Kelley Anne | 1619 comments This is for those of you who would also like to discuss Hunting Ground by Patricia Briggs.

As discussed in a different discussion, we wont me continuing the mini-reads next month so this thread is for those of you who would still be interested in discussing the second book in the series.

Spoilers are welcome and I'll probably be posting some questions about the book throughout the month to keep the discussion going.

Hunting Ground (Alpha & Omega, #2) by Patricia Briggs

message 2: by Literary Ames (new)

Literary Ames (amyorames) | 237 comments I loved this book. I really like the idea that Charles and his wolf are seperate entities and that Brother Wolf can reach out and communicate with Anna.

Anna's makes great progress in her recovery and gains more confidence in this book. I especially liked it when Anna was teaching the Austrian omega what she'd learned and then faced off with The Beast. That took guts.

I was shouting "No!" when Anna was kidnapped just as she was about to touch Charles without using her wolf to give her confidence because she was about to take another step towards being more comfortable around Charles.

Charles and Anna's relationship is beautifully portrayed as they get to know each other. Anna is the only one, other than Bran and Samuel, who isn't afraid of him and who can make him back down. They are one of my favourite couples.

I can't wait for the next book to come out. Anyone know when that will be?

♥Lynn ♥ Aug of 2010, is the next book. It is not titled yet on goodreads. I really liked Hunting Ground compared to Cry Wolf. The series is getting better with each book. For the life of me, at first I could not remember who was wearing the wool coat and buttons. Briggs made a passing comment about it and I told myself to remember who it was, but I forgot anyway. Arthur was crazy!! I liked how Anna stood up to Dana from beg. to the end. Charles is strong in body and mind, it takes someone who will stand up with and for him. I am loving Brother Wolf more and more as well. I also really liked reading about how close they are becoming. I know it is not going to be an overnight issue with Anna's past, I am just glad Charles is taking him time and not trying to scare her more. Do you think that Anna and her wolf will become more like Charles and his?

Thanks Lynn.

Lynn wrote: "...Do you think that Anna and her wolf will become more like Charles and his?"

I don't know, it may just be because Charles was born a wolf or the magic he's inherited, or maybe he's more in tune with his wolf. Charles is quite old, perhaps it's something he's gained with age and experience. I suppose being mated to Charles it could be possible that the bond will change Anna's relationship with her wolf. Who knows?

message 5: by Kelley Anne (new)

Kelley Anne | 1619 comments I've been wondering about that myself. It seems like some of the "talents" that Charles has are rubbing off on Anna. I mean, in a whole group of Alpha's she was the first to change. Seems like that's because Charles can change to quickly. I wonder if the mate bond will cause more of his talents to transfer to her.

message 6: by Literary Ames (new)

Literary Ames (amyorames) | 237 comments Oh yeah, I forgot about that but then I wonder if that could be down to Anna's omega abilties?

message 7: by Kelley Anne (new)

Kelley Anne | 1619 comments I don't think so. Because she's been a werewolf for 3 years and it wasn't until she was mated with Charles that she found she's changing faster. I also wonder if part of it has to do with them become closer within the bond. They are opening up to each other more. Maybe that causes that magic to become changed. Who knows!

message 8: by Jess (new)

Jess | 3721 comments I thought it was a combination of things. Because Charles was higher in pack structure than all the others, his power went to Anna and also because since she is an Omega, she is technically outside the pack hierarchy.

Wait, I think I just confused myself... hmm. I think it's a part of her being an Omega and getting her power from Charles. Yeah.

message 9: by Amber (new)

Amber (peachystateofmind) | 16 comments I love how Charles refers to his wolf as brother wolf. I think it shows his strength and why he so formendable in his role as inforcer. I think Anna being an Omega has "powers" of its own besides calming other wolves. As the series goes, I'm sure we will find out more as it seems not many have been around an Omega before. I do see her strengths increasing as the bond they forge gets stronger especially when it is as strong as it is. Another reason may be because his wolf chose her.

I think some of the best books are the ones you go back and read and find even more than you did the first time you read and you still like it if not more than the first time around. I find Brigg's Mercy series and this one to be that way. I just love them.

message 10: by Narnies (new)

Narnies I think what I appreciate most about the series is Brigg's effort to be realistic about what has happened to Anna in the past and that it will take time for her to trust and grow stronger as a person. I get sick of reading books where the hero and heroine meet each other and fall madly in love at the drop of a hat. I adore that the two are taking their time and respecting each others space.

♥Lynn ♥ Ariana wrote, "I get sick of reading books where the hero and heroine meet each other and fall madly in love at the drop of a hat. I adore that the two are taking their time and respecting each others space."

