Joy H. (joyofglensfalls) | 16697 comments Thanks for the link, Jim. It must take a lot of patience to train horses. I don't even have the patience to train our dog to do tricks! :)

Years ago I did some knitting, but don't do it anymore. At our library's monthly book group, there were several women knitting while we were discussing our book. It must be relaxing for them.

I have "The Sorcerer's Apprentice" (2010) on my Netflix queue.

Wiki says:

"The Sorcerer's Apprentice [in "Fantasia"] ... was adapted from Goethe's poem "Der Zauberlehrling". It is the story of wizard Yen Sid's ambitious, but lazy, assistant who attempts to work some of the magical feats of his master before he knows how to properly control them. Mickey plays the role of the apprentice."

I really want to see his new movie Season of the Witch.

Joy H. (joyofglensfalls) | 16697 comments PS - In case anyone is curious (I was!), below is a link to a YouTube clip of "The Sorcerer's Apprentice" from Fantasia with Mickey Mouse. It features the musical score by Paul Dukas.

Now that I hear it, I recognize it! :) It's so familiar.

Not bad. Probably better for kids. I gave it 3 stars.

Last winter I observed a lady I know doing the same thing. I got the bright idea I could do the this while watching tv and prevent myself from feeding my face. I contacted another lady in our Aging In Place group and requested she teach me (we post services we're willing to trade). We met in a MacDonald's and she taught me basic stuff (knit and pearl stitch). At first I struggled, but after a (long) while I got so I could knit little squares while watching Law&Order reruns. Any show I had to pay too much attention to (remember, I have to read subtitles) required too much rewinding to catch up. However, it never seemed entertaining in and of itself, unfortunately. Now it seems a chore to get it out and start on it. Problem is, I'D RATHER FEED MY FACE! I never got the hang of sewing my useless squares together to make something. They seem to be all different sizes. Another perfectly useless skill I have perfected!

Joy H. (joyofglensfalls) | 16697 comments Earl, about the knitting, you get "E" for effort. :)

I never became skilled enough at knitting to be able to pay attention to something else while doing the knitting. In fact, I can't understand how other people can do it. In a book group, I'd prefer that people in the group give their undivided attention to the discussion. Otherwise it seems as if they are not fully engaged or interested in the group's discussion.

As for knitting itself, at least I know how it's done. When I was young, I even made myself a cable stitch sleeveless sweater. By the time I finished it, I had grown out of it. :)

At one time I was brave enough to tackle the argyle diamond design. When I forgot to switch the color of the bobbins at one point, I gave up. It was too much work to tear out the mistake and begin that portion again. At least I had given it a try.

message 1309: by Jim (new)

Jim (jimmaclachlan) I'm just knitting a scarf, so I can watch TV. That's why I started doing it again. I can't stand to just sit there & watch TV or talk. I have to be doing something & carving is too messy. I'm almost caught up with my sewing, just one shirt left that I keep forgetting about, so knitting got picked. Oh & I fixed an afghan that needed a couple of holes patched by crocheting. I'm not great at that, either, though.

message 1310: by Jackie (new)

Jackie (thelastwolf) | 4050 comments Jim, I wonder if Marg will hire you out? LOL

message 1311: by Jim (new)

Jim (jimmaclachlan) You should have had some of the french toast I made this morning, Jackie. I haven't made it in ages since Marg usually does, but it came out really good. I put some vanilla & cinnamon in it, getting it just right. (Lots of luck there!) I didn't measure anything, just slapped it together. I fried up a pound of bacon, too. Marg got to clean up, though. And she had to find me a new can of shaving cream. I swear, I'd never find anything around this place if she didn't know where it was.

message 1312: by Jackie (new)

Jackie (thelastwolf) | 4050 comments You're sounding better and better by the minute, Jim! Marg is a lucky lady.

message 1313: by Jim (new)

Jim (jimmaclachlan) Yeah, all us good ones are taken.
;-)

