Well, just ask her if she really wants you to cough into the cookie or cake dough. Some people ... Don't get pushed into this, you have to concentrate on no getting sick and/or getting well.

Lisa Vegan (lisavegan) So sorry to hear that, Christine. Ugh.

Yeah, I was going to say what Gundula just said but with less Christmas spirit: add germs to the recipe. Ho ho ho.

It's so common to be sick over Thanksgiving and/or Christmas but what a shame. If any of you are sick you should pick a day when you're all well to do a special celebration.

Hoping for a Christmas "miracle" for you.

message 5753: by [deleted user] (new)

We always call my sister before heading down for Thanksgiving to see who is sick. We've brought the flu home with us too many times.

message 5754: by [deleted user] (new)

Well, we got the first good news of the day: my FIL came through his bypass surgery okay! I think my MIL is shot from waiting and worrying, but at least the news was good. :)

And, we got 5 inches of snow overnight, so we have a real white Christmas!

That is good news. I hope he recovers well.

I spent the morning calling Germany to wish relatives etc. "Frohe Weihnachten" Hope everyone has a great Christmas. Keep warm and read lots of books.

Frohe Weihnachten, Gundula! Good thing you stayed home. My MIL says the airports are a mess right now. There are 200,000 stranded suitcases at the airport in Frankfurt!

And, the train service is chaotic as well. I would not want to spend Christmas at a train station ... Have a good holiday and enjoy your Dampfnudeln.

Kathy (readr4ever) | 1853 comments Merry Christmas, Comfies! We have a white one here, too, just a few inches. It won't stop us from going to my daughter's an hour away. I'm getting ready to fix the scalloped oysters to take. Fixed a pecan pie last night. I'm also in charge of bringing cheeses and crackers.

message 5762: by Manybooks (new)

Manybooks Frohe Weihnachten und ein gutes neues Jahr (Merry Christmas and a happy New Year). Hope you all got the books you wanted.

message 5763: by [deleted user] (new)

Merry Christmas comfies! I was too sick to check in yesterday, but much improved today. The plus side of being so sick is that I may be able to fit into that shirt my sister got for me now...haha!!

I hope that everyone has a great holiday! Jeannette, I'm thinking about you and your brother.

Oh, by the way, I got a new Kindle! My old one died a sad and painful death. The new one is so slim! I had a first generation so this is very different.

Merry Christmas Comfies! Enjoy the time at home or family. Happy reading everyone!

I'm glad you quit barfing, Skinny! Are you headed to the MIL? Enjoy the grandkids Kathy, Maude, and anyone else!

Frohe Weihnachten und ein guten Rutsch!

Kathy (readr4ever) | 1853 comments Christine, I got a Kindle for Christmas, too! I'm so excited! This one is my first. Question: Is there something I need to push or whatever to make the screen go to blank when I'm not using it? Right now it has gone to the person sitting under the tree reading with the definition of "kindle" below it.

message 5767: by [deleted user] (new)

It will do a screen saver unless you turn it off. I usually turn it off. I still have to figure out the features. It's quite different than the first version. It took me a while to realize that it had a home screen button instead of having to scroll to it. I was so confused! Haha! What books are you going to download first, Kathy?

message 5768: by [deleted user] (new)

Hi Jeannette,
Yes, I went to MIL's. I had an appetite back today which shocked me. That was a very punctual 24hour virus.

Did you have a good time (well, anything is better than barfing!!). Was Santa good to you?

This year's gift exchange went really well. New games, new/old videos, books, and nothing with a cord. :D

message 5770: by [deleted user] (new)

I was still tired as heck today, but it was a nice day regardless. I am just happy that Benjamin dodged the virus and had a happy Christmas, and that Emma was better. I got some books that I wanted and a few amazon gift cards for kindling. :)
Emma got a boxed set of graphic novels, and now I will probably not hear a peep out of her for days.

Even when I slide and release the power switch quickly, it still maintains a picture when it is not "awake." At the bottom of the screen, it says, "Slide and release the power switch to wake," at which point it goes to the home setting. When I slide and release to turn it off, it goes to the screen saver picture, which, by the way, changes. Right now it is a picture of Virginia Woolf, which is cool. I guess I need to do the tutorial on the Kindle to make sure I'm doing everything right. I downloaded my first book last night, The Tale of Halcyon Crane, a title that I want to read but wasn't sure about buying the book. So, now I have it on my Kindle to read, but it's not another one I have perched precariously on a stack in my house.

message 5773: by [deleted user] (new)

To turn it off you really have to hold that button for a minute. It takes mine a while to accept that I want to shut it off.

message 5774: by [deleted user] (new)

Kathy,
I regularly check the amazon's kindle blog page for limited time free downloads. Every now and then they will have a good list of freebies. I'll let you know when I see anything good.

Thanks, Christine. Free is good! Also, thanks for the info on turning it off. I will try that. OK, not working yet, but I will keep trying. I do love the pictures that come up as screen savers, though.

message 5776: by [deleted user] (new)

But you'll waste too much battery. I hope your switch isn't broken.

message 5777: by Kathy (new)

Kathy (readr4ever) | 1853 comments Christine wrote: "But you'll waste too much battery. I hope your switch isn't broken."

It went off, just wasn't holding the switch long enough. I have it plugged in right now, so it remaining in sleep mode shouldn't have affected the battery. Thank you so much for telling me how to do that. I'm really like a kid having gotten a favorite toy for Christmas. I promise not to abandon printed books (can't imagine me doing that), but the Kindle is already proving to be loads of fun.

message 5778: by Lisa (new)

Lisa Vegan (lisavegan) I wish my library had Kindle books, but Amazon will never let that happen. I'd want a Kindle if I could read borrowed library books on it. As it is, if I ever get an e-reader, it will have to be one that accepts books from my library. I notice that at least 6 versions of the Sony e-reader do, as well as a bunch of others, and both Windows and Apple computers do too, the Apple iPad included, but I know they don't have the book-like page quality of the Kindle, and maybe some other dedicated e-readers too.

message 5779: by [deleted user] (new)

Lisa,
The Nook has the paper appearance and it allows you to use the library.

