Ice is scary! Especially for driving. Every time my husband leaves the office to come home I hold my breath.

Wow, that's early, but you're right, I think, last year, northern Germany had quite the winter as well.

message 5503: by [deleted user] (new)

When we lived in Braunschweig in the early 1990's we never got any snow. Now my in-laws are always hoping it won't snow on their day to "sweep". They get some heavy snow, too, once in a while.

message 5504: by [deleted user] (new)

Hi! I was watching the baby today (and tomorrow too) so I missed you all online! My furnace is fixed. Good thing because it was so cold today. We are expecting 8 inches of snow tomorrow.

message 5505: by [deleted user] (new)

Still not much snow in the forecast, but it's cold!!!

message 5506: by Brenda (new)

Brenda | 286 comments I agree with hating ice. I can handle most of the rest in short bursts.

message 5507: by [deleted user] (new)

Short bursts -- one week out of the year would suit me just fine. ;) We did have a very long Fall, and a mild summer, so Winter is an unknown right now.

How well do they do at sanding/salting the roads? It is scary. I worry about my friends living in snowy/icy areas.

I've never had to drive much in it, but when I've lived in snowy areas, I used to tend to fall on my butt on the icy patches. No fun!

message 5509: by [deleted user] (new)

They tend to lay down sand here, I think because it's too cold for the salt to work, and it's more eco-friendly, perhaps.

Lee (leekat) | 3959 comments Mod
Here they use salt and plows of course but when it snows a lot it's hard to keep up.

message 5511: by [deleted user] (new)

Off to babysit again! I'm so tired at the moment. Hopefully it will be a quiet weekend. Have a great start!

message 5512: by [deleted user] (new)

Not only do I have a blasted sinus infection, but I have pink eye, too. *sigh* Great/lousy excuse to do nothing.

Maude | 479 comments Christine and Jeannette - I am sending you BEST WISHES to feel better soon!

Thanks, Maude! :) I've got anti-biotic eye drops, so I hope it runs its course soon.

Oh no Jeannette, I'm sorry to hear that.

We just got back from braving the hordes at the mall. It wasn't fun. We also hit Toys R Us with our daughter in tow. That was fun. I'm so thankful I can do part of my shopping online. Thank god for the internet.

Manybooks Jeannette wrote: "Not only do I have a blasted sinus infection, but I have pink eye, too. *sigh* Great/lousy excuse to do nothing."

Hope you get better soon, pink eye is not fun. Take care of yourself this weekend, relax, and try to get your resistance up (herbal tea, vitamins, relaxation). And, let someone else cook dinner, you need some time-outs.

message 5517: by [deleted user] (new)

Thanks you two! :) Pink eye is so weird. I woke up and my eyes were stuck shut. The cold itself isn't too bad. My biggest mistake was not taking it easy early in the week. But, I didn't have a fever, so I ignored my own advice. I'll stay home this morning while my two "kids" go for their taekwondo belt test.

I'll have to see what they can come up with for dinner. My daughter will say Chinese take-out!! lol

I've done a bit of online stuff this year, too. It's even easier now that we can all make wishlists on amazon.com.

Sounds yummy! Are you rested up today?

I realized when you said this that I haven't been to Toys R Us this year. I usually go multiple times at Christmas, but since I signed up for Amazon Prime I haven't gone. I kinda miss browsing the store though.

Lee (leekat) | 3959 comments Mod
Hehehe, I've sent my husband back to do the dirty work this morning! He can brave the toystore crowds and line up at the cash.

What's Amazon prime? Is that where you pay for extra speedy delivery?

message 5522: by [deleted user] (new)

You pay one time a year, I think it was $60, and shipping is free on everything for a year. It's also quicker shipping...the 2 day shipping. I love that there is no minimum purchase for free shipping

message 5523: by [deleted user] (new)

I'm such a cheapskate. I just bundle my orders and deal with the 5-day shipping. It is pretty neat that I can pre-order to qualify for free shipping. They send it all separate, but I don't pay any shipping. Of course, they own me for the next 6 months! lol

Jeannette, I do the same thing. $25 isn't that much to bundle.

message 5525: by [deleted user] (last edited Dec 04, 2010 12:38PM) (new)

I know -- I never have trouble reaching $25. :)

I do quite a bit of pre-ordering of my manga, because the volumes are always coming out a few months down the road. It's a great way to keep tabs on new releases.

message 5526: by Lisa (new)

Lisa Vegan (lisavegan) And if you've pre-ordered and the price goes down, you get the new price, and if the price goes up you've locked in the lower price. Smart!

message 5527: by [deleted user] (new)

It's win-win, Lisa! I actually got a refund last month, around a dollar. The bad thing for now is, I've got a Christmas wishlist, to make gift selection easy for my husband, and the prices are going up!! (Okay, 80 cents maybe, but still!)

message 5528: by [deleted user] (new)

Jeannette, you are too funny! I saw your little scarf joke. Anyway, I hope that your pink eye is much better tomorrow.

