Aimee (maemaelu) Twilight by Stephanie Meyer

Jo | 3 comments The best teen book I read this fall would be a toss between Erec Rex the Dragon eye for younger teens, and Ender's Game for everyone.

Alexandra I just finished Midnighters #1: The Secret Hour by Scott Westerfeld. I really liked it. I'll be reading the next book in the series.

Tiff (tiffe) | 8 comments I have two:

1. The Breakup Bible by Melissa Kantor

2. Schooled by Gordon Korman

I really enjoyed both of these and highly recommend them!

bjneary | 236 comments 1. True Notebooks by Mark Salzman about a year he spent visiting boys in juvenile prison and how he got them the express themselves through writing- truly awe-inspiring and depressing at once!

message 107: by Kaza (last edited Aug 25, 2016 01:41PM) (new)

Kaza | 5 comments That sounds amazing!
I admit I read teen / YA (and kids!) books myself - because I enjoy them, not to give to a teen. I think that's because so many books (like above) are just as good for adults.
BJ - I have A Thousand Splendid Suns on my shelf, can't wait to dig into it ...
Jo - thanks for the mention above!

Heidi | 5 comments I just finished reading Barry Lyga's Boy Toy and I thought it was amazing. It's a little racy so I would only recommend it to adults who like YA and very mature teens. It's about a 12 year-old boy who is molested by his pretty 24 year-old teacher and how he is affected years after. I thought it was really powerful and I liked that it was a book about abuse from a male prospective where a lot of YA titles focus on the abuse of girls.

Blanca Nieves (blanmuse) Hello ¡
I've just joined this group. I'm reading the second book of the book series "The Wheel of Time" by Robert Jordan and I like it so far, it is called "The Great Hunt", but if I had to recommend a book I would recommend the book series "A Game of Thrones" by George R.R. Martin, they are simple great, my favourites.
Now I'm thinking about whatt to read when I finish "The Great Hut", any suggestions?
Have you read "Jonathan Strange & Mr Norrell" by Susanna Clarke?

message 110: by Beth (last edited Aug 25, 2016 01:46PM) (new)

Beth (bibliocat4) | 9 comments Did you know that Robert Jordan passed away this year without finishing the Wheel of Time series? I had read the WHOLE series so I am disappointed that I will never know how it ended. (Unless someone else finishes it based on his notes or something).

Sarah I read Nick and Norah's Infinite Playlist by Rachel Cohn and David Levithan last week and loved it. I adore characters who geek out about music.

message 113: by Zarinthia (last edited Aug 25, 2016 01:50PM) (new)

Zarinthia | 4 comments my god.. you have got to be kidding me, i didnt know he had passed on.. i picked up the series when it was at book 9 thinking it would end at book 10. the books are way too thick though.. and i would have to re-read previous books to remember whats going on.. this was at wiki.

"Due to his health problems, Jordan did not work at full force on the final installment, but blog entries confirmed that he continued work on it until his death, and he shared all of the significant plot details with his family not long before he died. He maintained that in doing so the book will get publish even if "the worst actually happens". The webmaster of Wotmania, one of the biggest fan communities, posted that in a talk with Jason, "He said that Jordan has been dictating outlines and plot lines and everything else related to the final book. He used the phrase "army of writers" to talk about the people that were converting those tapes into written form. It would appear that the final book will still be published."

Janet Mitchell | 3 comments I just started Book Thief and I am really enjoying it. After that I am moving on to Octavius Nothing, which I have been looking forward to for a while. At the same time I am keeping up with my reading for my 8th graders. I have three classes reading three different books. One class is reading Blood Red Horse, which is an amazing book about the Crusades, but a YA book, which is part of a triology. The other two are the Alchemist and an Eastern Kentucky novel, River of Earth. I am struggling to keep it all straight. However, I just can't help myself. I know I have a problem.