Kathy, I still get books on paper if I am planning to keep them. Anything about India is paper for me. But the kindle is wonderful for saving money on new releases, and it's fantastic for travel.

Yay! That switch does need convincing to power down, eh?

message 5781: by Kathy (new)

Kathy (readr4ever) | 1853 comments I'm sure I'll continue to still buy many, many books, especially my favorite authors since I like to get them signed when possible. And, yes it do, Christine. LOL!

Lisa Vegan (lisavegan) Christine wrote: "Lisa,

Christine, I'll check my library again but don't remember Nook books being compatible with their e-books. I will look again though. Thank you!

message 5783: by Lisa (new)

Lisa Vegan (lisavegan) I was wrong. Christine, you are right.

Here's the list for e-books from my library/compatible devices:

http://www.overdrive.com/resources/dr...

So, with the Nook though, for purchased books they have to be bought from B & N?

message 5784: by Lisa (new)

Lisa Vegan (lisavegan) I am irked with Amazon. I'd like a Kindle but not with their conditions.

message 5785: by Manybooks (new)

Manybooks Lisa wrote: "I am irked with Amazon. I'd like a Kindle but not with their conditions."

I agree, and I also don't like the fact that Amazon supposedly knows what you are reading and is supposedly also keeping tabs on what you buy and what you read on your Kindle. Not acceptable, in my opinion.

message 5786: by [deleted user] (new)

Lisa, I don't have a Nook so I am not sure if books have to be bought through B&N. My friend has one and uses the library with her's, that's all I know. I looked at her device, and the screen quality was very similar to the Kindle. She loves her Nook.

message 5787: by Lisa (new)

Lisa Vegan (lisavegan) Gundula wrote: "I also don't like the fact that Amazon supposedly knows what you are reading and is supposedly also keeping tabs on what you buy and what you read on your Kindle."

Kindle (and I assume the other e-reader companies) can also take books out of your device without your permission. Yikes! And some are abridged, apparently, though I think that's not common.

Christine wrote: "My friend has one and uses the library with her's, that's all I know. I looked at her device, and the screen quality was very similar to the Kindle. She loves her Nook."

Thanks, Christine. I'll consider a Nook. I think except for borrowing and open source/classics/etc. you do have to buy from B & N, just as you have to buy from Amazon for a Kindle.

Kindle (and I as..."

The fact that Amazon knows what you are reading and can take books off of your device without permission is one of the main reasons why I will probably never buy a Kindle. I'm actually not that impressed with Amazon lately, but sometimes I have to order from them because they do have books that are hard to get otherwise.

message 5789: by Lisa (new)

Lisa Vegan (lisavegan) Gundula, I don't like Amazon either, yet I do keep ordering from them. I don't buy that many books, and I do make it a point to buy at least one book a year from each of my local independent bookstores, but Amazon is cheaper, and since I've been buying from them from a decade and a half, it's a really easy process. *sigh*

message 5790: by [deleted user] (new)

My favourite independent bookstore closed this past year - and I'm still in mourning. I usually go to Amazon for online purchases, but had no idea they were so big-brother like. I'm not sure who mentioned it, but someone from this group pointed me to thebookdepository.com and it is even cheaper than Amazon, and I can find titles there not available in Canada.

Shelley, I use The Book Depository and it is cheaper than Amazon. I like their free shipping policy with no minimum order.

message 5792: by Lisa (new)

Lisa Vegan (lisavegan) I'm definitely going to have to check out, and at least set up an account, at The Book Depository. I've heard about it for at least a couple of years, but haven't yet explored the site.

message 5793: by [deleted user] (new)

Movie night for me. I finally watched Inception. I haven't been that confused since the Lost finale, haha!
I finished two books that I was working on as well. So obviously no laundry got done. I hope that everyone had a good day.

message 5794: by [deleted user] (new)

Hey Christine! I did laundry, went grocery shopping and finished my 1000pc jigsaw puzzle. That's why I'm still online at midnight! :)

message 5795: by [deleted user] (new)

I did laundry two days ago and then I forgot about it and left it mouldering in the washer. It's been rewashed now, but it's so easy to forget about doing your laundry, especially if your washer and dryer are in the garage (and you hate doing laundry).

message 5797: by [deleted user] (new)

I have a bad habit of leaving clothes in the washing machine - I'm blaming it on my shrinking short term memory. Today I'm going to see Colin Firth in The King's Speech...I love him so.

message 5798: by [deleted user] (new)

Let us know what you think about The King's Speech, Shelley.

Tell Emma I get a new puzzle every year at Christmas, 1000-1500 pieces. This year's puzzle was hard, but enjoyable.

Nobody likes doing laundry, do they?

Have a fun day everyone. All of our snow is melting (high 30's here). Yuck.

message 5799: by [deleted user] (new)

Hi Comfies!. Just wanted to pop in and say Merry late Christmas. I've been busy with a hundred stupid things, and my brother is here from the states and so I haven't had time to come and chat, but I have been keeping an eye on the threads. Hope you are all well.

Happy New Year to everyone. Hope everyone has a lovely safe evening.

message 5800: by [deleted user] (new)

Happy New Year, Hayes! Glad to hear that your brother made it over. Did he bring you lots of good stuff (books, movies)? My husband got an old German film for Christmas and we played it on the old PC, using the flat screen as a monitor. It worked out great.
