No books and movies, Jeannette. He travels very light... manages to pack just a carry on backpack for two weeks travel! He did bring vitamins, however, which are very expensive here and very cheap in the US.

message 5802: by [deleted user] (new)

Pretty impressive packing! It helps that he gets to use your washer, I suppose.

I bring my MIL vitamins from the US, too.

Which film did he get? Happy New Year everyone!! And, I'm glad I'm not the only one who forgets laundry in the washing machine.

message 5804: by [deleted user] (new)

He got two Heinz Ruehmann films: Max der Taschendieb and Es geschah am hellichten Tag, which is one of the creepiest movies I have ever watched. We watched Max over Christmas.

I never realised that Ruehmann also starred in creepy movies. Actually, older, creepy movies (especially in black and white) often tend to freak me out more than modern thrillers where there are often so many special effects that the reality is lacking or at least hard to believe.

message 5806: by [deleted user] (new)

hellichten Tag was adapted from the book by Duerrenmatt. It's a psychological thriller about a cat-and-mouse game between a cop and a child killer. Gert Froebe plays the murderer. No blood and violence, but I still remember the ending after 20 years. The movie's ending was made more "palatable" (for a movie audience) than the book's ending .

Movies and books don't have to have blood and violence to be creepy and frightening. One of the creepiest movies I ever watched was an old black and white flick called "The Spiral Staircase" where a deranged killer stalked and killed people with physical and psychological challenges. You never saw the killer do the deed, but the camera always focused on his eye watching his victim (from a walk in closet where he was hiding). I watched this when I was about twelve years old (it was considered family viewing for some reason) and my bedroom had a walk in closet. I got no sleep that night.

Maude | 479 comments Jeanette, What fun that you got a puzzle for Xmas. I love them myself but never thought to "hint" for one. Next year! And to think you finished it in one day. Strong work.

This one took all week, Maude! I don't stay up until 1 am like I used to doing my puzzle.

Oh, I want to see that one!!

Took the kids to see Tangled today. It was really cute, and pretty funny too.

My hubby wants to go -- maybe tomorrow.

Yes it was scary, also because it was so realistic, many modern thrillers are too weird to be taken seriously.

Manybooks So, I finally wrecked my second (older) laptop today. The screen was already screwed up a bit, but it still worded fine. But, it fell off my desk today and then I tripped over it and fell onto it, so now the screen is really screwed up. I'm not planning on throwing it away just yet, but it does look quite beyond repair and was not behaving all that well anyway. Why am always such a klutz around machinery and computers?

message 5816: by [deleted user] (new)

Are YOU okay? My daughter trip over her headphone cord, and pulled the jack out of the PC. So, no more plugging the PC into her speakers to play music. :(

I'm fine, just embarrassed (my knee is a bit sore, but not as sore as the computer screen, lol).

message 5818: by [deleted user] (new)

Gundula, I'm glad you are okay..we have had a few spills with electronics as well. It's the darn wires!

The King's Speech was fabulous. Really quite moving. And it was fun to see Jennifer Ehle (aka Elizabeth Bennett) in the same movie as Colin Firth, not that she had many lines.

message 5819: by [deleted user] (new)

Thanks for the thumbs-up, Shelley! It probably won't play here, but I'll add it to my netflix queue.

I hate wires and wires hate me. Is "The King's Speech" new or is it available on DVD yet? I love Colin Firth (he and Alan Rickman are among my favourite actors).

message 5821: by [deleted user] (new)

I think it opened in theatres here just before Christmas. Oh yes, Alan Rickman!!!! love him too.

He's so perfect in Sense and Sensibility. And, I really liked him in Galaxy Quest. I know that Tim Allen was supposedly the star, but Rickman really stole the show.

message 5823: by [deleted user] (new)

I absolutely loved Rickman in Galaxy Quest!

message 5824: by [deleted user] (new)

Gundula, watch out for those laptops! You poor thing!

