Hi Rayna, welcome to our fabulous group!

message 553: by Kandice (new)

Kandice First off, I love the pop-up about kindness and courtesy! I had no idea you could do that and I mod a few groups. Great job, girls.

I keep seeing updates for this group from my friends and a lot of your conversations look fun. I am a huge comfort reader, although what I consider comfort probably doesn't fit the normal definition of that phrase.;)

I'm especially looking forward into delving into the comfort foods thread.

message 554: by Kandice (new)

Kandice Well, of course it was your and Becky's updates that I saw, so thank you.=)

message 555: by [deleted user] (new)

Hello Kandice! Welcome to the group. We love talking about books and food. :)

Lindsey (_lindsey_) | 25 comments Welcome, Kandice! I absolutely love your profile pic. I've always liked ladybugs.

Welcome to everyone else who's new too!

message 557: by Mona (new)

Mona Garg (k1721m) | 492 comments Hi Kandice! I'm somewhat new here too. I read for comfort and relaxation too. But I don't think most people classify the true crime genre, one of my faves, as "comfort." :)

I usually post when the mood strikes and I have something to contribute. You will find it hard to pull yourself away from GR and these groups sometimes.

My to-read list is exploding because of this site.

message 558: by [deleted user] (new)

Hi Rayna. Welcome!

Hi Kandice. Lots of old friends joining up. Nice to see you here.

message 559: by Kandice (new)

Kandice Oh, I've been on Good Reads for almost 2 years now, and it has made a shambles of my TBR, what I read and especially what I buy. A good shambles, but a shambles none the less!

Thanks, everyone.

message 560: by Mona (new)

Mona Garg (k1721m) | 492 comments Kandice, I usually don't buy books except sometimes second-hand. The library is one of my favorite places and my card gets a LOT of mileage. I use inter-library loan extensively.

Anyway... if you do buy books I just wanted to tell you about a site I mentioned here earlier. It's called BOOKSWIM.COM. It's the NETFLIX of books. Whether it will work for you depends on how much you spend on books and how fast you read.

message 562: by Lisa (new)

Lisa Vegan (lisavegan) Hi Kandice. Welcome to the group! We've got a great group of people here and we hope you enjoy yourself. Oh, and some great books are here for the finding too!

Check out all of the discussion threads, polls, books on bookshelves. Participate as much or as little as you like. Looking forward to getting to know you.

Hi Kandice, welcome to the group! As Jeannette said above we love to chat about books and food. You might be surprised to find what a diverse bunch of genres we find comforting.

message 564: by Allison (new)

Allison (inconceivably) My update page has been flooded with friends posting in this group, so I followed them in here :) looks like fun!

I've been on GR for about two years I think, and I absolutely love being able to keep track of what I've read and pretend like I have a modicum of control over my TBR list :)

I will basically try reading anything, but I normally end up with historical fiction, fantasy and young adult the most. My comfort reads all tend to be romance.

Right now, my comfort pile would probably be something like:
The Truth about Forever and Just Listen by Sarah Dessen
The Sky Is Everywhere by Jandy Nelson
Jewels of the Sun and Tears of the Moon by Nora Roberts

Hi Allison!

Lisa Vegan (lisavegan) Welcome to the group, Allison. Thanks for sharing some of your comfort read books.

Goodreads has sent my to-read shelf out of control in the three years I've been here, but I love it anyway. ;-)

message 567: by Allison (new)

Allison (inconceivably) thanks y'all!

message 568: by Becky (new)

Becky (beckyofthe19and9) Hehe... The gang's all here! (Well, almost. :P)

message 569: by [deleted user] (new)

Hi! My name is Summer. I actually joined the group a while back, but haven't been on GR much lately. I've found myself near the end of a book and have nothing new! (Or nothing new that I want to read right now!) I need a "comfort" read"!

