Lisa Vegan (lisavegan) Yes, they could put him/her in a place better suited for them too. I can't imagine that your small pond and yard is an ideal environment for whoever this is. But, I'd forgotten your cat goes out and if you want you & your daughter & husband to grow veggies and otherwise use the yard, you probably don't want a permanent resident.

Manybooks Well, you do have to be careful about the municipal animal control people. My boyfriend had an injured raccoon in his shed, and when we called animal control, they came and killed it, that supposedly is their policy with most wildlife, unless it is endangered.

So, last year, when I had squirrels and raccoons in my attic, I called a local company (I think they might have been called Humane Wildlife Removal), and they safely removed the squirrels and animal proofed the attic (much better than just culling them).

message 5003: by [deleted user] (new)

We have an animal rescue clinic associated with the vet hospital at the university. They take in injured wildlife. DNR (Dept of Natural Resources) will help relocate animals, too. Your municipal animal control doesn't seem very nice, so I don't blame you for calling someone else. Maybe Lee can find a similar company near her.

Well, she is in my general area now, so I'm sure she can find a company, maybe even the same one or one like it.

Brenda | 286 comments I have a hugh snapping turtle that decided to hibernate in my backyard. At first it was kinda scaring but now I don't know where it went.

message 5006: by [deleted user] (new)

Oh, cr*p, I would not want a snapping turtle in my yard! Those things look and act evil, don't they? I hope he went somewhere else.

You should check that this turtle is not hiding somewhere, like in your basement or underneath some newspapers etc.

Hey guys, I'm almost 100% sure it's a muskrat. It certainly doesn't have a beaver tail. I did a little reading online and apparently they eat mainly pond vegetation. He/she hasn't touched any of the small trees or shrubs by the pond. There is a sweet little Japanese maple right there and it is intact so I'm not too worried about the plants. He seems pretty shy because when I went out to have a look he dove under the water. I'm not sure what we'll do yet. I certainly don't want animal control to come and kill him. I may look into Gundula's solution.

message 5009: by Lisa (new)

Lisa Vegan (lisavegan) I'm glad Gundula knows of people who would find the muskrat a good home. (Now, that darn song is going through my mind and I've never liked it.)

Animal control here will relocate animals but maybe not 100% of the time.

I just wanted to warn you, we were rather shocked that they simply killed the raccoon. Now, the raccoon was injured, but animal control did say that it was their policy to not relocate raccoons because they are not endangered. What I liked about the company I called was that they explained everything and also made sure to be as unobtrusive as possible. For the squirrels, they waited until they were sure that their babies no longer needed constant care and were able to be safely relocated (sometimes, people will relocate an animal without taking into consideration that it might have a nest or den with little ones nearby). Even if you don't want to relocate this animal, I would consider calling one of the local wildlife companies (or maybe the Niagara Escarpment Conservation people or Environment Hamilton, which is a local environmental group) and asking for some information.

Nibblin' on bacon, chewin' on cheese..... (awful lyrics).

I am glad that there are companies near you, Lee, that will help you find the little guy a more suitable home. I can't imagine where he will over-winter.

That is all.

message 5013: by [deleted user] (new)

Lisa started it! :P

Hard to believe, but this was my sister & her fiance's song. They've been married 33 years. No accounting for taste.

message 5014: by Brenda (new)

Brenda | 286 comments We don't have a basement but I think it is under the shed at least last time I saw it. Surprisingly they move pretty fast. Apparently they like to burrow down into the ground as I have seen a few holes. Can't imagine how he got in the yard. I think I would rather have the squirrels or the bunnies then a turtle.

message 5015: by [deleted user] (new)

I definitely agree with you on this one. Good luck!

That's okay. I own their Greatest Hits on cassette tape. They did pen some catchy tunes....

This doesn't make you sound old and unhip at all.

message 5020: by Lisa (new)

Lisa Vegan (lisavegan) I actually like them okay but I hate the muskrat song. And I don't own any of their music.

message 5021: by [deleted user] (new)

Hey, I told one of the choir kids (he's 13) "That's hip!" And he asked, "Gee, Mrs. J., is that something they said when you were young?" Sarcastic little brat! ;0)

message 5022: by [deleted user] (new)

And Lisa, if you did I am sure that you wouldn't own a cassette tape.

message 5023: by [deleted user] (new)

Would she own the 8-track instead?