Trevor Oakley (trevoroakley) I read The Absolutely True Diary of a Part Time Indian this weekend and was blown away. It had me experiencing all kinds of emotions all at once! Very funny and very sad, but full of hope throughout.

bjneary | 236 comments I couldn't put down this book! It was so wonderful and awful at the same time. Have you read his other 3 books---he is one of my favorite writers--I love his main characters, you can so feel what they are seeing, saying, feeling, etc.

message 123: by Bethany (last edited Aug 25, 2016 02:04PM) (new)

Bethany | 1 comments I just finished The Amber Spyglass, the final book of the "His Dark Materials" Trilogy which I devoured in a week (including waiting time for the library). I bawled uncontrollably after I read the last page, partly because my heart was breaking it was over, partly from the sheer beauty of the story and the message. I can't imagine right now finding another book to live up to it but I'll look among the comments here to try and find one. Any suggestions?

message 124: by Beth A (last edited Aug 25, 2016 02:05PM) (new)

Beth A | 3 comments Hello, I recently joined this book club to get interesting recommendations for my daughter, a 'tween, who prefers that I pick out books for her (can you believe it)???!!!

The last Trilogy + 1 that she read and loved was "The Uglies Trilogy: Uglies, Pretties, Specials, and Extras" by Scott Westerfeld. Prior to that it was the "Midnighters" trilogy by the same author.

She just finished "A Certain Slant of Light" by Laura Whitcomb in about a day-and-a-half.

Looking forward to recommendations!

Beth

message 125: by Alexandra (last edited Aug 25, 2016 02:05PM) (new)

Alexandra Beth,

I really liked "Midnighters", haven't read the other 2 in the series yet, but I will.

I'm not sure any of these will be to your daughter's taste, but here are a few of my favorites:

Airborn by Kenneth Oppel. It's an adventure, plus a bit of a mystery.
The Perilous Gard by Elizabeth Marie Pope, fairytale-like.
The Ruby in the Smoke by Philip Pullman, a mystery.
The Illyrian Adventure by Lloyd Alexander, an adventure.
Sorcery and Cecelia by Patricia C Wrede. A regency romance plus fantasy.
A Wrinkle in Time by Madeline L'Engle.
The Wolves of Willoughby Chaseby Joan Aiken, suspense/melodrama
The White Mountains by John Christopher, sci-fi
Drowned Maiden's Hair: A Melodrama by Laura Amy Schlitz. Warning (***and small spoiler***)

Maud is adopted by spiritualists. However when this is revealed they also openly admit they are frauds, and their senances are tricks. Some parents probably will find just the presence of this subject matter inappropriate for their children. Others may feel since it is presented as fakery, and the wrongness and cruelty of it increasingly obvious, it may be acceptable.

The Case of the Missing Marquess: An Enola Holmes Mystery by Springer, Nancy. Warning - the heroine passes through a bad part of Victorian London there is brief mention of prostitutes/ladies of the evening - without explaination/showing what that means, drunks, poor dead in the gutters. Tastefully done, should not bother most older children/pre-teens, but some parents may find this bothersome.

The Mysterious Benedict Society by Trenton Lee Stewart
The Book of Three by Lloyd Alexander, fantasy
The Neverending Story by Michael Ende, fantasy

bjneary | 236 comments If you like fantasy- the Stephanie Meyer "Twilight" books about a teen girl who falls in love with a vampire is totally awesome!
I like Garth Nix's Sabriel series too
and
Holly Black's "Tithe" books are great and about a girl who is a faery and in love with a prince from the underworld.

message 128: by Lou (last edited Aug 25, 2016 02:05PM) (new)

Lou (monspetits) Hey Bethany, I totally feel your pain. I finished the trilogy two weeks ago and I was so crushed. :( It was so sad but so beautiful at the same time. I loved the three books. I wonder if there is something similar to read?

message 129: by Beth A (last edited Aug 25, 2016 02:07PM) (new)

Beth A | 3 comments Thanks, bj, I saw the "Tithe" series on Amazon and they caught my eye, and I will check out the "Twilight" and "Sabriel" books. I really appreciate all of the recomendations, you all are great.

Alissa (book_girl_14) | 2 comments I just finished Rebel Angels by Libba Bray. It was fantastic!!!!!!!!!!!! I can't wait to see what happens between Gemma and Kartik in the next one!

message 131: by Kaitlyn (new)

Kaitlyn Marr | 2 comments "The Lost Boy," is a very very good book. I enjoyed reading it a lot. The things that happen in this book really make you think! This book is somewhat sad at some points but turns out happy if you just keep reading...read this book and you will know exactly what im talking about.

