Kelley Anne | 1619 comments This thread is for discussions about Cry Wolf by Patricia Briggs.

Spoilers are welcome. Also, througout the month to help and keep discussions going I'll be posting some questions about the book. So watch for that!

Cry Wolf (Alpha & Omega, #1) by Patricia Briggs

message 2: by Jess (new)

Jess | 3721 comments I first picked this up thinking it was a part of the Mercy series. When I began reading it I was so confused. I felt as if I had been thrown into a book mid scene. Nevertheless, I finished the book and really enjoyed it.

Then I found out that indeed the book started off mid-scene. I wasn't crazy. That's when I realized that an anthology (Cry Wolf) had a brief pre-story to Cry Wolf. I think it was like 50 pgs. But it made everything make more sense lol.

Anyway, I like Anna, and she's an omega which I think is so cool, and I don't see it that much in books. I also really like Bram, and I liked seeing more of him than we do in the Mercy series. I hate his mate though. ugh.

message 3: by Darcy (new)

Darcy (sunnytat462) | 3123 comments Jess you are right, if you don't read the short story in On the Prowl, things seem very confusing as this book picks up literally the next scene. I liked this book as it allowed us a different look into the world that this author created with the Mercy books.

I agree with you. It was interesting seeing characters introduced in the Mercy series from a different perspective. I wonder if Anna and Mercy will ever meet.

message 5: by Darcy (new)

Darcy (sunnytat462) | 3123 comments I would love it if at some point the characters crossed over. For some reason I can see Anna and Mercy being friends. Not the go shopping and get their nails done friends, but sitting around and shooting the shit about all people that are likely to have shunned them both in Montana. Mercy could tell Anna stories about Charles that she had growing up and Bran. That alone would have me laughing because with the way Mercy is she would do it with both of them around to hear just to jerk their chains.

message 6: by Aimee (new)

Aimee (facere323) | 21 comments I would love to see that, Darcy. I think the two of them would hit it off great! And I think that she might be able to bridge the gap between Mercy and Honey, too.

message 7: by Ellen (new)

Ellen (ellenpenleysmith) Lol! Darcy that would be very funny. Finished it a couple of minutes ago, I liked it. But I felt like there was something missing from the book that would have made it even better. Not sure what though. But I will definitly read Hunting Ground; already have it. Lol.

message 8: by Kelley Anne (new)

Kelley Anne | 1619 comments For me, I really enjoyed Cry Wolf. Loved the new characters being introduced and I enjoyed seeing Charles in this light. But I didn't necessarily enjoy the story line. I mean, it was alright. But I liked the interactions between the characters more than the actual plot. But then Hunting Ground, that book is probably tied for my favorite Patricia Briggs book! LOVE IT! The audio book is always my fall back at work. If I am just not in the mood for anything else, I'll turn it on. I've probably already listened to it 10-15 times!

message 9: by Ellen (new)

Ellen (ellenpenleysmith) Maybe that's what is missing. I haven't read the Mercy books; but I definitly plan on it... eventually. :D
Its always good to have a book where you can read a billion times when you want a distraction without it getting boring!!
I was a bit surprised that Briggs threw in the witch plot. It was out of the blue for me! One minute, Im thinking it's a rogue werewolf, but really it's a creepy black witch! :/

message 10: by Carolyn F. (new)

Carolyn F. I loved Anna and Charles. Such a slow mating for werewolves. You have to read On the Prowl first to find out how they met. I really liked this book.

message 11: by Kelley Anne (new)

Kelley Anne | 1619 comments Carolyn wrote: "I loved Anna and Charles. Such a slow mating for werewolves. You have to read On the Prowl first to find out how they met. I really liked this book. "

I agree! That's one of the things that I love about this series. The relationship aspect is a bit more true to life than a lot of books out there. They are just slowly getting to know each other and feel comfortable with each other. I think that's one of the reasons that I love Hunting Ground so much. They are still trying to figure everything out. Anna's still attempting to come into her own confidence and powers while trying to figure out the whole mating aspect with Charles. Love it!

message 12: by Kelley Anne (new)

Kelley Anne | 1619 comments Couple of general questions for everyone about the book:

1. Which character do you like the most and why? The least and why?
2. Are there situations and/or characters you can identify with, if so how?

Love to hear what everyone says!

Darcy (sunnytat462) | 3123 comments 1. Which character do you like the most and why? The least and why?
2. Are there situations and/or characters you can identify with, if so how?

I liked Anna the most, the reason is she accepted what happened with the mating with Charles and all the bad stuff that happened in her life and in this book looking to move on and figure out exactly what an omega is and what that means to her life. I also liked how she took things slow with Charles.

Aimee (facere323) | 21 comments 1. Which character do you like the most and why? The least and why?

