Thanks for the welcome Lisa! My favourite Daniel Silva book has to be Moscow Rules. Aside from the fact that I'm a sucker for books that are set in Russia or tie Russia into the plot in some way, it was very fast-paced and I especially loved the dialogue. =)

Lisa Vegan (lisavegan) I actually prefer the British/Canadian way of spelling over the U.S. way. I wonder if I should try to change the way I spell?!
;-)

Thanks Li, and Lee too. I don't know Silva's books. I might have to rectify that.

I actually started changing the way I spelt certain words and adopted (about 99%; I think there's one word that I still spell the other way xD) the British way of spelling things (to keep things uniform; I noticed the Canadian way of spelling things incorporates both ways a lot of the times). Less "z", more "s" in my words now xD

Thanks for the welcome Lee! Awesome that you read Daniel Silva's stuff too =D And yay for Persuasion =)

Valerie Hello, my name is Valerie, and I love getting engrossed in a good book! Most of the time I reach for a comfort read, as reading is my #1 source of entertainment. Right now, I am reading the Alex Delaware series by Jonathan Kellerman. I'm a sucker for mysteries/detective stories!

I also like humorous books when I really just want to laugh and forget the stress of the daily grind...Dave Barry, Mike Royko, Dilbert books, etc.

I sure through this group I will find even more books to love and enjoy!

message 155: by [deleted user] (new)

Hi Li and welcome to the group. I read Lord of the Rings every year and Persuasion is my favorite Austen! Haven't read any of Silva's books -- more for my tbr list!

message 156: by [deleted user] (new)

Hi Valerie! Welcome to the group! I used to read Mike Royko when he was in the papers, but that was quite a few years ago!

message 157: by Gabriele (new)

Gabriele Wills (muskoka) | 178 comments Thanks for the invitation to this wonderful, active group, Lee! I don't know if I can keep up, but will try to participate as much as possible. Great to see so many friends here as well. How do you all manage? Are there extra hours in your day?

My name is Gabriele Wills, and I live near Toronto, Canada. I'm the mother of one child currently working on her Ph.D (which tells you that I'm no longer in my salad days). I am moderator of the "Between the Wars" group, and "Biographies & Memoirs of Other Generations", so if those are of interest to you, please join!

I guess you can tell that I'm very much into historical books, fiction and otherwise. I'm also an author and will post something on that thread. Thank you, Lee, for giving us that opportunity!

A very warm welcome to Gabriele and Valerie! Thanks for joining us. We certainly hope you find some interesting things to read. We have loads of great members and suggestions.

Jo (memosinstilettos) Hi I am Jo, I live just outside Vancouver in British Columbia but I was born and raised on the south coast of England..

I am a second year library tech student but am a bookkeeper by trade. I have a grown daughter (aged 22) and a six month grandaughter, all at the age of 39!

My favourite three books are "The Crimson Petal and the White” by Michael Faber, “Drood” by Dan Simmons (if you love the nineteenth century these are fantastic reads) and “Water for Elephants” by Sara Gruen, a total must (don’t be fooled by the cover!).

i look forward to all your book recommendations!

message 160: by Lisa (new)

Lisa Vegan (lisavegan) Welcome from me too Valerie and Gabriele.

Welcome, Jo!

I hope that you all enjoy this group.

message 161: by Lisa (new)

Lisa Vegan (lisavegan) Valerie,

Re: Dave Barry, Mike Royko, Dilbert books, could you name one of each, particular favorites, so I can add them to the group shelves. Or, feel free to add as many of each as you'd like to the group's shelves.

Here are instructions if you'd like to do it yourself:

Sandy | 24 comments Hi Valerie (Message 156) I'm currently reading a terrific mystery I found on my friend's shelf. Prayer of the Dragon by Eliot Pattison. If you or any other reader has any interest in Tibet, this is a fabulous book. It is really engrossing and compelling and it clearly portrays an extraordinary land and culture. Really cool! Hope your book is great too! I'll check Kellerman's books out sometime... and Dave Barry is a terrific stand by for gut-wrenching humor - especially as so much of what he writes about is Miami and Cuban-Americans and having lived there (miami) for 5 years I can relate to lots of his goofyness first hand! Ciao!

Hi, Joanne! I co-moderator a group called Victorians! and we just read Drood late last year. Would love to have you stop by to add your thoughts, if you're interested!

Sandy, I absolutely ADORE Eliot Pattison's mysteries set in Tibet! I've read the first four and they are all terrific.

