trying to actually do some reading and to write some reviews (mostly of some wordless picture books). I think I'm also getting a cold, which isn't fun but that's the way life is. I've got too many books checked out from the library again ...