Amen! I also like that about the Mercy series. I like the strong women who just do not go, "ok" and not wonder what the crap did I get into.

message 12: by FlibBityFLooB (new)

FlibBityFLooB | 0 comments Hehehe. The ending got a little weird for me, especially when the dead girl started talking to Anna. But, I really liked the book. The ending just took a weird twist. :)

message 13: by Literary Ames (new)

Literary Ames (amyorames) | 237 comments I thought that was a bit odd too but then it was the mysteriously scary leaders of the fae so anything to do with them was bound to be weird.

message 14: by Kelley Anne (new)

Kelley Anne | 1619 comments I love that it was Anna who always seems to be able to save the day! I mean, she's matted to the most feared werewolf in the country/world and yet, she keeps saving him! I Love It!

What did everyone think about Angus and that whole scene in the hotel room? I had to laugh when Anna kept giving him orders! And when he started talking bad about Charles, LOL! "I don't ever want to face that man fang and claw." "If you don't shut up, you might not ever have to worry about it!" I LOVE ANNA!

message 15: by Narnies (new)

Narnies :) Nice quotes.

message 16: by FlibBityFLooB (new)

FlibBityFLooB | 0 comments I loved it when Anna took control after the Hunt had ended. She saved Charles' butt!

message 17: by ♥Lynn ♥ (new)

♥Lynn ♥ I kept laughing when reading the part after the hunt when Anna ordered Angus NO and then went after Charles. He could not get over that Anna had left orders for Angus. I love it when men think are feeling one way and surprise we are stronger than we look. It was so funny! Anna is my type of woman, take charge and sort out how I feel later. I also like how Anna finally felt comfortable with Charles to ask him about sex and things. It sucks that she was stolen right after, but even in crazy times, she has her head on.

message 18: by FlibBityFLooB (new)

FlibBityFLooB | 0 comments Was anyone else totally expecting a crazy violent scene in the middle of the hunt when they were in the tunnels? I was, but I was wrong!

message 19: by Narnies (new)

Narnies Yup I was, or I was expecting one of the other wolves to attack Anna. I was really glad I was wrong beause i hate books being predictable :)

message 20: by Kelley Anne (new)

Kelley Anne | 1619 comments I could have seen a fight breaking out between some of the wolves, but I never really thought that one of them would go after Anna. Most of the wolves just aren't that crazy to attack Charles's mate. Plus, the fact that she's an Omega would make it even harder to do.

message 21: by Narnies (new)

Narnies Yeah, but wasn't the Beast running with them, he was definately crazy enough to do that.

When's the next book out!? I need some more!

message 22: by Kelley Anne (new)

Kelley Anne | 1619 comments lol, I don't know if she's announced the date of the new one yet! I just wonder when exactly it'll fit in the timeline. Will it still be before the 2nd Mercy book? Maybe it'll be about the reactions of the world to werewolves! The Mercy series kinda completely bipassed that.

message 23: by Lisarenee (new)

Lisarenee | 2046 comments Okay, I will admit to being a big Briggs fan and have read all her books but Masques, her first one. Looked into buying it off of EBAY but they were going for mega bucks at the time. Then she announced she was re-releasing it with a sequel in one book. Guess who'll be first in line to purchase it? Alright, getting off topic here.

Ariana wrote, "I think what I appreciate most about the series is Brigg's effort to be realistic about what has happened to Anna in the past and that it will take time for her to trust and grow stronger as a person."

I agree. One of the things I also love about this series so far is that the healing process for Anna is so realistic. It'll take her time and will probably never totally heal. I like how Charles is so protective of her and understanding. You can tell he'd do anything for her.

Amber wrote, "I think Anna being an Omega has "powers" of its own besides calming other wolves. As the series goes, I'm sure we will find out more as it seems not many have been around an Omega before. "

I agree that Anna is coming into her own power and we haven't seen the whole of what she's capable of. She's had no formal training and with her being abused for 3 years she is only just beginning to discover what being an Omega has gifted her with. Plus, as someone pointed out the bond between Anna and Charles could lead to some interesting powers that other Omega's don't have.

I also liked how Anna's confidence seems to have skyrocketed since the last book. She seems to have a better realization of her own self worth. I liked how she seemed so much stronger in this book then the previous stories. Lets you know she's well on her way to recovery. I keep wondering in one of the wolves from her old pack will ever come into play in a future book and terrorize her in some way?

About the next book in the series I found this on Briggs' website:

"Instead of immediately moving on to the next Alpha and Omega novel, I'm going to spend some time re-writing my first novel, Masques and it's unpublished sequel Wolvesbane."

message 24: by Ellen (new)

Ellen (ellenpenleysmith) Wow. Just finished the book and... wow! I loved it! I love how Briggs has made their relationship so it's not perfect just because they're mated- they still have to get to know one another and trust themselves.

Lisarennee- I wouldn't mind having one of her previous pack members coming into play as a 'villian'. Becuase then that way we get to see just how much Anna has grown and come into her own self since On The Prowl.

I'm seriously sad that she isn't writing the next book like right now! :/
And if it were possible, I love Charles even more now than the last book. He's so protective in such a sweet, and cute way! (Although I don't think he will appreciate being called that)

message 25: by Ellen (last edited Jan 14, 2010 04:04AM) (new)

Ellen (ellenpenleysmith) Hehe. I just have to point out my favourite bits:
At the begninng when they're talking about how Anna hung up on Bran and didn't call him back.