Part of me wants to say Anna. She's accepted what life has thrown at her with her werewolf attack and the change, and is striving to move past it. And she's not whiney about it, either. She doesn't demand sympathy for what has been done to her since and does her best to accept that it wasn't her fault. But the other part of me wants to say Charles. He recognized what Anna was from the start. He also recognized the situation she was in and what she went through. He took the time to be patient with her and work at her pace so that she would be comfortable. That's admirable.

I'm not sure who I would relate to because in a way I relate to one aspect of most of the characters.

message 15: by Tina (new)

Tina | 39 comments I luved this series. I read MT first. I'm not sure if that had anything to do with my opinion of Cry Wolf. Would I have luved it just as much if I wasn't already familiar with the world?

1. I like Anna (strong) and Charles (compassionate). I love their relationship. They have a wonderful connection. I liked how this series focused a little more on the romance. More than the MT series. I read this awhile ago so I can't remember all the characters. I'll have to get back to the least liked character. I'm sure there is one, just have to dig it out of my memory.

message 16: by Ellen (new)

Ellen (ellenpenleysmith) 1. Which character do you like the most and why? The least and why?
2. Are there situations and/or characters you can identify with, if so how?

I love both Anna and Charles. Anna Mainly because she reacted how anybody else would react to the situations. I felt like she was somebody I could know in real life. She didn't complain with what she was given, instead she is trying to make the most of it and move on without any whining. But I loved how truthful Charles was with her. I really started to love him when he was telling her about her optionsm and even though he would hate to have her leave, and how the thought of other males courting her made him furious, he still told her becuase she deserved to know. And he gave her everything she needed; time, space etc. I think I like Charles more than Anna though.

Hmmm... No, I can't really relate with any of the characters situations. To an extent I can, but it's no where near the characters situations; just along those lines I guess.

message 17: by Ellen (new)

Ellen (ellenpenleysmith) Ooh, I also loved how Charles growled at every male in sight when Anna was around at the beginning. :D It was protective, but not over protective.

message 18: by Carolyn F. (new)

Carolyn F. I loved the scene where he tells her that having sex should strengthen their mating, and when she says okay he pratically jumps on her because he's been trying so hard to be patient, waiting for her to make the first move. Loved that.

message 19: by ♥Lynn ♥ (new)

♥Lynn ♥ I am now a HUGE fan of Bran! I do not like his mate, but neither does anyone else for that matter. I want to get to know more about the pack in which they live in. I feel like in the Mercy series, even though she is not Pack, we get to know a lot of Adam's pack and how they work together. I think that is lacking here. Even in Hunting Ground, it is like only a few members of the pack exist. Cry Wolf is more centered on Anna, but I still do not feel like I know much about her. I think that a lot is taken away from the story when the POV changes so much. I still love this series and want to read it again, but something is missing for me. Just not sure what it is yet.

message 20: by Literary Ames (new)

Literary Ames (amyorames) | 237 comments Lynn wrote: "...I want to get to know more about the pack in which they live in. I feel like in the Mercy series, ..."

I think the next book will be more about the pack but the first two book were about Anna gaining some self-confidence and time to get comfortable with Charles before she fully embraces the pack. She's still learning how to be around dominant males without becoming afraid and I would imagine that there are a lot of those around the Marrok, even if they aren't living there, they could be visiting. She's also still learning what her role in the pack is. Plus there are those, like Bran's mate (she tried in Cry Wolf if I remember correctly), that will want to tear her down, damage her either because she belongs to Charles, jealousy or just for the fun of it, at least after Hunting Ground, she will have the balls to fight back.

I love Charles, he's so patient and understanding, even when he's beyond frustrated he does his best not to lash out or yell at Anna. I like Anna because hasn't curled up and died or turned bitter, she's making a huge effort to overcome her bad experiences and settle into her new life. Very brave. I also like Asil, and I wonder if he and Sage will get together.

message 21: by ♥Lynn ♥ (new)

♥Lynn ♥ I was disappointed we did not get to know Asil's son. At first, I thought he was going to have a role in the book. Don't get my wrong, I loved the series. Briggs can create worlds that are fun and entertaining. I want more. I love both Anna and Charles. I think she is amazing. She has not run screaming for the hills even though his pack in crazy, lol. It was funny to read about Sam moving in with Mercy. Bran would be a great series as well. It might get tiring to read about the same character, but I want to know more about him and his mate. I think Charles' grandfather would have called her She Who Pisses Off Many.

message 22: by Amanda (new)

Amanda (thehopelessbibliophile) | 14 comments Hi everyone! Hoping to get some advice on a book dilemma:
I was about to pick up Cry Wolf when I read somewhere on GoodReads that it's set in the Mercy Thompson world. If I haven't read that series yet, should I wait to do so before reading this book?

