This hunter did not have a gun, he and his wife were just asking, which was good. Some of the other cases I had heard about (which thankfully did not happen to me, I think they happened in New Brunswick or Nova Scotia) had the hunter (armed with a gun, of course) basically "tell" the homeowner that he was going to hunt on the property (are you going to argue with an armed person, although if this had happened to me, I would have notified the police). But, it is true that most of the cases are not problematic, but honestly, if I have no hunting signs on the property, it means no hunting.

Kathy (readr4ever) | 1853 comments There's a lot of muffin talk going on here. I want me some of those muffins. I'm busy trying to get the house in shape for Thanksgiving dinner, which includes Christmas decorating. What amazes me is how you can't just do a simple project, one thing always leads to another. I wanted to take the old draperies down in the living room before putting up the Christmas tree. This led to cleaning the windows and hanging new valances and other cleaning. I have also been going through a lot of old papers and mementos from a big chest in the dining room that I had to empty and move when I had a new floor put down. I feel like I am in perpetual organizing hell right now.

Hang in there, Kathy! Think of the pumpkin pie at the end of the tunnel.

First hunter showed up at my door or my property, and I'd call the police, no hesitation. How rude!

I'm back. Sheesh, it's nutty. The funny thing is these older men who have been sent with a list, and they have no clue what any of it means so they wander around aimlessly. One guy was probably close to tears standing in front of the dairy case because he couldn't find sweetened condensed milk. And yes, I did help him.

Yep, that happened to me this weekend too, Kathy. I just wanted to do a simple project and ended up with rearranged furniture and hours of things to do.

Christine, I'm glad you helped that poor man in the grocery store.

If I give my husband a list for the grocery store, he comes home exhausted! He searches for the first item and then the second etc. instead of going up and down the aisles once and just picking things he needs off the list. He probably walks about 100 miles!

Haha, Shelley! I think I saw your husband there today! Wait, that describes every guy in the store.

Wow, I had no idea that they were that old. I assumed that the one out a couple of years ago was new. 1999? I am surprised that she took so long to get noticed, but I am glad that she did.

message 5362: by [deleted user] (new)

I don't send my husband to the store for more than 2 or 3 items! lol I think he does it on purpose; he does not know his way around the store. When I take him with me, he knocks himself out with impulse buys. Or, he gets fixated on one thing, every shopping trip. I finally got him to stop buying batteries!!

message 5363: by [deleted user] (new)

Good morning! No school here today, and I have conferences with all of the teachers. Hopefully it will go smoothly since things have been better at school lately.

My book is kinda' slow, but I really want to finish it so that I can read a few holiday comfy books.

message 5364: by [deleted user] (new)

Good luck at school, Christine. You should have earned a few good karma points after helping the man in the dairy aisle. :)

I am down to my last two days of prep before heading south for Thanksgiving. I hope to get an early start.

I suspect my husband is inept at the grocery store on purpose, too, Jeannette. Of course, I am purposefully inept on the grill. I would say that evens it out, but the grocery is a lot more constant than grilling.

Okay, before you read my post you must visualize one of those cartoon characters that's really upset and jumping up and down with the smoke coming out of their ears. Got the visual? Okay, read on....

Took my car in for a routine oil change, and it turns out that my tires are bald, and a few other things are wrong to the tune of $1,000. Routine oil change.

message 5369: by [deleted user] (new)

My oil change cost $600. That was last week. I bought $500 worth of tires yesterday. And, new wiper blades! We're ready to roll.......

Joy | 314 comments Winter has arrived in the Seattle area with a vengeance! It's cold with a lot of snow on the ground. There are predicting a bad winter here this year. :-( But the snow does look pretty!

message 5371: by [deleted user] (new)

That is both early and unusual, at least from my limited experience. Enjoy looking at the snow from the house, with a book, and a mug of something warm, Joy.

message 5372: by Lisa (new)

Lisa Vegan (lisavegan) Sorry for those expensive "oil changes" but it's good to be safe. Keeping cars running can be expensive, especially as they get older. I've been lucky so far, but my first major service is due this next spring.

I'd love about as much snow as Seattle gets. Our last snowfall was literally years ago.

message 5373: by [deleted user] (new)

I had quite a bit of necessary work done, and it drives much better now. The tires were in pretty bad shape, too.

You can have some Iowa snow anytime, Lisa!

I don't want THAT much snow. Just a few week's worth.

The last time (years ago) it snowed here, it was so perfect. The snow stuck to the grass and buses and trees but not to the sidewalk or pavement, so it was safe to walk and drive, and it was gorgeous. I live 3 blocks from Golden Gate Park and it was amazingly beautiful, and it lasted 2 or 3 days. Perfection! But, generally we get no snow. It snows not too far away in the hills and the Sierra is only 4 hours away, and they get snow for much of most winters.

Interesting school conference. There was a tornado warning during the meeting so I ended up in the school basement with all of his teachers for over an hour.

message 5377: by Lisa (new)

Lisa Vegan (lisavegan) Tornados, we can all do without. Interesting meeting.

message 5378: by [deleted user] (new)

Your snow sounds lovely, Lisa. We got way too much last year, seriously!

Christine, how did you manage to announce a tornado warning? I'm surprised -- is it still warm enough where you are for tornadoes. Glad everyone is okay!

Manybooks Christine wrote: "Interesting school conference. There was a tornado warning during the meeting so I ended up in the school basement with all of his teachers for over an hour."