But do I want an old favorite, or something I loved and forgot or something new?? Dilemma! I've had fun reading through others' lists and I'm now feeling nostalgic for my old favorites! Grew up reading Laura Ingalls Wilder, LM Montgomery and Louisa May Alcott. Thinking back to that time, when I was about 10 I think my favorite book was My Side of the Mountain. Just looked it up and it's part of a trilogy! I never knew that, but I must've checked that book out of the library ten times before elementary school was over! Oh, that andCheaper by the Dozen

I would say Little Women has been my most read book ever. I like to read it most years around Christmas, for some reason. LOL! I also love Jane Eyre. I've returned to The Thorn Birds, Katherine by Anya Seton and the Grapes of wrath. More recently I've been reading (or Audible-ing) historical fiction. The Hiding Place is a particular favorite of mine. I've read The Thorn Birds often, too. I'll have to work up a top ten list!

Anyway, hello! Looks like a great group.

message 570: by Lisa (new)

Lisa Vegan (lisavegan) Hi Summer! So glad you joined the group and are posting. Welcome!

Lindsey (_lindsey_) | 25 comments Hi Summer! Hi Allison! So nice to meet you both.

message 572: by Allison (new)

Allison (inconceivably) hi Summer :)

I definitely agree with you on the L.M. Montgomery front. The Anne of Green Gables series are my all time favorites :)

What's the story Wishbone??? Sorry, I couldn't resist! :) Welcome to the group Allison.

message 574: by [deleted user] (new)

Welcome Summer! Have you seen the movie, The Hiding Place? I watched it years ago and remember how moving it was.

Have you listened to Cheaper by the Dozen? It's a great book to read or listen to.

Welcome to the group!

I'm reading The Blue Castle. It's a fun story!

message 576: by Mona (new)

Mona Garg (k1721m) | 492 comments Hi Summer! Welcome! I read a lot of Laura Ingalls Wilder too along with Beverly Cleary,Judy Blume ...

My problem is I have too many choices of what to read next. It depends on my mood and what arrives for me to pick up at the library.

I always look forward to a new month because with a new month comes a new stash of zines with yet more book reviews and more to add to my to-read list.

message 577: by Allison (new)

Allison (inconceivably) I'm so jealous, I want The Blue Castle! I never see it anywhere...I wish someone would reprint it. I'll order it online one of these days.

Hey Allison and Summer, I'm glad you found us! I see you have been warmly welcomed by some of the gang so I'll just say I hope you have fun with us. We are a very friendly group of readers.

Allison wrote: "...I wish someone would reprint it. I'll order it online one of these days."

Ain't it the truth! There are a million people on the wishlist for it at BookMooch too!

message 580: by [deleted user] (new)

Wasn't there an anniversary of some kind for L M Montgomery recently? That would be the best hope for getting a reprint of the book. The library copy I'm reading is from 1988.

message 581: by Lisa (new)

Lisa Vegan (lisavegan) The Blue Castle

Goodreads shows it as 2006, Amazon as 2007, but it is a fairly new edition.

message 582: by [deleted user] (new)

Borders lists the Amazon edition, too, but Borders wants $19 for it. If anyone wants to buy it, I would guess now would be the time. $13 is steep for a $7 paperback book, but who knows if they will print it again.

message 583: by Maude (new)

Maude | 479 comments Allison, I just finished reading a used copy of The Blue Castle and will be glad to send to you. However, I would like it back when you are through but there is no hurry. Let me know.

message 584: by Lisa (new)

Lisa Vegan (lisavegan) I would hope many library systems have it too. It is on my to-read shelf/just bought a copy but it won't come for a long time. I'm happy to lend out mine too, after I've read it.

thanks Maude, I sent you a message :)

message 586: by [deleted user] (new)

I am reading a library copy.

message 587: by Maude (new)

Maude | 479 comments Welcome Summer! I, too, love all your books except I haven't read My Side of the Mountain. I am going to look for that.

message 588: by [deleted user] (new)

Hi everyone! Thanks for the welcome!