"And she refused to pick up the phone when I called back." His father wasn't pleased.
Not so comfortable having someone around who doesn't instantly obey you, old man?

And the bit where they're talking about what his grandfather would have called Anna and what he calls him.
'She Moves Trees Out Of His Path'- Anna
'Running Eagle'- Charles (Too stupid to fly- Said by Bran)

Ooh, and when Anna was bossing people around! Haha. Funny.
'He Who Must Run Into Trees'- Charles

I was laughing for a whole ten minutes straight after that! Lol.

message 26: by Kelley Anne (new)

Kelley Anne | 1619 comments There are so many amazing tidbits and parts of this book. I just can't stop myself from constantly relistening it! Like I love the part where she stands up to the Beast! "He'll suck the marrow from your bones, while you're still breathing" I think that's the quote, don't actually have the book in front of me! And the whole "rabbit" conversation! LOL, couldn't stop laughing!

message 27: by Lisarenee (last edited Jan 14, 2010 01:55PM) (new)

Lisarenee | 2046 comments Ellen, Briggs has a great sense of humor. Did you ever read her Mercy series? I love the vampire with the Scooby Doo Mystery Machine like van. I have a feeling if I ever met Briggs we'd get along very well. I can't wait for the next Mercy book. I hope there is something linking it to the Alpha & Omega series. Sam is the connection between the two.

Kelley Anne, So is the audio pretty good? Some books (mainly romances) can really ruin the story because they just sound funny when parts are spoken aloud. Karen Moning's Fever series is one. Well, I heard the exert from Dreamfever she had on her website and couldn't stop laughing. Some things don't translate well from written to audio. I wouldn't mind listening to the book while out doing errands and such. I always find it hard to reread a book when there are so many others I still want to read.

message 28: by Kelley Anne (new)

Kelley Anne | 1619 comments I've really enjoyed listening to both the Mercy series and the Alpha and Omega series. Different readers for both series. But honestly, I am no extremly picky when it comes to narrators. Although I do have some favorite narrators. The guy that does Alpha and Omega is one of those! he also reads some of the Dark Hunter series.

Someone in my town owns a Sccoby Doo Mystery Machine van, it's painted the same way and everytime I see it I think of the Mercy series!

message 30: by Lisarenee (new)

Lisarenee | 2046 comments Kelley Anne, A friend of mine listened to Fantasy Lover and said it was hysterically funny being read out loud. Are the other books the same?

message 31: by Kelley Anne (new)

Kelley Anne | 1619 comments I haven't listened to Fantasy Lover. It really depends on who's doing the reading. There are some that i have trouble with. Holter Graham is the one that I really like. He does a good job. But, I am addicted to audio books! LOVE them! So, I'm used to the whole fact of one person reading a love scene between two people. Doesn't bother me at all.

message 32: by Jennifer (new)

Jennifer (jnhart) | 97 comments I liked this book (and not just because Bran was in it). I love Anna and Charles (and Bran).

I was surprised that Dana was so upset about the painting, but I guess I can see where that would upset someone. An incredibly long life and a painting of something you can never have again...kind of sad.

I liked getting to meet the European werewolves. I wonder what will happen to their power hierarchy now that the Beast and Arthur are dead? I hope we hear more about it in future books.

message 33: by Lisarenee (new)

Lisarenee | 2046 comments Want to bet Bran's wife does something in the future that causes trouble? Just doesn't seem like a good match.

Jennifer, It would be interesting if Charles and Anna had to go to Europe to keep the peace. It would be fun to see the two start functioning as a team.

Amy, Whoever owns that van must really love Scooby Doo. I think I would smile every time I saw it if there was one by me.

I know! Who would have thought a vampire would have that kind of sense of humour? I have only read the first book in the Mercy series. But I definitly plan on reading them!

I know! That too is one of may fav parts 'the rabbit'. Lol! I like how in the books Anna is growing more confident and so she's showing more of herself. I guess that's what I am trying to say... o_O

message 36: by Kelley Anne (new)

Kelley Anne | 1619 comments Just curious - for those of you that have read both the Alpha and Omega series and the Mercy Thompson series, which do you like better?

message 37: by Literary Ames (new)

Literary Ames (amyorames) | 237 comments At the moment I would say that I like the Alpha and Omega series better but once I read the next one in the Mercy series I may change my mind!

Darcy (sunnytat462) | 3123 comments I like the Mercy Thompson one better.

message 39: by Ellen (new)

Ellen (ellenpenleysmith) Having one read one MT book, I think I like Alpha and Omega better. But I still have to read the rest of the series!

message 40: by ♥Lynn ♥ (new)

♥Lynn ♥ Mercy! I like the Alpha and Omega series, but I think with Mercy and Adam just now getting together, I am more excited about that. I need more books to know how I feel about the A&O series.