Make sure you read the first one "A Child Called It" and then read "The Lost Boy."

message 132: by Kaitlyn (new)

Kaitlyn Marr | 2 comments I have heard of that book before...is it good??

message 133: by Debra (new)

Debra (dlgarfinkle) | 3 comments The last teen book I read was Blood Brothers by S.A. Harazin. I really enjoyed it. It's a compelling page-turner about a teenage boy who works in a hospital, trying to find out what caused his best friend to lie in a coma in the same hospital.

elissa (librarianbodyworkerelissa) | 11 comments My favorite book in the past month was REPOSSESSED by A.M. Jenkins. I hadn't gotten around to reading it until it won the Printz Honor, so I'm glad that it did!

message 135: by Crystal (last edited Feb 20, 2008 09:05AM) (new)

Crystal Allen | 8 comments I just finished reading Life As We Knew It by Susan Beth Pfeffer. It's told in diary format from the point of view of a 16 year old girl before and after a comet crashes into the moon pushing it closer to the earth. Earthquakes, tsunamis and volcanic blasts result from the tidal change and the world is pushed into chaos. A really wonderful read!

I can't wait to read the next book The Dead and the Gone about the same situation told through the eyes of a new character!

message 136: by Atomicgirl (new)

Atomicgirl | 11 comments briana, Twisted Sister sounds fascinating but I can't find a book with that same title. You don't happen to know the author, too?

I've just finished Erec Rex: The Dragon's Eye and Evolution, Me and Other Freaks of Nature (finished this book in a day!). Great books.

message 137: by Maggie (new)

Maggie (rubyshoes34) | 1 comments In the Space Left Behind by Joan Ackermann--good pick for reluctant readers as well.

message 138: by Lisa (new)

Lisa (trmite) I just finished The Dead and the Gone. I was pleased that it is as wonderful as Life As We Knew It. You'll like it as much.

message 139: by Melissa (new)

Melissa (melissacwalker) | 5 comments I just finished Sarah Grace McCandless's THE GIRL I WANTED TO BE. A lovely read about when the person you've always looked up to turns out to be.... real.

message 140: by Veronica (new)

Veronica (v_a_b) I love Stargirl by Jerry Spineli

message 141: by Jeannine (new)

Jeannine (jeanninegarsee) | 7 comments YA: Lessons from a Dead Girl by Jo Knowles--a debut novel, riveting and disturbing.

Adult: Nineteen Minutes by Jodie Picoult (so far I haven't read anything by her I didn't like)

message 142: by Steph (new)

Steph (kitsune_chan) | 2 comments My fav book(s) in the last month has to be the Abhorsen Trilogy by Garth Nix. I also enjoyed The Empress by Shan Sa

message 143: by Ash (new)

Ash (departed_dearly) Wicked: The Life and Times of the Wicked Witch of the West

message 144: by Violaceous (new)

Violaceous | 4 comments It's a toss up between Thirsty by M.T. Anderson and Tithe by Holly Black.

message 145: by Caitlín (new)

Caitlín K (inkmage) | 9 comments I can't decide between Zoë Marriott's The Swan Kingdom and The Hollow Kingdom by Clare B. Dunkle (a reread).

message 146: by Brandon (new)

Brandon | 3 comments I just read Flight by Sherman Alexie, and was really pleased with it. Granted it has some strong language, but the character in the novel, Zits, is a great one. I've had a couple kids read it, and they have expressed a lot of interest in his other books, as well.

I also read Blankets by Craig Thompson, which I thought was a wonderful graphic novel. Definately for older teens/adults, but it is a great explanation of one sided relationships and about growing into the person you want to be, not who everyone else wants you to be. Loved it!

message 147: by Megan (new)

Megan | 7 comments For me it's The Disreputable History of Frankie Landau Banks by E. Lockhart. Funny, clever, and empowering -- I couldn't put it down.

message 148: by Maya (new)

Maya (numerounochewylover) | 8 comments I completely loved the Twilight and that entire series! (one of the best ever!!!) Also, I just read A Great and Terrible Beauty by Libba Bray, also wonderful!

message 149: by Celeste (new)

Celeste (celestelueck) | 5 comments I just finished the 1st in the Maximum Ride series by James Patterson. Talk about a page turner. I sure do recommend it, I've also noticed this book is no longer just in the YA section of BN, but now also appear in the adult section. Reader certainly can change things. One small change at a time.

I finished earlier in the month The Tiger in the Well by Philip Pullman. This is one of his YA mysteries set in Victorian England and has a sixteen year old, Sally Lockheart, at their core. Very enjoyable.