Good night to all comfies! I'm off to read with my tea.

message 5529: by [deleted user] (new)

I couldn't let the scarf pass. Dixie is one smart guard dog!!

Pink eye is maddening, and the throat thing comes and goes. I really am getting tired of waking up at 2am with dry hacking. :P

Sleep well!

On a side note: We watched a quirky movie tonight, "Sunshine Cleaning" with Amy Adams. It really shows the range she has as an actress.

Oh, I liked that movie, and I love Amy Adams. Enchanted is probably my favorite.

message 5532: by [deleted user] (new)

That was a fun movie! I watched Love Actually again last night for the 25th time.

message 5533: by [deleted user] (new)

I saw Love Actually in the theater. I don't know, some of the stories were excellent (especially Rickman and Thompson), but the majority fell short for me. It was a pleasant diversion on the whole.

I'm actually glad I waited to see Love Actually on DVD. I did enjoy it, but I agrre that it was rather disjointed (on the other hand, I will watch anything with Alan Rickman, he is simply to die for).

message 5535: by [deleted user] (new)

And, his story in the movie was the one I felt was the most authentic. A few of the other stories were too over the top: Would Britain's PM allow his girlfriend to jump him at the airport? Would she be so "ill-mannered" that she actually would?

I did like the best-friend story, and the two porn stand-ins.

I don't remember much about that movie, but I know that I enjoyed it a lot. My friend lent it to me a few years ago. I'd like to watch it again.

message 5537: by [deleted user] (new)

Today I am wrapping gifts, doing laundry, and watching football. What is everyone else up to?

message 5538: by [deleted user] (new)

We're buying the tree today. I was finally able to open my eyes this morning without assistance, so I seem to be making a recovery! I am sure there will be football tonight, too.

We got our tree today too Jeannette. We've just finished decorating it and I'm now sitting down with a hot cup of tea and a plate of warm chocolate chip cookies. I'm going to eat far too many of them and I don't care! Sitting in the living room with the tree lit up brings me the warmest feeling. I love it!

message 5540: by [deleted user] (new)

Lee, that sounds heavenly! What type of tree do you get?

message 5541: by [deleted user] (new)

Yum! We left our tree to "thaw" overnight. We'll decorate it after dinner. I love it that the whole house smells like spruce! :)

I could watch that movie over and over again, and have, too, Shelley. I just love it!

Kathy (readr4ever) | 1853 comments Poor Jeannette, I do hope by today you are feeling much better with your eyes. Christine, glad you got your furnace fixed. Was it Maude that was having furnace problems, too? Hope that got resolved, too. One of my friends is without her furnace right now, found out what was wrong on Friday, too late to do anything about it. Of course, it has turned very cold here, too, snowing right now, not a lot, but sticking some. I'm supposed to go in for half a day to substitute teach today. I will have to check to see if there will be an early dismissal, as it seems we do get out of school whenever the S word occurs.

Oh, and in Love Actually, it was this movie in which I fell in love with Bill Nighey (the aged rock star).

Lee, that's just the best, sitting and taking comfort in the Christmas tree lights.

message 5545: by [deleted user] (new)

Oh, yes, I think that was when I fell in love with Nighey, too!

I am getting better, slowly. I really was lazy all weekend, which helped. But now I have a bazillion things I want to do.

Hey Maude! Did you get your furnace replaced??

message 5546: by [deleted user] (new)

Good morning! Hi Kathy, I missed you the last couple of days! :)
Jeannette, don't overdo it with a bazillion things. You don't want to relapse at all. Keep it to maybe a half million, okay?
Today for me is cleaning, cleaning, cleaning. I have book club tonight, and I am babysitting most of the week.

Kathy (readr4ever) | 1853 comments Christine, what's your book for book club?

message 5549: by [deleted user] (last edited Dec 06, 2010 09:46AM) (new)

It's The Beautiful Things That Heaven Bears The Beautiful Things That Heaven Bears by Dinaw Mengestu ...and ugh! It got really good reviews, but it bored me to tears. I'm pretty sure that a few others in my group felt the same way. We'll see. We're going out tonight to celebrate our first year together. It's been a long time since our last meeting due to scheduling problems.

message 5550: by Maude (new)

Maude | 479 comments Jeanette, No, I haven't done anything with the furnace but it is keeping me warm. I am taking care of my two grandkids right now. Their grandmother is very bad - just had a stroke and my son and daughter-in-law went down (Burbank, CA) so things not too good right now. They all did just see her about a month ago but the kids wanted to see her one more time. I think they are more upset than they are letting on. I am waiting today to hear how she is.
