Lisa Vegan (lisavegan) Joy, My Seattle friends have work/school snow days today! They have before but I don't think so early in the season.

Happy Thanksgiving to everyone who is celebrating it today!

Is anyone here one of those Black Friday shoppers? (not me!)

I have a question. Is American Thanksgiving always on a Thursday? Just curious.

It's always on the 4th Thursday of November. And most people, but not all, get 4 day weekends.

Thanks Lisa! Happy Thanksgiving.

Maude | 479 comments Christine, I love Dixie's log. She is a very funny, and witty dog. Pretty, too!

message 5410: by [deleted user] (new)

I think Diva Dixie is a star! Hope she is getting her fair share of turkey.

message 5411: by [deleted user] (new)

Thanks Maude and Shelley! She had a nice Thanksgiving. :)

message 5412: by [deleted user] (new)

Okay, this is suckish. There is a four story Borders on Michigan Avenue in downtown Chicago that is my "happy place". I'm not even kidding. Whenever I go to the city I will spend hours there. It has everything, and it's roomy and beautiful (not too common for a chain store). I go every Black Friday. Anyway, I went yesterday and found out that they were closing. They lost their lease to someone who outbid them for the space (and there is a new owner for that building). So even though I got some great discounts, it was depressing as heck. I lost my happy place!!!

Lee (leekat) | 3959 comments Mod
Oh no! How terrible to be losing your happy place! I'm sorry Christine. Is the store moving somewhere else???

message 5414: by [deleted user] (new)

They didn't know. The employees were caught off guard and just told before Black Friday.

What a shame!

message 5416: by [deleted user] (new)

It's always sad to lose a bookstore, even a chain store! :(

message 5417: by Joan (new)

Joan I love that store! I bought my first Christopher Moore book there. It was 'Lamb: The Gospel of Biff'. So many downtowns are loosing their book stores.

How typical, telling the employees at the last moment. This is sad for everyone, both the employees and the customers.

The Chicago Borders? You've been there too? It has always been such a treat to go there. I am bummed.

And Gundula, the employees were pissed (not towards the customers, they were very kind in answering all of the questions). You can tell that it went badly.

I always get angry when employees are regarded as second class citizens and not kept abreast of important developments, it is one of the reasons why I tend to believe that labour unions are still important (if a store is closing, or if a store's lease is up, that information "must" be relayed to the employees, so they can at least make plans).

message 5421: by [deleted user] (new)

Good morning! How is everyone today? I have 3 days of watching the baby this week, so I need to get everything else done today.

My kids made gingerbread bouses last night. They turned out really cute. We used chocolate cookie pieces instead of gingerbread (it was a kit from Hershey).

message 5422: by [deleted user] (new)

Good morning comfies! I hope everyone had a great holiday and/or weekend. We had a great time at my sister's house. Too much food, but lots of fun!

We had a funny experience on the way home. A friend of my sister had spent Thanksgiving in Minneapolis, and we ran into them at the rest stop in Iowa! They were heading south and we were nearly home. Five minutes later and we would have missed seeing them. What a funny end to the weekend! :)

3 weeks until Christmas vacation -- I can hardly wait.

Have a wonderful day! :)

message 5423: by [deleted user] (new)

How crazy that you ran into them!

I'm glad that you had a good time and had safe travel. We missed you!

message 5424: by [deleted user] (new)

I missed all of you, too! (I did peak in once in a while). How did your dinner go? Where did you find the cookie house recipe? I don't much care for gingerbread, but a chocolate house sounds yummy.

message 5425: by [deleted user] (new)

The Hershey store had them. I stopped in there when I was downtown.

