Maude | 479 comments Hi Christine! I lived at 4244 N. Kenmore Avenue. We were close to Lake Michigan. This was not an upscale address at that time. Kenmore Avenue is also known as the area where little Suzanne Degnan was taken from her home, killed, cut up and thrown into a sewer. This occurred on January 7, 1946 just after midnight. That same night, earlier in the evening, my mother came in the bedroom and saw a man looking in the window at me (asleep). Although Suzanne was older than me, we were both blonde children and my mother always thought that that was William Heirens, who was arrested for the murder of Suzanne. It now turns out that Heirens was innocent and was railroaded by the Chicago police. He is 83 years old and they still won't let him out of jail. If you are at all interested in true crime, you should read Most Evil by Steve Hodel. It was his own father who killed Suzanne and MANY more throughout the years. He was also the killer of the Black Dahlia. This may sound untrue but if you read Black Dahlia Avenger, and Most Evil, you will be convinced. And understand that Steve Hodel was a LAPD Homicide detective for years. If you are not interested in true crime, don't read it. It is not pretty.

Kathy (readr4ever) | 1853 comments I've been rather busy and just noticed this morning that I haven't been getting any feeds from goodreads for a few days at least. I'm double checking my settings and will probably check at goodreads feedback to see if anyone else is experiencing this lack of feeds. I don't guess anyone here is, are you?

Oh, Lee, I am on the other side of the vomit-on-the-library-book experience. When my granddaughter threw up the other night, she got one of my library books but good. I tried cleaning it off, but it is too saturated. I don't plan on trying to return it, but I am going to tell the library what happened and pay for it, like I know I should. I can't imagine returning a book in such a condition for others to have to check out and handle.

Maude, what an unusually interesting childhood!

Brenda | 286 comments Lee, so glad things went your way. I bet you'll be checking each book before you check it out. I know it will make me take a look as well.

Kathy (readr4ever) | 1853 comments I had forgotten that I had experienced the email freezeout before. I had to go to "my account" and click on verifying my email address because it had been marked as "bounced." This action should correct the absence of email notifications and start the flow up again. Just in case anyone else has this happen, I thought you all might appreciate this information.

Wow! Amazing, and very scary!

I did the bathrooms, two loads of laundry, and dusting. I'm taking a small break before I mop the wood floors (they still have bits of pumpkins guts on them).

message 5208: by [deleted user] (new)

This is ridiculous. I have been hearing this horrible sound all morning, and I thought one of my appliances was acting up or needed a check-up. I've been testing things out, listening to the walls for issues with the pipes, running water and checking for leaks. I just figured out it's my cat...she is in the vent, and she is snoring. She has gone into the vents before but never fell asleep and projected her snoring everywhere. Sheesh.

message 5209: by [deleted user] (new)

Funny! All my animals are lying in the sunny spots by the south-facing windows.

message 5210: by Maude (new)

Maude | 479 comments Yes, it was Kathy, We came to California the next year and because my mother always had to sleep with the window open and the shade up, I saw many peeping toms over the years, all of whom disappeared when I told my mother, who either never believed me or was trying not to scare me (too late!!). My mother was attacked, knocked down and her purse stolen one night. Another time when she felt a breeze while taking a bath and stood up to close the window someone grabbed her breast. He couldn't hold on, however, as she was too soapy! We moved a lot because every time they raised the rent, we moved.I lived in Hollywood for awhile very close to where Steve Hodel's father killed the Black Dahlia. He was truly a monster. He died without ever being charged with any of the murders which occurred all over the world.

Kathy, it seems so odd that just after a vomit-on-the-library-book story, there is another one!! And I never heard of one before! Will the librarians have to put signs in the book - DO NOT THROW UP ON THIS BOOK!? Just kidding and I hope your granddaughter is feeling better?

message 5211: by [deleted user] (new)

Wow, Maude! You could write a book. How awful, but your mom must have been pretty tough!

I try not to think about where my library books have been. :(

Dixie the dog just blogged about the morning, and we included a picture of Maxie the cat being disrespectful.

I may take a short break from goodreads for a few days. I think I'm mentally drained and not coming across well at the moment. Hopefully I will get some reading done and have something to report soon.

Christine, I should do the same thing, I swear that Goodreads sometimes gets in the way of my reading, but then again, I've found tonnes of great books and some wonderful friends.