Allison, yes I love all the Anne books! Anne of Green Gables was especially worn the last time I saw it, though I don't have copy now.

Jeanette--I didn't know there was a movie! I have a copy of the book that originally belonged to my grandmother. Unlike others, it never gets "pruned" from my shelves. And no, I haven't listened to Cheaper By the Dozen. I will look for that! I love, love audiobooks in the car. I could go on about that for a long time! I'd like to hear suggestions on that front anytime!

Mona--I'm a moody reader, also! I used to think that there were certain books I had to read and would plow through anything to the finish. Can't be bothered now. I'll give something a fair chance, but I'm afraid I've let several things go by the wayside when they didn't hit me just right. I like to use the library also. Sometimes I just wander and see what grabs my attention.

Hi Lisa and Lee!

Maude, I hope I haven't overstated it, and I haven't reread it as an adult, but I thought it was fascinating at the time! It was definitely a childhood comfort book!

Now I need to check out The Blue Castle y'all are talking about!!

message 589: by [deleted user] (new)

Hey, Summer, check out the audiobooks thread. I think there were a lot of good suggestions posted there. I hope you have seen the older film version of Cheaper by the Dozen; the book is much better than the film. They were fascinating people.

message 590: by [deleted user] (new)

I'm sorry, Jeanette, that my message didn't make much sense! I didn't know there was a The Hiding Place movie. And yes, I've seen the older Cheaper by the Dozen-pretty good for a film I couldn't bring myself to watch the more recent one with Steve Martin!

message 591: by [deleted user] (last edited May 28, 2010 07:42PM) (new)

Sorry, I'll copy the part that my reply went to:

I love, love audiobooks in the car. I could go on about that for a long time! I'd like to hear suggestions on that front anytime!

Then I'll post the link for you to follow:

Suggestions for Audiobooks

message 592: by [deleted user] (new)

Now, I hope that makes more sense. I wanted to point you to the Comfort Reads thread about audiobooks. :)

message 593: by [deleted user] (new)

Thanks! I hadn't spotted it yet, but I just visited!

Double-duh on me! I thought you said that my message didn't make much sense! So, I very carefully repeated it for you! *goodness*

Here's a link for The Hiding Place. Those two sisters were amazing women. Corrie ten Boom lived to the age of 91.

message 595: by Lisa (new)

Lisa Vegan (lisavegan) Summer, In addition to the thread, we've got some books on the audiobooks shelf:

http://www.goodreads.com/group/booksh...

I'm sure we've missed some, but all of these have been mentioned in this group as being good via audio/have good narrators/etc.

message 596: by Mona (new)

Mona Garg (k1721m) | 492 comments Summer, CHEAPER BY THE DOZEN with Steve Martin was pretty good but then I didn't see the original movie nor did I read the book. CHEAPER BY THE DOZEN 2 was ok.

message 597: by [deleted user] (new)

Mona wrote: "Summer, CHEAPER BY THE DOZEN with Steve Martin was pretty good but then I didn't see the original movie nor did I read the book. CHEAPER BY THE DOZEN 2 was ok."

Read the book Mona, and then you'll see why I avoided the Steve Martin movie. The book is a true story and is wonderful!

message 598: by Mona (new)

Mona Garg (k1721m) | 492 comments I LOVE the library. I visit at least once a week and, in addition to picking up the family reserves and checking for the latest PEOPLE, mostly wander.

I always check the new books shelf and pull stuff off the shelving carts.

message 599: by Mona (new)

Mona Garg (k1721m) | 492 comments Jeannette, ok I'll add it to my exploding list.

I see what you mean about avoiding the Steve Martin movie. Sometimes when they make movies from books, they really screw up and it taints your warm memory of the book.

The real problem with the Steve Martin movie is the fact that they took the book's title and then stopped there. There is nothing else in the movie that was in the book. I am sure there were quite a few surprised readers who picked the book up after the film came out.