Marg says I'm hyperactive. I don't really think so, but she's usually right. Unfortunately, it makes me hell to sleep with. I usually can't sleep longer than 6 hours & tend to move all over the bed. Thankfully, Lily doesn't mind.
;-)

message 1314: by Jackie (new)

Jackie (thelastwolf) | 4050 comments I guess that comes with the territory, but I would hope you'd be tired enough to sleep peacefully. I wish I could get a straight 6 hours sleep. I sleep for an hour, up for an hour, sleep for two, up again, it's awful. I never feel fully rested.

message 1315: by Jim (new)

Jim (jimmaclachlan) That is awful, Jackie. What wakes you up?

I slept good last night except three times when Lily woke me up because her ears were itchy. She's been getting goo in them for the past week because she had a yeast infection. I'm thinking I should clean them. I'll ask Dr. Mom when she gets up.

message 1316: by Jackie (new)

Jackie (thelastwolf) | 4050 comments Sounds like Lily's ears should be cleaned. Poor baby.

Jim, I sleep lightly so any sound wakes me, but even when it's quiet I don't sleep long. I don't know why. Falling asleep is even worse, sometimes it takes me 3 or 4 attempts before it sticks, and only for an hour anyway. That's why I'm reading most of the night, trying to get myself to fall asleep. If I can't get good sleep, at least I can get some reading in, LOL

message 1317: by Jim (new)

Jim (jimmaclachlan) That sucks, Jackie. Not sleeping well or long runs on my mother's side of the family. Her mother was often up at 3:30 in the morning after going to bed at 10 or 10:30. Neither Mom nor I is that bad yet, but we've both noticed we're sleeping less the older we get. Gram was that way her whole life, though. I really like to take an hour nap after lunch. I need more sleep, but can't do it unless I wear myself out physically.

message 1318: by Jackie (last edited Dec 26, 2010 07:28AM) (new)

Jackie (thelastwolf) | 4050 comments Even when I work and am physically exhausted, it's still hard for me to fall asleep and stay asleep. I'm up til 3 or 4, sometimes 5 or 6am and I'm up by 9 at the latest.
I try to nap but it's hard. Ironically I have a harder time sleeping at night when I don't nap. Oy, sleep is the bane of my existence. Or should I say, the lack of it.
I didn't mind when I was young and had lots of energy. Now, I don't have the same energy level so I drag my butt around all day and can't get much done.

message 1319: by Nina (new)

Nina | 6069 comments What's Christmas without the present of Books! I was thrilled to get quite a variety; starting with "Confessions of an Ugly Stepsister," by Gregory Maguire. This was a book from my librarian daughter who says she loved it. Then came, "The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo," by Stieg Larsson(have any of you read this?) and "A Pattern Garden," by Valerie Easton(the essential elements of Garden Making. Fun to look at the pictures even if I never take the hints to heart. Also, received a marvelous history of our city from the 1800's including a bit of Lewis and Clark and civil war battles. yes, there were battles here; cannons still up in the park. And then came a book by Cokie Roberts,"We are our Mothers' Daughters." And, "The Heroine's Bookshelf," by Erin Blakemore which is the non fiction story of many author's lives before becoming famous; Harper Lee and Charlotte Bronte and Jane Austin among others. That's enough of that but we did have a huge review of the book that won the National Book Award, "Lord of Misrule," by Jaimy Gordon. Story of horse racing. Jim, are you interested? nina

message 1320: by Jackie (new)

Jackie (thelastwolf) | 4050 comments I'd like to read Confessions of an Ugly Stepsister as well as Wicked: The Life and Times of the Wicked Witch of the West someday. I read Gregory Maguire's Mirror Mirror which was pretty good, I gave it 3 stars.

message 1321: by Nina (new)

Nina | 6069 comments Jackie, I will let you know my review after I read,"The Ugly Stepsister." I think you might like "The Heroine's Bookshelf." It is fascinating. nina