Your cat story made me laugh until tears came, thanks for brightening my day.

Thanks Gundula, that cheers me up to know I made you laugh.

Kinda like canned corn? I feel that way some days. I'm gonna hit the treadmill. I know it will make me feel better.

My brother just had heart surgery today to repair a valve & they say he came through fine! :)

I am glad I was alone at the time, I really went giggly, I needed it, though. Cats do do the craziest things. One of my mother's cats will drink out of your water glass if you leave it on the night table and loves sleeping on your head (oh, and if the bedroom door is closed he will jump against it until you've had enough noise and open it).

Kathy (readr4ever) | 1853 comments Christine, your cat is so entertaining, as are you! I hope you don't take too long a break. You will be missed too much. Maude, you really do need to write a book. Who would think that a soapy boob would foil a crime? Jeannette, after Christine's story and my experience, I might think very carefully about where my library books have been. LOL! Seriously, I think I will be checking mine fairly closely from now on, especially since apparently some people aren't willing to pay for a book they've ruined (such as I feel obligated to do).

I was pretty amazed and outraged at Lee's story. I mean, stuff happens (just like it did with your granddaughter, but if it does, one should at least mention it when returning the book to the library). On the other hand, if a situation like this happened to people who use the library because they really cannot afford to purchase books, I could (to a certain extent) understand why they might be hesitant owning up to it (books often are not cheap, and a fine of something like $20.00 could be problematic for some families). However, I think some of the time, people will unfortunately simply try to see what they can get away with, or think no one will notice.

Shelley wrote: "Jeannette, glad to hear your brother came through his surgery so well! That must be a relief."

Thanks! He came through the surgery well. Turns out the whole in his heart, and the heart itself was really large! It's amazing what surgeons can do.

The really weird thing is: none of his siblings knew about the actual date of the surgery until I saw his step-daughter's post on Facebook! My brother had surgery yesterday and her ex-FIL has surgery today. She must be a bit stressed out!

message 5225: by Kathy (new)

Kathy (readr4ever) | 1853 comments Jeannette, I'm glad your brother is doing well. It is indeed amazing what surgeons can do these days. I'm still marveling over my friend's knee replacement. I know it's nothing new, but I just am in awe that they can give you a new knee.

message 5226: by [deleted user] (new)

It is really amazing to think that they can open you up and repair your heart as it beats. My SIL was glad they did not have to put him on the heart and lung machine, which does all the work in place of the heart. That's amazing, too.

Wow Maude, these posts on Steve Hodel's murders and what happened to your mom proves that real life is more interesting than fiction. I hope you don't sleep with the windows open ;-)

Susanna - Censored by GoodReads (susannag) | 529 comments Our cat doesn't hurl herself at the closed bedroom door (our previous one did); she sits outside it, meowing. I think she's usually saying "This door is shut! (shocked) I demand that it be opened! (indignant royalty)"

Hmm, don't have cupcakes on hand. Do have homemade apple crisp with heavy cream, though!

Me neither!! The last time I had filling put in at the dentist, the dentist and the assistant were talking about some TV show (I think it was 24, which I have refused to watch) and how prisoners were being tortured. It's bad enough to have someone drilling in your mouth, but to hear a scene by scene description of torture really took the cake (and, I couldn't really say anything, because my mouth was frozen and I I had a drill in there as well). I did tell them afterwards, but I don't think they took me seriously (geesh, I hope they don't engage in the same kinds of conversations when they fixing children's teeth).

Maude | 479 comments Pamela, Generally NO. Occasionally, in the summer when it is hot, I do and put a glass or something on the sill so when someone tries to come in I hear them, and yell JAMES GET THE SHOTGUN. THERE'S A BURGLAR!! p.s. I don't know any James and I am scared of guns.

OH! You went to see the New Karate Kid? How was Jaden Smith in that film? I heard that the film did really great in box office! I also heard that How to Train Your Dragon was a really great movie! I'll have to see those movies sometime!

message 5250: by [deleted user] (new)

They both just came out on dvd. Karate Kid was a bit long (2-1/2 hours), but it was pretty good, for that type of movie. I mean, you expect the ending to be what it is. :) The movie was filmed in China. And, I love Jackie Chan!