message 23: by Kelley Anne (new)

Kelley Anne | 1619 comments Lynn, have you read Hunting Ground yet? Asil's son is part of that book. Not a huge part of the book, but he is there. Maybe that'll open things up for him to be in more books in the future. I really look forward to seeing more of Asil!

message 24: by Kelley Anne (new)

Kelley Anne | 1619 comments Amanda - you don't have to necessarily read the Mercy books first, but personally I think that it's best if you at least read the first one. The events of the short story, Alpha and Omega and then of Cry Wolf both take place right after the first Mercy book, Moon Called. But if you would rather not wait until you read the Mercy book, you will still enjoy this, just maybe not get quite everything that they are talking about.

message 25: by Ellen (new)

Ellen (ellenpenleysmith) Really? Well damn. I have Moon Called but I wanted to read CW because I wanted to join in on the discussion (You see what I do for the group.. :D Lol, Joking!!!!)

All well, I think I am reading MC next anyway.

I know! I cracked up laughing at that part! I laughed at a lot of parts though. My parents gave me werid experssions everytime, but they're used to it. :D

message 27: by Narnies (new)

Narnies I like Charles the most, he's everything that you could want in a man and he's still got the animalistic side to him. Yum!
Oh! And i definately liked that dude that got bitten at the start and helped them at the end. I think his part was perfect. Tragic though.

Least is definately the witch. Duh! She was just horrible, especially the part where she skins the animal yet keeps it alive....*shudder*
I'd like to say that i dislike Bran's mate but i have the feeling that she's only temporary, that if she was horrible to Anna then Bran would drop her like a potato. Then again, she could make something of herself... but i doubt it.

message 28: by Ellen (new)

Ellen (ellenpenleysmith) Hmm... I'm not entirly sure about Bran's mate Leah. She didn't rub off as the nicest person around. Lol.

At first I thought he had a mental problem because nothing made any sense. And I just assumed that, but then when I read the part where he saved that person. Well... that's when I became really confused!

I can't wait to get started on Hunting Ground though!

♥Lynn ♥ Kelley Anne wrote: "Lynn, have you read Hunting Ground yet? Asil's son is part of that book. Not a huge part of the book, but he is there. Maybe that'll open things up for him to be in more books in the future. I ..."

I have read Hunting Ground. I thought that his son would have some type of role in the story, but he didn't. I was hoping we would learn more about him. I think maybe he will stick around and visit dear old not so crazy right now dad.

My favorite part of Cry Wolf would have to be the end. I loved that Charles called his family and had them there for the wedding. So romanctic!! I am glad that not only Brother Wolf, but Charles loves Anna. I would hate to see them be like Bran and Leah.

message 30: by ♥Lynn ♥ (new)

♥Lynn ♥ Was I the only person who that that the Vet in the beginning was the killer? I thought that he was turned wolf and was doing all the killing. I did not even think of witches. Loved that he was so protective of Anna.

message 31: by Darcy (new)

Darcy (sunnytat462) | 3123 comments I was mad that the Vet died in the end. I think if he had been given the chance he would have fit in with the others in Montana.

message 32: by Carolyn F. (new)

Carolyn F. Lynn, I think he was a killer that's why he isolated himself before becoming a werewolf. But I don't think he killer a human after becoming a werewolf, although I'm not clear on that from some of the stuff he said.

message 33: by Carolyn F. (new)

Carolyn F. Me too Darcy. I felt the same way.

message 34: by Literary Ames (new)

Literary Ames (amyorames) | 237 comments Just to clarify, Walter, the Vet, mistook a civillian for the enemy during his flashback to the war and killed him, that's when he decided he was too dangerous to be around other people. When the werewolf was about to attack the hiker the Vet tried to save him and that's when he was bitten and turned.

I liked Walter's character too, I thought that his post-traumatic stress was portrayed very well.

♥Lynn ♥ Carolyn F. wrote: "Lynn, I think he was a killer that's why he isolated himself before becoming a werewolf. But I don't think he killer a human after becoming a werewolf, although I'm not clear on that from some of ..."

From the start, when Bran first heard about the attack, I thought it was Walter not being about to control the wolf killing people.I was surprised it handled being turned so well. Then again, he could not take being with humans, maybe that helped being him from attacking others.