Tornado warnings in November?? But, it was quite warm here as well, rainy and 15 degrees Celsius (that's like 60 degrees Fahrenheit), but thankfully, we had no thunderstorms etc. In Alberta, they seem to have the same weather as in Idaho, Maude, lots of snow and cold (I hope we get snow and cold weather soon, I hate rainy winters).

Joy, I'm in Vancouver, BC. We only had a dusting of snow on the weekend but it's certainly gotten icy, arctic cold up here and the wind is gusting through so quickly. It can almost knock a person off their feet.

It sounds like we have similar weather systems (but, we, thankfully, did not get tornado warnings). I hate this type of weather, you never know what to wear.

By the way, I went to Chapters today to look for some books and now remember why I switched to usually buying books online. They had some sort of country rock music on full blast and when I complained, the salesperson said they keep the music loud so people don't browse around too much (I guess, people used to sit at Chapter's for hours reading books and then not buying them). But, I used to browse books for ages and would generally buy quite a few, well, stupid store policies will only make them loose money (I'm switching back to buying on Amazon, I was trying to shop more at Canadian bookstores, but if these stores make the shopping experience annoying, I say "to heck with them."

message 5383: by Lisa (new)

Lisa Vegan (lisavegan) Gundula, That drives me nuts when bookstores do that. I'm overly sensitive to noise as it is, but when looking at books with the intent of buying or browsing the last thing that's appealing is having music blaring.

message 5384: by Lisa (new)

Lisa Vegan (lisavegan) I'm very lucky to have many quiet independent bookstores near me.

Both my boyfriend and I are really noise sensitive, but we love shopping for books. Chapters has really gone downhill, and the music quality is just atrocious. Also, there was a little girl at the store who had on these shoes that squeaked and quacked loudly with every step she took (why would people buy clothing that makes noise and why would retailers sell this).

Being noise sensitive is a real problem at times, and most people just don't get it. It is not just a matter of tuning the noise out, but many people don't take this seriously or think one should just be able to "deal with it."

message 5386: by Joy (new)

Yep. I've always lived in apartments, usually with noisy neighbors and no sound insulation. AND, I can't read (or sleep) unless it's quiet. A real problem.

Central Iowa was drizzly, in the upper 30's/low 40's, but now it is cold and windy. Still, I never expect snow here until December.

Gundula wrote: They had some sort of country rock music on full blast and when I complained, the salesperson said they keep the music loud so people don't browse around too much"

That's ridiculous. That is really the only reason that I go to bookstores...to browse endlessly before buying. Online is almost always cheaper so I am surprised that they would try to stop people from browsing.

Very ridiculous. One of the reasons I wanted to browse was because I've missed doing this and I've recently bought a few books online that were not my cup of tea, but too much noise is simply annoying.

message 5391: by [deleted user] (new)

I noticed loud music the last time that I went to Borders now that you mention it. Hmmmm....

message 5392: by Manybooks (new)

Manybooks Christine wrote: "I noticed loud music the last time that I went to Borders now that you mention it. Hmmmm...."

Well, at least this salesperson admitted that the music was deliberately loud and that they have stopped playing classical music. Ever since Chapters and Indigo merged, things have begun to deteriorate (I really cannot stand Heather Reisman, the president, she has also taken it upon herself to not carry some books she personally finds offensive)

Kathy (readr4ever) | 1853 comments We had a taste of the wild wind weather yesterday and last night. The wind was high all day, and a thunderstorm blitzed through last night, but I actually enjoy going to sleep with the storm raging around me. Go figure. Other than that, the weather has been really nice, temperature-wise.

I'm freaking out a little over Thanksgiving dinner, not so much the dinner but getting the house ready for company. I think I'm going to have to admit that I can't get everything done that I want to. My husband has been in the middle of changing jobs, and my mother-in-law had her surgery and recuperating, so it seems there's been a lot of extra stuff to do lately. And, I'm babysitting my youngest granddaughter tomorrow, so I might as well accept that my house is going to be what it is. I am going to try and be satisfied with the dining room, living room, kitchen, main bath being the rooms in order and decorated. And, of course, if I get off of here, I will get more done. LOL!

message 5394: by [deleted user] (new)

Good luck, Kathy! I'm sure your house will look lovely, so don't kill yourself or stress out. Just have some good food and people won't notice a few dust bunnies! :)

message 5395: by [deleted user] (new)

Kathy,
I understand being stressed about the house, but I agree with Jeannette that people won't notice. I'm sure it's fine as it is.
I've been trying to clean because my mother-in-law is staying with us over the weekend (she'll come back from Thanksgiving at my SIL's with us), and I don't think I'll get what I want done either. Tomorrow I have to bake so today is it....and I'm on the computer, haha!

message 5396: by [deleted user] (new)

Have a great Turkey Day, both of you! :)

Joy | 314 comments Not only did it snow yesterday but we lost power just as I was going to cook dinner around 7:00 pm. We ended up reading by candlelight until it was time to go to bed. No fun!

message 5398: by [deleted user] (new)

It would be romantic if you weren't cold and hungry. I hope it gets better soon, Joy!

message 5399: by Petra (new)

Petra Oooh....that's not fun, Joy. We're lucky in that we've got a gas stove and can cook during power outages. At least we get tea, coffee and soup to keep warm.
Glad that you're power is back up today.

message 5400: by Joy (new)

Joy | 314 comments We had a power loss last year and we didn't get it back for 36 hours! That was the worst. I guess it would be nice to have a generator. We aren't supposed to have this kind of weather in the Seattle area!