Our Thanksgiving was nice in that everyone was healthy and it was a nice day together. Dinner...not so much. My mother-in-law has been ill so much lately that my sister-in-law decided to take the pressure off and have it catered. Otherwise my MIL would have insisted on cooking. The problem? She didn't order anything traditional. The kids didn't like the food. Luckily we brought our own desserts, which were great.
But, to be honest we were just happy that nobody was in the hospital finally and that my nephew was home from college.

message 5426: by [deleted user] (new)

I'm glad that everyone was healthy! What kind of food did she order? I know you can order the traditional meal, so why mess with a good thing? ;)

message 5427: by [deleted user] (last edited Nov 29, 2010 09:24AM) (new)

Sh ordered these turkey roll things that were processed turkey and stuffing mixed together and rolled up and covered in sauce. The kids didn't touch them. There were regular mashed potatoes, and vegetables soaked in sauce (which the kids also didn't touch, and my kids love vegetables) and that was pretty much it. Oh, she also asked us each to pay for ourselves, which would have been okay if anyone ate anything.

My guess is that it was a cheaper way to order. She is...errr...stingy is the nicest way to put it.

message 5428: by Lisa (new)

Lisa Vegan (lisavegan) Christine, Oh, tacky. And wouldn't a pot luck have been better, even if more work for more people? At least the food would have been edible.

I would agree with Lisa and say that this is both stingy and tacky. I cannot imagine inviting family or friends to dinner and then asking the guests to pay for their meals. A potluck would definitely have been better.

Lisa wrote: "Christine, Oh, tacky. And wouldn't a pot luck have been better, even if more work for more people? At least the food would have been edible."

I would have been happy to cook some things! I suggested it, as did my other SIL, but we were told over and over that she had it covered. My father-in-law (who is over 80 years old) was very verbal in his disappointment on the food. If I was 80 I would have done the same, haha!

message 5431: by [deleted user] (new)

Wow! Crummy food that you had to pay for? I say you take her off the list for hosting for the next 20 years. It would have been better to go to a restaurant for dinner. What a cheapskate.

message 5432: by Lisa (new)

Lisa Vegan (lisavegan) What a shame. Sorry, but if they "had it covered" you shouldn't have had to pay a cent, and the food being bad so sad, especially for the 80 year old who might not have that many Thanksgivings left. No fun for anyone. I'm sure everyone was disappointed.

Christine, you should have refused to pay, or better yet, asked for a refund because the food was unpalatable (well, if this had happened to me, I probably would not have had the guts to say anything, but it is nice to dream of appropriate and inappropriate responses, isn't it).

message 5434: by [deleted user] (new)

Yes, it's hard to refuse a relative, at their own home. At least grampa got to complain -- loudly! The one benefit of being old. This just means you MIL will "kill herself" over Christmas to make up for this fiasco.

I forgot to tell you....She bought disposable dinnerware to "save the trouble", but then she ended up asking me to wash the disposable plates so that she could save them for next time. I do NOT like to rock the emotional boat of my in-laws, so I did indeed wash the disposable dinnerware. It was ridiculous.

I could tell that my MIL felt bad about the whole thing even though it wasn't her fault in any way. I'll make sure to help her with Christmas.

message 5437: by [deleted user] (new)

I bet that would have made a great family photo: you washing the plastic plates. Your SIL sure has style! :P

Ha! Well at least there is entertainment value for our group members. Ridiculous indeed! ;-)

Have a great day! :)

Kathy (readr4ever) | 1853 comments Gee, I've been away for a week an nobody asks where I am. Sniff, sniff. Oh well, we had a great Thanksgiving dinner, everyone liked my food and decorations. I got to spend the weekend with the granddaughters, which was wonderful. It sounds like you had an interesting dinner, Christine. The last month has been rather stressful, as my husband has been job hunting. He supposedly has an offer, and we're waiting to hear the start date.

Maude | 479 comments Kathy, I just now called the St. Bernard Mountain, Plane and Train Rescue Squad to let them know you are SAFE!! We were very worried!! SOO GLAD you are back!!

message 5450: by [deleted user] (new)

I didn't know you were lost in the "smallish hills" over Thanksgiving weekend, Kathy!! I'm glad Maude kept her head and sent out a search party. :D