Kelly Anne or Amy, in the Mercy series, the dad that came to Mercy and asked about pack leaders for his daughter....was that not Anna's dad? I thought that was him when I first found out about Cry Wolf. Then come to find out she has not had contact with her family since being turned. Could it be the same girl? I will have to go look through the Mercy series to find that mans last name.

message 36: by Darcy (new)

Darcy (sunnytat462) | 3123 comments Lynn

I know the guy that you are talking about, the reporter guy from the east coast. That was too recently to be Anna, or at least that was the way that I read it.

message 37: by ♥Lynn ♥ (new)

♥Lynn ♥ Thanks Darcy, I was hoping we would see how she turned out, I think that is why I wanted it to be Anna.

message 38: by Darcy (new)

Darcy (sunnytat462) | 3123 comments I know what you mean. I would like to know too. I guess we can always hope there will be mention in the future.

message 39: by Narnies (new)

Narnies True! I forgot all about that guy, maybe Briggs will do another series on the daughter? That would be awesome...

message 40: by Darcy (new)

Darcy (sunnytat462) | 3123 comments I would be ok with just getting random updates through the course of a book, no matter which series it would be from.

message 41: by Dawn, Desperately seeking new worlds (new)

Dawn (dawnv) | 4058 comments I just recently read Cry Wolf and I have to say it was better the second time around! I really like how some of the events were weaved in with Moon Called.

As to who I like more...I think I like both Anna and Charles. Charles is fully aware of who he is and his power yet he has no idea how to let another person in and yet he finds away to let Anna in. I like Anna because she seems well real to me, I like that she is trying to be brave without being whiny or bitchy. I also like the way she tries to handle the wolf vs herself

message 42: by Amber (new)

Amber (peachystateofmind) | 16 comments I totally devoured this book when I got it.
Of course I wanted to read this series because it was an offshot of the Mercy books.
Charles is an interesting character- possessive yet gentle; in command; feared; respected. I love how Anna affects him. I like Anna's character because even though she is coming from an abused position and doesn't know her new role yet, you can tell she is going to be a strong character to contend with. None of that whiney stuff with her.

I couldn't wait and read the next one already. I'm going to have to go back and get Cry Wolf again just so I don't give away any from the other book.

FlibBityFLooB | 0 comments I haven't read the Mercy series yet, but I read both the Alpha & Omega novella and just finished CRY WOLF.

I don't think it was difficult to follow, even without reading the Mercy series. :)

I really enjoyed the story. I just started HUNTING GROUND. I will likely read the Mercy series in the future. I've had the books sitting on my desk forever, just hadn't gotten around to reading them :)

I loved Charles and Anna. I think it will be interesting for me to go back and read about Charles in Moon Called which takes place before he meets Anna, correct?

Is that the next book in the series? I am so out of touch with my fantasy book :-(

Or did you mean the Mercy series which is Moon Called? And Charles is in the book briefly before he meets Anna.

message 45: by Ellen (new)

Ellen (ellenpenleysmith) Moon Called is the first book in the Mercy series.

message 46: by FlibBityFLooB (new)

FlibBityFLooB | 0 comments Sorry, I meant Moon Called, not MOon rising :)

message 47: by Kelley Anne (new)

Kelley Anne | 1619 comments Lynn - sorry! Haven't been by my computer all day or else I would have answered you sooner! Darcy's right, that took place later. In fact, in the time line, I think it was about 6 month or so after Hunting Ground takes place. Between the two series, Moon Called comes first, Alpha & Omega / Cry Wolf take place overtop of the ending of Moon called. Then comes Hunting Ground. Then Blood Bound takes place either 6 months or a year later. Can't really remember exactly. And it's either that book or Iron Kissed when the reporter comes. Can't remember off of the top of my head. Also, in (I Think) Bone Crossed when Mercy asks Bran how the girl is doing, he mentions her name. Can't remember what it is though. Maybe we'll see her in the alpha and Omega series. I wouldn't be at all surprised!

message 48: by Alicia (new)

Alicia (aliciab249) | 3 comments Hello-

I am new to this whole website and found you all talking about my favorite author. It is in Iron Kissed that the reported shows up looking for help for his daughter. I cannot think of her name either. I think that you are on to something about seeing more of her in the Alpha and Omega series. That would be fun to have the stories run together like that.

I really recommend the Mercy Thompson novels and can’t wait for the next one to come out in March.

Have fun reading all!

message 49: by Sandra, Need more time to Read!! (new)

Sandra | 4734 comments Read Moon Called 2 days ago - great, Alpha & Omega from On the Prowl early, early this morning, so I could read Cry Wolf today. They've all been fantastic. I don't know why I'd been putting them off.

She's a very good writer and I've thoroughly enjoyed her world. Just waiting on Hunting Ground to arrive in the post, impatiently!

message 50: by Kelley Anne (new)

Kelley Anne | 1619 comments Glad that you are enjoying her books Sandra! Briggs is one of my favorite authors. You'll really enjoy the rest of her Mercy series when you get a chance to read them too! So far there are 4 out in that series, with the 5th being released in March (I think that's the month).
