I think my daughter has the attitude of "they will tell us why, sooner or later," that I can't deal with myself. I also think that there are some typos, which my daughter just doesn't bother to point out to the teacher. I mean, I can do the exercise as it stands, but I think somebody should make it right. She has been doing online language for 3+ years now, and she says that all of these courses were like this. I guess none of the students "complain" like I do.

Good morning everyone!
I am officially an old lady mess. Something made a ripping sensation in my knee last night as I climbed the stairs, and now that is really hurting. Plus I woke up with a stiff neck. I feel like I'm 142 instead of 42...sheesh.

And get this....this morning I see a notice that all of my library holds came in at once. Dagnammit. I'm going to have to pick and choose or else lock myself in a closet to read undisturbed for two weeks. I think the closet thing sounds good except that my knee and my neck may not like sitting in the back of the closet. It's a pickle.

Have a good start!

message 4953: by [deleted user] (new)

Good morning, Granny! Sorry about your knee -- ouch!

Bummer about your holds. They either linger for weeks or they all come in the same day. Maybe half of them will be stinkers? :P

Have a fun day everybody! Welcome back, Maude! :)

message 4954: by [deleted user] (new)

I am a bit overwhelmed too at the moment with my holds coming in at the same time. Feels a bit like Christmas.

My husband is going away on a business trip tomorrow, so I'll have lots of time to read. Don't tell him, but I'm secretly thrilled. He doesnt' travel very often..

message 4955: by [deleted user] (new)

Haha, Shelley! Can I come over and read with you?

Christine, take some time for yourself this weekend, have a relaxing bath and put some tiger balm (or something similar) on your knee (an ice pack might be good as well, I know heat packs are more relaxing, but if you've actually injured the knee, ice supposedly is better). But, if your knee is still hurting by Monday, you should get it checked out.

My library materials always seem to come at the same time as well, but I think most of that is my own fault, as I tend to request loads of books at once.

One day, though, you will go too far, ha, ha, ha. And, canes can be surprisingly good weapons (instead of canning, you will perhaps receive a caning, ouch).

Oh, by the way, I watched a really interesting DVD series recently called "The Adventure of English" (basically, a history of the English language, a bit basic, a bit too Anglo-centric, but quite worth it and very interesting). I just remembered, because in the DVD, the narrator states that the word "ouch" came into American English from German (autsch).

I second that, especially since you said there was a ripping sound, that does not sound good, especially in the knee area.

Susanna - Censored by GoodReads (susannag) | 529 comments Yeah, I took Latin again fairly recently for the first time since high school, and could not believe the difference in approach!

I will say it was good for retaining vocabulary. And I had already had the grammar-heavy approach, so I didn't have as much trouble with that as part of the class.

Yeah, I am a little concerned because it hurts like heck. I'll give it the weekend. Emma has all kinds of knee icing gadgets that I can use for now.

I did get a bit carried away. I think I'm only picking up some of them.

Susanna - Censored by GoodReads (susannag) | 529 comments Ice it like mad; that's what I did after I fell on my elbow. (Still have a touch of tendonitis; but icing helped dramatically.)

I would love to take Latin. We had one year of Latin in high school, which I loved (and which I was really good at, it certainly helped balance out my horrible math and PE marks). And, then, when I wanted to take Latin in grade ten, it was suddenly no longer available; the school had replaced it with modern jazz dancing (at the request of the PE teacher). I really hated modern jazz dance, just another class to show that I was klutzy and ungraceful (and another class with bad marks).

Susanna - Censored by GoodReads (susannag) | 529 comments Latin helped a lot with both my English and French grammar (French grammar makes more sense to me from the perspective of Latin grammar than from English). My problem with Latin (as with French) was retaining vocabulary, so the recent course helped a lot there with its focus.

I understand that, I was lucky that we had pretty good grammar instruction in both English and French at school. I remember one of my first year German students who had had Latin all through high school being incredibly bored because I had to do so much remedial grammar when teaching beginning German, but it couldn't be helped (most of the students did not know things like the difference between subjects and direct objects and you would be up the creek in German because the forms change depending on the grammatical cases).

Kathy (readr4ever) | 1853 comments Hello everyone! I've been absent the last week, lots going on. It looks like my husband might be coming home for a bit, not completely sure yet, and we are dealing with that. I might not be too communicative the next week either, but I will check back in as soon as I can. Oh, and my Internet connection has been very spotty this last week, too. Had a great time at Boo at the Zoo, will try to post some pics to profile. Christine, take care of your knee, dear. I'm going to see my son this afternoon, which is always a good thing.

What have you got that poor dog dressed up as? Is she a flower or a banana?

She's a banana. That was last year's costume, but still one of my favorite pictures. Of course, she is still holding a grudge.

LOL! The darn pictures are so small that I can't tell anything about them until I click and enlarge. How hilarious, but I wouldn't have blamed Dixie if she peed on your carpet for the humiliation she must have suffered.

I woke up today and my husband tells me we have a beaver living in the wee pond in our new backyard. I said there is no way we have a beaver back there! I took a look and there was a furry brown creature swimming around. I'm pretty sure it's a full grown muskrat! We have a fully fenced yard in the middle of the city. I have no idea where this creature came from but I think it's been there for a while. No one was living in the house for almost a year before we bought it.

message 4993: by Lisa (new)

Lisa Vegan (lisavegan) Lee, Are you nearby to any parks, lakes?? I live 3 blocks from Golden Gate Park and my all residential block has skunks, raccoons, squirrels, all sorts of birds, and occasionally other bigger animals that travel from the park.

message 4994: by Lisa (new)

Lisa Vegan (lisavegan) And, Lee, what are you going to do/what can you do about teh muscrat? I assume it doesn't fit in with your gardening plans. ;-)

message 4995: by Lee, Mod Mama (new)

Lee (leekat) | 3959 comments Mod
Well the city is on Lake Ontario but we don't live that close to the lake. I can't imagine where this guy came from.

And actually Lisa, I'm kind of thrilled to have such a neat creature in the back yard. I'm fascinated with him. I hope he has enough to eat over the winter.

message 4996: by Lisa (new)

Lisa Vegan (lisavegan) Do you know what they eat? If you're happy to have him, maybe you can feed him.

message 4997: by [deleted user] (new)

They probably eat everything! I've seen woodchucks or ground hogs here in Ames, but not in my backyard pond. The pond must be bigger than it appears in the photos.

I wouldn't feed it, because you can't be sure if it will take over the yard and try to keep you away from it's territory. Maybe you can find a naturalist in the area to give you some advice.

Manybooks Lee wrote: "I woke up today and my husband tells me we have a beaver living in the wee pond in our new backyard. I said there is no way we have a beaver back there! I took a look and there was a furry brown ..."

I think that's cool, I've got raccoons and deer (and, I think I heard a bobcat few weeks ago), the raccoons are so cute in the summer when they bring their babies up to the house. Lee, one way to check if it is a beaver, is to maybe see if the tail is long and narrow (usually a muskrat) or flat and wide (beaver); and, if the trees are being felled or chomped, you know it's a beaver. They can "clear-cut" a section of forest rather quickly. I would also try to keep your cat away from it, if it is a beaver, they can be pretty territorial.

message 4999: by Lisa (new)

Lisa Vegan (lisavegan) I will add I wouldn't like it. Not with a young child and a cat. I'd like wild animals, however cute, off my property. A raccoon almost killed my dog once, and she was walking on a leash.

message 5000: by [deleted user] (new)

I feel the same, Lisa. And Lee has a small city lot, where Gundula is next to the woods. I think you should talk to animal control or the park service, Lee, and find out more about this critter, just to be safe.
