Oh my goodness, thanks for reminding me! We have a pumpkin to carve as well. I better get on that.

I'm a landed immigrant. I probably should get my Canadian citizenship because I really do not feel German anymore, but I don't want to give up my EC passport, with it I can live and work anywhere that is part of the EC, like Great Britain, Ireland, Spain etc. And, Germany does not allow dual citizenship (yet). I mean, I do not feel German anymore, but I like the idea of having the opportunity and ability to live and work in much of Western (and now even Eastern) Europe. And, the only thing I cannot do in Canada is vote (and that is not too much of a problem, politicians drive me crazy anyway).

Do you roast the seeds? I used to love doing that, but I have not tried to lobotomise a pumpkin (great choice of words, Jeannette) for a long, long time.

Yes, last year we roasted the seeds and I will probably do so again this year. They're yummy!

I'd love to have an EC passport too. That's too bad Germany doesn't allow dual citizenship.

message 5105: by [deleted user] (new)

Gundula, Germany amended their Constitution at least 5 years ago to allow for dual-citizenship, at least with the US. That is when my husband applied for US citizenship. I would assume this applies to Canada, but maybe it is Canada that won't allow dual citizenship?

The important thing from the German side, was to first get German permission (Genehmigung) and then to apply for the new citizenship. If you apply for a second citizenship without permission, they will revoke your German citizenship (or so they threaten). My daughter is now automatically a dual-citizen.

message 5106: by [deleted user] (new)

I used to roast the seeds, but I got lazy in the last few years. The lobotomies went well. I will post a picture when I get a good one. My husband's pumpkin is French Revolution-themed!

message 5107: by [deleted user] (new)

Here is a link to the German Consulate in Toronto, Gundula. You can indeed apply for Canadian citizenship, but first you must apply for and receive permission from Germany (Beibehaltunsgenehmigung). Then you will have 2 passports and be able to vote in Canada. You also won't have to get a work permit any more to work in Canada.

Thank you, Maude! That is so nice of you to say. I'm always happy when I can help someone. :) You just made my evening!

That would be nice. I'll see about checking that out. Thanks for the information.

Do you know if permission usually granted? I should also mention this to my father. He became a Canadian and my mother stayed German, but because they are in Germany so much of the time now (grandkids are all in Europe), it might be easier for him to have both, or for my mother to get a Canadian citizenship as well. I'm actually waiting for my "immigration card" in the mail (you have to renew your maple leaf card every five years), but I've been told my new one is in the mail for ages now. Without it, I really cannot travel outside of the country, they'll let me out, but I'm not sure if they'll let me back in, so it's better not to try.

message 5111: by [deleted user] (new)

You're welcome. It's nice to have the option, and we have been through it if you have any questions.

I also completely forgot. Our pumpkins are blank faced and naked, poor babies.

P.S. Dixie is going to have a fit...she is scared to death of pumpkins.

Just kidding, Miss Jeannette. You know I have hearts in my eyes for you.

Kathy (readr4ever) | 1853 comments I, too, will be so happy to have election day behind us because of all the ads. I've rather lucky in that I've only received one automated phone call thus far, don't know how I escaped those. I don't think the "no call" list cover those for some reason. I know it doesn't cover certain organizations that call me wanting donations either.

Jeannette, I hope the lobotomies go well. LOL! I'm going to make chili later today. The weather has turned cooler here, so it's time for those "comforting" dishes.

I already went to vote this week, and I can't wait for it to go away now. The lawn signs are nuts out here.

message 5122: by Manybooks (new)

Manybooks I am starting a Pumpkin Liberation Front. I don't think they really like to be lobotomised (at least not by me, I am dangerous with a knife).

Christine, tell Dixie that pumpkins cannot move, so she has the upper hand (our family's Rottweiler, when we were young, was originally afraid of pumpkins as well, until he realised that no matter how much he barked and growled at them, they never moved, they never could get him).

message 5123: by [deleted user] (new)

I scared my cat yesterday when I put on my new down coat. It is mid-thigh length, white, with a fake fur trimmed hood. He actually ran away from me, and hid under the table with big eyes! The other cat and the dog just sniffed, but it took some convincing to get the black cat to come to me. Then, after he was really sure, he did that little cat head-bump thing, to say "Oh, it's you." What a goofball.