Okay, here is my advice to all comfies....Avoid. All. Stores.
People are insane today. You have bad weather mixed with people shopping for their parties mixed with out-of-town drivers mixed with bargain hunters mixed with these poor old guys who have shopping lists from their wives and have no idea what any of it means. I went out for a few ingredients for my dinner and I was stuck in mayhem for over 90 minutes. People scare me. I should probably go sit in the closet and eat a cupcake.

message 5825: by [deleted user] (new)

You weren't in Wal-Mart again, were you Christine?? Didn't we have this discussion around Thanksgiving?

Hope your dinner goes well!

Happy New Year comfies!! :D

message 5826: by [deleted user] (last edited Dec 31, 2010 04:07PM) (new)

I just went to the grocery store...it was an innocent little trip that introduced me to a hostile side of society. Hold me.

message 5827: by [deleted user] (new)

*HUGGG* I'll call you when it's safe to come outside...

message 5828: by [deleted user] (new)

Happy New Year, Comfies! Rise and shine! I hope everyone had a fun evening, ringing in the New year.

We stayed home to watch movies, play games and eat. The power went out twice, both times for about 45 minutes. It is dark and quiet with the power out. My daughter thought it was boring! lol

message 5829: by [deleted user] (last edited Jan 01, 2011 08:13AM) (new)

Good morning Jeannette! Happy New Year, Comfies!

The kids kept me up late and the pets got me up early. :) That's okay, I have time to watch the Rose Parade in a nice quiet house.

message 5830: by [deleted user] (new)

Who's playing in the Rose Bowl today? I don't follow it anymore.

message 5831: by [deleted user] (new)

Should be Michigan State....but it's not. It's Wisconsin and TCU. I choose not to be bitter. I will support my neighboring state of Wisconsin.

message 5832: by [deleted user] (new)

In which bowl game did MSU end up playing? And why is TCU playing in the Rose Bowl? Why do they have to change things from the way they were 35 years ago???

message 5833: by [deleted user] (new)

We get the mighty Capital One Bowl (Christine is laughing at the ridiculousness).

I am sure that many of you who are avid readers of books featuring strong women, will mourn her death. She was quite something!

Interesting, too, that she was unaware of the connection for 40 years. Thanks, Lance.

Interesting link! Thanks.

message 5839: by [deleted user] (new)

OMG, Christine! Can you share that bag with me? Both Michigan and MSU got creamed. The South has risen! lol

message 5840: by [deleted user] (new)

I saw...it's so very embarrassing...ouch. That sticker of Sparty on my car window needs a little paper sack for his head. (Hey! I should do that, it would be funny)

message 5841: by [deleted user] (new)

That reminds me of an office story! My office partner (male) got a postcard of a rather scantily-clad young lady and displayed it on his desk. I made her some clothes out of Post-it notes, when he wasn't looking. It improved the picture! :P

Maybe a Post-it note bag for poor Sparty...

That's funny, Jeannette! I hope he was a good sport about it. I am going to look for some waterproof removable sticker kind of thing to cut into shape. (Does Christine have too much time on her hands?)

I just got back from seeing the new Disney Rapunzel movie - Tangled with my daughter. I was surprised at how much I enjoyed it. And, it was in 3-D which was fun too!

It was my first 3-D film! It was funny to see everyone watching grabbing the air in front of them at the same time.

I've seen a bunch. And it is tempting to grab at what seems to be something in front of you. the nature ones are the best. Birds flying right in front of you, etc. etc.

We didn't see it in 3D, but I still thought it was a fun movie. Glad you enjoyed it.

Back to school today. I forgot what 5:30 in the morning looked like. Yikes.

message 5849: by [deleted user] (new)

Too early (6:30 for me)! And, as soon as I set an alarm, I start waking at 4:45 for some stupid reason. arrgh

Have a great start to a new year, everyone! :)

Stop by sometime Kathy, Maude, anyone else who's been out for a while....

message 5850: by [deleted user] (new)

Get this. I got in a car accident on the way to taking Emma to school. A high school student in a big truck smashed into the back of us at a stop sign. My poor car is all crunched up in the back. Emma and I are fine. The young man went into panic, gave me his insurance card and his dad's number and went into school! The police officer went and got him back out of school. Yikes. Happy New Year.
