Lisa Vegan (lisavegan) Christine, I'm sure it's horribly painful but having a sprain is better than a break; it will heal faster at least, and you'll most likely have fewer problems in the future with that toe/area.

I found this site when I was looking for Jeannette's message, but I didn't notice the link for the smileys. Thanks, Christine.

And, yes the toe still hurts like the dickens even if it's not broken. I jammed my little finger at last May or June, and it still hurts. The x-ray showed that it wasn't broken, but I don't see how much more it could have hurt if it was.

Here are the ones I want to learn. They are easier to read.

Scroll down to Section 2 of this article for the really cools ones that are used on Japanese chat forums:

Manybooks I heard a really cute joke today:

A little boy is just starting grade three and his grandmother asks him if he has started to learn cursive writing. He looks at her for a moment and then responds, "Well, Grandma, I know the words "damn" and "hell" and I know there is an "F" word, but you should not be asking me such a question. Mom says cursing is wrong."

message 5655: by [deleted user] (new)

That's cute, Gundula! :)

I thought it was really cute, and actually an understandable misunderstanding.

Bye bye, comfies! I'm off to Ohio to visit my mother for the weekend. I'll check in on Sunday night. Have a great weekend!

message 5658: by [deleted user] (new)

Have a safe trip, kiddo! Say hi to all those Buckeyes! :p

Have fun!

message 5659: by [deleted user] (new)

Thanks Jeannette! Be good! :)

The hubby is working the last day of 2010 today, and then it's two weeks of chillin' fun.

Hello comfies, I'm sitting here going through all my recipe books looking for some good muffin and pastry recipes. We are hosting a very short morning get-together with my family to exchange gifts tomorrow. So far I've decided to make my pumpkin muffins (because they always turn out) and pain au chocolat which I've never made.

message 5663: by [deleted user] (new)

chocolate bread -- how can it fail? Have a wonderful time tomorrow, hosting in your new home! :)

message 5664: by [deleted user] (new)

One more week until Christmas all you comfies! I hope everyone is enjoying the last week of shopping and looking forward to seeing friends and family.

Safe trip, Christine! Are all the kids coming home, Kathy? How are you doing with the cat, Maude?

I hope a few more of you will check in over Christmas and let us know how you are doing.... :)

message 5665: by Kathy (new)

Kathy (readr4ever) | 1853 comments I finished my Christmas cards and got them all sent out yesterday, finally. I, also, finished wrapping presents, which makes my Christmas tree look very inviting now. Hubby will be home Wednesday. Family--ours and husband's sister's--will be going to our daughter's for Christmas. We all take dishes and exchange our gifts. It's been a Christmas where I'm really pleased with the gifts I've gotten family and friends, so I can't wait to see them open them. A couple of friends and I are getting together Monday for our Christmas lunch and exchanging gifts. I haven't scheduled it with another friend yet. Guess I better call her today. It's beginning to look a lot like Christmas!

Hi from Ohio! Just popping in to say hi. It was a long drive, but we're here safely.

message 5667: by [deleted user] (new)

Wow, Kathy, you'll be happily busy! :) The only exchange we participate in is long-distance. My in-laws open their gifts on 12/24 and then call us. We open gifts on 12/25 and then call them.

We shorted them (in a big way) last year, so this year we over-did it. I think they are surprised, and I hope they will like everything we sent.

Good news! Have fun in Ohio! :)

We're going shopping for a new TV. My husband got a year-end bonus and I think he should spend it.

Jeannette, You look different!

Well, my sister fed my poor puppy too much crap even though I told her not to give her anything non-dog food, and now Dixie is sick. My mother has already lost patience with having kids in the house (we visit once a year for 2 days.....really? Is it that difficult to be around non-adults for 2 days?). My sister and my step-dad are arguing about potatoes. Pass the wine please.

Christine, have a few glasses of wine and chill out. I wonder though, did you mother lose patience with having kids in the house when you were young as well? Hope Dixie is feeling better soon. Honestly, why can't people listen, you know your dog and what she can safely eat. Keep your head up and drink some wine (I wish I had some as well, my parents are bugging me to fly to Germany, but again, no invitation for my boyfriend, this is getting ridiculous).

message 5674: by [deleted user] (new)

Gundula, She didn't have much tolerance for kids then either. That's a story for a memoir, haha! The thing that gets me is that my kids have been so quiet. I don't get it.

No invite for your boyfriend? Why aren't they including him?

message 5675: by [deleted user] (new)

Oh, Dixie was feeling better and my sister immediately started sneaking her food again. Like cookies...argh! I am ready to go home.

