Welcome back! Does your husband have a job offer near where you live? Will he leave the military? Good luck!

Kathy (readr4ever) | 1853 comments LOL! You all are too funny! That's why I love this chat so much. Thanks for calling the rescue squad and letting them know I'm safe, Maud. Jeannette, he has left the military now and will go to work for a contractor, which actually does work for the military. No, he won't be near home, going back to Kansas again.

Manybooks Kathy, glad you are back (hope your husband finds a job, how is it going with him at home on a permanent basis?). I've only been popping in sporadically as well last week, lots of silly things to do and I don't know about you, but I've found Goodreads very, very slow recently, so slow that at times I simply gave up and did something else (I have better things to do than to sit and wait for the GR homepage to load).

Now that you mention it, Gundula, it has been slow. Husband being home has been an interesting challenge when I'm used to being here by myself, but we've adjusted better than I had feared. It does look like he's going to be moving back to Kansas again very soon, though.

Hi Kathy! I noticed that you were gone, but I assumed that everyone who was missing may be traveling. But of course I missed you!!

How do you feel about him going back to Kansas, Kathy? Would you ever consider going to Kansas with your husband (but, I bet you would not want to be so far away from your grandchildren).

I uploaded the picture that I may use for my Christmas card on my profile.

Great photo! All three of them are adorable!

Thanks Lisa! Emma doesn't like it, but I am pretty sure that she wouldn't like any. She hates her neck (??????).

I have mixed feelings about him going back, but there are just not any good jobs here. I have thought about going with him, but you hit the nail on the head about not wanting to leave the grandkids. We'll see how the job goes, and then I might go out there some. Not sure now.

Good morning to the Land of Comfort! I could not get to sleep last night so I'm a little punchy at the moment. I'm sure that by the middle of the day I'll be a zombie (the non-flesh eating type, because that's just gross). My big exciting day is...drumroll...laundry and a trip to Office Depot. I know that you are all jealous of my big exciting day.

Have a great start!

message 5466: by [deleted user] (new)

Woohoo! I went to the post office yesterday! It is just too blinking cold here, so today I'm staying home. I still have a bit of a cold from Thanksgiving, which just gives me a blah sort of feeling....

Have a fun day everyone! It's time to start those Christmas cards. :)

My furnace is broken. Of course it is. It's the first snow of the year, and the first day under 30 degrees. What an ideal day for such a breakdown. (Christine is saying bad words....cover your ears)

Wow, Murphy's Law in action!! Hope you get the furnace fixed as soon as possible (and, you have every right to say "bad" words, let them rip).

message 5470: by Maude (new)

Maude | 479 comments Christine, we have twin problems! I woke up to three feet of snow on the day I was going to try and find a new furnace. It is on its last legs and comes on for about 5 minutes, off for 20, etc. I am never truly warm. At least it is still working somewhat. Good luck!

message 5471: by [deleted user] (last edited Dec 01, 2010 07:36AM) (new)

Look on the bright side Christine: It is a week day, before 5pm. Our furnace quit on a Friday evening a few years ago. We set up a heater near the fish tank and went to bed. They wanted an extra $100 just to come out after hours. :( I hope they come soon and get it fixed.

Good luck Maude! Three feet of snow and a faulty furnace -- you can warm up by shoveling out, I suppose. I hate winter....

Oh Yikes!! I hope you get your's fixed. Our house is dropping in temp really fast, and I'm mainly worried about my daughter's hamster and the cats. Luckily the kids are at school.

message 5473: by [deleted user] (new)

The animals will be fine. You could always bake some cupcakes to heat the kitchen. :) Is the sun shining at all?

Yes, that is usually my luck too. The first night that we moved into this house (which happened to be New Years Eve) we had a gas leak that filled an entire wall of the house. We had to evacuate as ordered by the gas company guy (at 2:00 AM on New Years Eve...guess how much that cost?) during a minor snow storm in the middle of the night (with my mother-in-law in toe because she came to stay and help us move in). It was almost comical.

message 5475: by [deleted user] (last edited Dec 01, 2010 07:55AM) (new)

Another weird thing to throw out there today as I sit here freezing....I wonder what you guys would guess. My sister-in-law always gets something from a "As Seen On TV" ad for everyone for Christmas. One year we all got Snuggies. I am curious as to what it will be this year. I'm guessing either the "Wonder file" or that pasta thing for the microwave. Any guesses??