Ha! I'd probably own the record album.

I have about 200 of those and I love them, but seem to listen to just my iPod or CDs. *sigh*

message 5028: by [deleted user] (new)

The iPod is great. My daughter has started playing music on Pandora, which is a really interesting way to find new music.

message 5029: by Lisa (new)

Lisa Vegan (lisavegan) I have Pandora set up with a bunch of stations and it's on my bookmarks bar, but I still always forget to use it.

message 5030: by [deleted user] (new)

You need to have a teen in your house. I can't keep up with what she is listening to from day-to-day.

message 5031: by Manybooks (new)

Manybooks Jeannette wrote: "Would she own the 8-track instead?"

8-track tapes, oh wow!! The first car we had when we moved to Canada had an 8-track tape recorder, and I think we had two tapes, one of them was some German choir, and the other was Kenny Rogers (shivering).

Actually, a friend of mine at the University of Waterloo used to place 8-track tapes on the dashboard of his Honda Civic because he thought that if people thought that he had an 8-track tape recorder, they would not try to break into his car (I guess it worked, he never had a break-in and at the time, Honda Civics were considered prime break-in material in Waterloo, but I still remain skeptical).

message 5032: by [deleted user] (new)

Great post, Gundula! I can't decide which story is funnier: you admitting to owning anything by Kenny Rogers, or your friend's theft deterrent strategy! :D

Well, the Kenny Rogers tape belonged to my parents, same with the tape of "Die Fischer Chöre." I am ashamed to admit that I had a tape by Burton Cummings and one by Prism (anyone remember Spaceship Superstar).

Morning everyone! We've got rain and gusty winds today, so I think I'll be staying inside. Except for my Tuesday library run, that is. I'm between books, so I'm hoping my holds will come in.

Have a great day! :)

message 5035: by [deleted user] (new)

Manybooks Jeannette wrote: "Wow, Gundula! I checked out Prism on iTunes and I am not surprised that I do no remember them! :p"

I cannot believe I actually used to listen to this, but hey, I was also really into ABBA for a while. Most of the popular music I listen to now is either from the 50s and 60s (so kind of before my time, or before I could remember much, I was born in 1966), and from the 80s (high school and undergrad for me). I know very little about pop music post 1989, I just lost interest and cannot stand rap.

message 5037: by [deleted user] (new)

I listen to quite a bit of current pop, because I have a teenager at home. She (and her dad) are always coming up with new songs to listen to!

It was crazy windy/rainy here during the night through the morning. Of course the tornado sirens went off as I am driving Emma to school so she freaked out. I had to bring all of my scarecrows and monster stuff in. :(

Today I am cleaning, making a big pot of soup, and hopefully reading a bit.

Me too. High school kids have a way of doing that to you. Of course, I love bands like Train and Maroon 5.

message 5040: by [deleted user] (new)

I LOVE Train! Do you have "Save Me San Francisco"?? I got it for my birthday and it is so rare to get a CD where I love all of the songs, but one.

We have "She Will Be Loved" by Maroon 5, but I'll check out more of their songs. Here's a video for you:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BJk6gZ...

My suggestion: Less shots of the band and more of the cute Asian guy!!

message 5041: by [deleted user] (new)

Jeannette, I love that Finger Eleven song! I have watched that youtube many times. I don't have the entire Train CD, I've been downloading songs one by one. I'll have to look into that.

message 5042: by [deleted user] (new)

There is one song that I don't care for on the album. I'll check to see which one it is and try to find the video. I also own "My Private Nation" and 7 tracks from 3 other cds. I guess I'm a fan, eh? I love the guy's voice and the crazy rhyming lyrics.

You sound like me, Gundula. Though I also like many historic styles of music, especially jazz before 1950 and "early music."

ETA: Mamma Mia is one of the silliest, possibly the silliest movie, I have ever seen. I howled with laughter throughout. Especially at the end credits.