I will post my pumpkin pictures later. I think you will find my husband's handiwork amusing.

Susanna - Censored by GoodReads (susannag) | 529 comments At this point, I wouldn't vote for Wendy Nanney, whoever she is, for state house, just given how many annoying ads she's sent us in the mail.

Two yesterday, another one today, several more before that.

We have gotten several robo calls as well, but we hang up on them as soon as we hear "Hi, I'm Newt Gingrich..." Click.

They are not affected by the do not call program, as political speech is protected by the constitution. The politicans, the charities, and the phone companies are all allowed to call.

message 5126: by [deleted user] (new)

And they certainly all do call! :(

Susanna - Censored by GoodReads (susannag) | 529 comments Yep.

It's still not anywhere as bad as it was before the no-call list, though!

message 5128: by [deleted user] (new)

I let my answering machine pick up all of my calls. I get a lot of hang-ups that way.

message 5129: by [deleted user] (new)

It's probably really Newt Gingrich and he wants something completely unrelated to the elections, haha!

You have an actual answering machine? Errrr....do you use a VCR too? Is your cell phone the size of a cereal box?

message 5131: by [deleted user] (new)

I have a land line! Cell phones damage your brain, as is proven by the fact that your are unable to maintain your balance on a chair. :P

I actually sometimes miss answering machines. My Bell Voicemail can drive you batty, especially if you have a bunch of saved mail that needs to be removed, or that they claim needs to be removed (each takes about five minutes, and if you have five or so, it can hold up your land line for ages, and the droning voice drives me crazy).

Manybooks Susanna wrote: "Yep.

I think it was handled a lot better in the USA than in Canada. We had to register for the do-not-call list online (which is why I did not do it), and it seems that some unscrupulous telemarketers got hold of the names on the list (thus, some people have actually been getting more calls instead of less). Also, the CRTC has been quite slow charging violators, and to date, have hardly collected any of the fines that they did charge. As it is, I'm kind of glad I waited, I don't get too many telemarketing calls, and I would hate to sign up for a do-not-call-list and end up with more calls because somehow my information was passed on.

Susanna - Censored by GoodReads (susannag) | 529 comments A land line? Not only do we have a land line rather than a cell phone, we have a rotary phone!

And it lives on a telephone niche in the hall, built-in when the house was built in the 1930s.

We also have an answering machine. Me. (Well, we have a mechanical one, but mostly it's me.)

Yes, we're antediluvian.

message 5137: by [deleted user] (new)

A rotary phone with its own little niche in the wall! You must have a lovely home, Susanna. They don't make them like that anymore.

Iowa is looking good, and many of the mighty have fallen, so we'll see about this game, Christine!

Halloween is over for us, or will be when I get the last bit of Butterfinger off my teeth. lol My daughter & 3 friends had a sleepover, complete with an anime marathon. They're in the room watching and giggling right now. :)

We just got rid of our rotary phone last year. I rather have a fondess for them, as I remember the old black model that sat on the telephone stand when I was growing up. I inherited the telephone stand, a truly sentimental piece.

30-0 at the half. Don't hurt yourself with all that jumping around and cheering, Christine! lol

The real question is who paid to have that game fixed, and why? I suspect something sinister. Yeah, that's what happened.

Christine wrote: "Wait...I can't hear you with this paper bag on my head."

Lookin' good, Christine!

I hate to say it, but we didn't see the Spartans score. I think I dosed for a bit. The first half was amaizing!

Susanna - Censored by GoodReads (susannag) | 529 comments I think Sports Illustrated said that in recent years, Kinnick Stadium was where the Big Ten's unbeaten records went to die.

message 5150: by [deleted user] (new)

It looks like the Spartans are 0-7 at Kinnick Stadium. I think their last win there was 1989, if I'm remembering correctly from yesterday's game. Nothing went their way yesterday!

How long did you live in Iowa, Susanna? Or were you just born here?