How about those "gently used" plastic plates from Thanksgiving? Makes a thoughtful gift, for sure.

Give it to her right now, Christine!! This is an emergency situation. See how thoughtful your SIL was being.

message 5483: by Maude (new)

Maude | 479 comments Christine, If you don't think your furnace is worth fixing, you can still get a big tax write-off if you buy a new one. That is what I am going to have to do since mine is almost defunct. We only have until the end of December to do tho'. Try and stay warm!

message 5484: by Manybooks (new)

Manybooks Christine, maybe you should give your SIL some cheap plates and cutlery for Christmas (better not, but it would be funny). And, Jeannette, you will get your points, I almost spilled tea on my computer when I read your post (but, I'm incredibly klutzy today anyway, I already had to change my clothes once, spilled cold canned tomatoes all over me, instead of putting them into the pot, ha, I hope the stew I'm making is worth all of this).

message 5485: by Maude (new)

Maude | 479 comments Oh, Gundula, NOT tomatoes!!! I hope you can get your clothes clean and that your stew is delicious!

message 5486: by Manybooks (new)

Manybooks Maude wrote: "Oh, Gundula, NOT tomatoes!!! I hope you can get your clothes clean and that your stew is delicious!"

Well, they are dark clothes, blue jeans and socks, but I better do the laundry now and not later (I hate doing laundry). The stew had better be delicious, otherwise I will be seriously bummed out.

message 5487: by [deleted user] (new)

I only get half a point for you Gundula! You are prone to spilling and Christine did expel coffee through her nose. lol

The tableware for the SIL is a great idea! Maybe you can find something with a fall pattern on sale, Christine?

I hope you treated those tomato stains right away, Gundula. I always splash myself when I cook with any kind of tomatoes! Every time, never fails.

Maude | 479 comments We have had three feet of snow this morning and it is still coming down. This little old man who lives about 4 houses down is using his snow blower machine or whatever it is to clean the sidewalks of snow. I think that is SO SO NICE OF HIM! He did it about 4 years ago also (we don't always get this much snow and in fact it is still coming down - there is a LOT of it)and I made him cookies only to find out he is a diabetic and didn't want anything.

There's a guy who enjoys running his snow blower! My neighbor does our front walk every snow day, too. :)

That is so nice, kind of makes one have faith in humanity!! Maybe, you should offer him a book to read instead ...

message 5492: by Maude (new)

Maude | 479 comments I went out and thanked him, and shook his hand. Then I went in and got the Ice Melt and put it on my walkway to the house, a strip of the driveway and all along the front walk until I ran out. I feel great!

message 5493: by [deleted user] (new)

Our snow blower neighbor just moved! He did the walks and driveways of 5 families every time. We always offered him gas, but he never wanted it.

I'm gonna miss that dude.

Kathy (readr4ever) | 1853 comments My goodness, so many in the land of snow. It's cold here, but no snow yet. Well, I think I did see a few weak flakes yesterday, but we haven't had a snowfall yet. We don't get much snow, which I have mixed feelings about, as I love to snuggle up inside when it's snowing, but I don't like having to get out in it. There seems to be some really nice neighbors around you all during the snow. Good to hear! Oh, Lee, and I like the "sweetie patooties" too.

How are the two heat-less ladies doing today? I had the furnace guy here this morning for the annual check-up. I remembered him from last year, talking about his upcoming wedding. Well, they married in June and are expecting their first child in May! :D Oh, my furnace checked out okay.

Kathy, snow is not like a Currier and Ives print, at least not in Iowa. Try shoveling the stuff when it's 20 outside and blowing. brrrrr

Well, I still like snow much better than the foggy, rainy and dreary winters you tend to get in Northern Germany (and even in Ontario at times). But, the worst of the worst is freezing rain!!

message 5500: by [deleted user] (new)

It was snowing in Hildesheim this week. The weather pattern seems to have changed in Northern Germany. My in-laws get a lot more snow now.

I hate ice!