Our annual Christmas picture, drawn by my daughter. :)

message 5677: by [deleted user] (new)

Gundula, there is too much snow in Germany right now to safely travel! Plenty of airport closings. (Truly, and it's a good excuse, too.) Why don't you and your boyfriend plan a trip for the spring and surprise them! Like, "Hey, we'll be there on x-date."

I can't believe they are still excluding him! How many years have the two of you been together?

message 5678: by [deleted user] (last edited Dec 18, 2010 03:47PM) (new)

What's up with your family, Christine? I just can't imagine that your kids are causing much of a ruckus. Stay home next year! Don't feel bad about it, either. Hide Dixie.

message 5679: by [deleted user] (new)

Excellent picture! She is quite an artist!

My family is the thing of bad comedy movies. It's all I can do to visit 2 days a year. And the kids aren't doing anything to cause problems. But they are ready to go home too.

They just don't like him and their policy is to invite me and not him. With the result that I have not seen them for a few years, a pain in the butt, but it is of their own making.

We might actually do that sometime. Or, get married and surprise them as husband and wife, my family would freak. I heard the weather turned nasty again, wow, Germany and the rest of Europe sure is getting hit (global warming, in my opinion).

Manybooks Christine wrote: "Oh, Dixie was feeling better and my sister immediately started sneaking her food again. Like cookies...argh! I am ready to go home."

You should do that. I cannot believe your sister started sneaking Dixie food again, especially after she has been sick, really irresponsible.

I wish I could draw like that.

message 5685: by [deleted user] (new)

So, do I! It's her new cartoon style that's she playing around with, hence the large round hands and feet.

message 5686: by Kathy (new)

Kathy (readr4ever) | 1853 comments Jeannette, love the picture. You're daughter is very talented. Wow! Christine, escape, fast! Your sister must not have a dog, or she should know that you aren't being kind to give dogs people food from the table, especially sweets. Maybe you could teach Dixie to throw up on your sister's shoes. Poor little Dixie. I agree with Jeannette, that you shouldn't subject yourself and your loved ones to the unpleasantness next year. Gundula, that is horrible that your parents don't accept your boyfriend. I think you are right to not visit without him. It looks like your parents would want to see you bad enough to include him in the invite.

I'd love to see more of her drawings, Jeannette. Maybe you could post some more on your profile. Is she interested in pursuing her art. I sure hope so.

I agree, and I basically should tell them that if they really want to see me, they will include him as well, but when I'm talking to them on the phone, I usually end up chickening out. Maybe I should write them a letter instead.

Manybooks Brenda wrote: "Love the picture Jeannette, your daughter is very talented. Gundula sorry your parents are excluding your boyfriend. It sounds like you aren't letting it get to you though. It really is their loss."

Well, it does get to me Brenda, it really kills that they are being so stubborn (well, I guess I'm being a bit stubborn too), because I would really love to see my nieces etc. And, it's negatively affecting my relationship with my boyfriend as well. It honestly feels as though I need to choose between them, which is not nice at all. I feel like Christine, I would like some wine as well (or some whine).

message 5695: by [deleted user] (new)

It's really sad, Gundula, when family acts that way. Do your siblings feel the same way, too? Could you go with your boyfriend and stay with someone else. Maybe if you stand up to them, they'll back down? It's an awful situation -- I wish you the best. Have a nice warm mulled wine by the fire with your boyfriend tonight.

I'll have to get some wine, but that might be a good idea. Right now I'm having some green tea which always makes me feel better.

There is so much she can do with this amazing talent of hers! Please keep us updated on her art. I'm so excited for her. Great things await her!

message 5698: by Brenda (new)

Brenda | 286 comments Gundula I'm sorry that things have been so difficult. Writing a letter may at least let them know how you feel about it. My parents got a face to face from my sisters husband and basically he told them he never wanted to see them again and hasn't. It has been difficult but now we are all at a happy medium. It is diffulcult for my sister.

message 5699: by Maude (new)

Maude | 479 comments Christine, Loved your acronym chart - I had NO idea there were so many - interesting and funny. Thank goodness you only go to your parents for 2 days. I continue to be saddened by what parents do and say to their grown children (and their not so grown) in an effort to confirm them into their beliefs, their lifestyle, and their pick of boyfriends. Fortunately, as adults we can make our own choices and they do not really need to be discussed with parents, unless they want to. It is not easy when you have been raised to have respect and love for your parents.

Good morning! I woke up to a sore throat and a son with a sore throat, but I'm just happy to be home. We plan on laying low today anyway. I'm going to put my baking off for a couple of days so that I don't spread the germs.