Do you know if The Skull Mantra is the first book in the series? Is it a series?

message 168: by Lee, Mod Mama (new)

Lee (leekat) | 3959 comments Mod
I'm pretty sure Skull Mantra is the first book and yes it is a series. You don't have to read them as a series but they make more sense when you have the backstory. I accidentally read the second book first which was Water Touching Stone and still loved it. The books are special, they are not your usual mystery. They're a combination of mystery, suspense, Tibetan culture and Buddhism all mixed up with an ex Chinese Bureaucrat who was sent to a hard labour camp.

message 169: by Lisa (new)

Lisa Vegan (lisavegan) Thanks, Lee. I'm adding Skull Mantra now.

It/they look wonderful! I'd never heard of this series. Thanks everybody!

Hi Paula I checked out your group but could not post a comment (not a member). But as far as Drood goes, I am not sure I liked it or not.

I liked the social history of the relationship between Dickens and Collins and I loved the intrigue of Drood, I just wish the two stories were seperated... The boarder line between fact and fiction was brillant!!

It is one of my favourite three right now because the book is memorable and entices one to read 'Moonstone', 'Our Mutal Friend" and 'The mystry of Edwin Drood'.

message 173: by Carol (new)

Carol (carol827) Hello, My name is Carol. I found this site by accident, but am loving it so far. I love to read, and was just given a Sony Reader for Christmas by my 3 children. Some of my favorite authors are: Anne Rivers Siddons, Patricia Cornwell, Janet Evanovich, Harlan Coben.
"John Chancellor Makes Me Cry" (Anne Rivers Siddons) is a favorite comfort read of mine. Read it if you love cats, as the author does. Also, Janet Evanovich - Stephanie Plum series - ALWAYS makes me laugh; and who can't use a good laugh now and then? Thanks for listening. Happy Reading!!

message 174: by [deleted user] (new)

Welcome to the group Carol! I have added John Chancellor... to my tbr shelf. Always fun to discover a new author!

Lee (leekat) | 3959 comments Mod
Hi Carol, welcome to the group!
I must tell you that I picked up my first Stephanie Plum book around number 8 or 9 (I think) and I could not stop laughing. It was the one where Stephanie's friend and co-worker (can't remember her name) went on the all meat diet and was constantly stuffing her face. What a character!

message 176: by Carol (new)

Carol (carol827) Thank you both Jeannette and Lee for the warmest of welcomes!

Jeanette, I hope you enjoy Anne Rivers Siddons; her books are mostly placed in the South. Outer Banks, and King's Oak are also favorites of mine.

Lee, I think you are referring to her friend "Lula", definitely a character, definitely keeps us laughing.
The Plum series takes place in New Jersey, which is where I live; all the more reason why I find them enjoyable.

message 177: by Lisa (new)

Lisa Vegan (lisavegan) Thanks for posting here Carol. Welcome! I hope you continue to find this group enjoyable.

message 178: by Lisa (new)

Lisa Vegan (lisavegan) Carol, Are there any particular Harlan Coben books that are favorite comfort reads for you?

message 179: by Elisabetta (new)

Elisabetta (lizzyblack) | 2 comments Hello everybody, my name is Liz. I found this group browsing through my freind's group, and I really like it :) My comfort reading... well, chick-lit (the shopaholic series but also many others) is usually a good choice, then I also am fond of "Pride&Prejudice", sometimes it's just nice to read a book you know you like a lot :P Another kind of comfort reading now is Vampires series, I feel like coming back to teenage ;)

message 180: by Lisa (new)

Lisa Vegan (lisavegan) Welcome, Elisabetta! I'm glad that you're enjoying the group. Feel free to post in any of the discussion threads with more of your comfort reads, and I hope this group helps you find even more books.

Yay Chandra! I'm so happy you're here too!
Sarah Waters is one of those authors I've been meaning to get around to. I'm glad to hear she was a recent and wonderful discovery for you.

Carol (carol827) Lisa wrote: "Carol, Are there any particular Harlan Coben books that are favorite comfort reads for you?"

I enjoyed every one of Harlan Coben's books. My favorite would probably be the first in the Myron Bolitar series, "Deal Breaker".

Hi all,
My name is Sea. I recently started an online book club and through searching other book related blogs found this site. Today is actually my first day on this site. I read constantly. Never found without a book. I am trying to connect with other readers and also do some networking for my book club as well. I'm always in search of book recommendations and a good discussion.