Nina | 6069 comments I am starting to watch this afternoon the four hour movie, "Eat Pray Love." nina

message 1324: by Jackie (new)

Jackie (thelastwolf) | 4050 comments It's that long? I had no idea! I think I'll be crossing that off my To Watch list...unless you tell me that it's the best 4 hours you ever spent, LOL

message 1325: by Jackie (new)

Jackie (thelastwolf) | 4050 comments We just watched Sorcerer's Apprentice and it was a lot better than I thought it would be. I enjoy fantasy like this one.

message 1326: by Nina (new)

Nina | 6069 comments The movie was really a little over two hours. I guess it must have been two versions. We watched the theatrical one. I suppose that is the one that played in the theaters. It was a bit confusing.I liked the movie; didn't love it. If you like Julia Roberts you probably would like it. I enjoyed the EAT part the best; filmed in Rome. nina

message 1327: by Jackie (new)

Jackie (thelastwolf) | 4050 comments What not to like about eating in Rome? LOL

message 1328: by Werner (new)

Werner I've seen a preview for Sorcerer's Apprentice. It's definitely a film I'd be interested in seeing sometime!

message 1329: by Katherine (new)

Katherine Totten (katherine42) | 199 comments Watched Thinner, adapted from the Stephen King book. It was so weird that in some places it seemed like a comedy, rather than a horror film. I watched the whole thing, so I guess it wasn't the worst movie I ever saw.
Interesting note: King has a cameo as a pharmacist, Mr. Bangor. His home is in Bangor, Maine.
Another point of interest to me: The film was made in 1996, price of gas $1.37.

message 1330: by Jackie (last edited Dec 26, 2010 09:00PM) (new)

Jackie (thelastwolf) | 4050 comments Thinner was a great book, I couldn't put it down. I saw the movie some years ago and didn't care for it much. King always makes a cameo in his movies.

message 1331: by Jim (new)

Jim (jimmaclachlan) Glad you liked "Sorcerer's Apprentice" Jackie. It was fun.

We watched "Inception" last night. I thought it was quite good. The timing in the levels of dreams was good in several ways. I can't really say much about it without spoiling it, unfortunately. Loved the ending. My wife hates Leonardo DiCaprio for some reason, but she liked him in this movie, so that says something else for it.

message 1332: by Jackie (new)

Jackie (thelastwolf) | 4050 comments I'm not a DiCaprio fan either. I don't know why. But Inception was fantastic, everything about it was amazingly well done.

message 1333: by Nina (new)

Nina | 6069 comments DiCaprio was pretty believable in "Titanic." Is anyone reading The Girl who Kicked the Hornet's Nest?" I heard on the Today show that it sold more than any other books on Christmas Day. I am just now starting, "The Girl with the Golden Tatoo," and so far so good. In fact, very good. nina ps We are expecting near sixty degrees by Friday and then cold returns. so far, no snow. nina

http://movies.netflix.com/Movie/Harry...

A revenge movie where crippled-up old coot takes on a dangerous well-armed gang. I liked it: 4 stars out of 5. It does takes liberties with reality that you need to overlook. But then, they don't seem to be able to make an action movie that doesn't.

Ah, Michael Caine!
Netflix says - "Harry Brown" (2009):
"Genres: Thrillers, Crime Thrillers, Action Thrillers."
"This movie is: Gritty, Suspenseful."

IMDb says: "An elderly ex-serviceman and widower looks to avenge his best friend's murder by doling out his own form of justice."
Trivia: "Michael Caine saw a lot of himself in the character of Harry Brown, e.g. they're both combat veterans (Harry is a Marine who served in Northern Ireland, Caine served in the British Army during the Korean war), and Caine lived in the same area that Brown does. It was things like these that drew him to the film."

Jim (jimmaclachlan) That sounds well worth watching. I love Michael Caine. He's such a versatile actor. Compare this to the part he played in that movie with Sandra Bullock where she was an FBI agent who went undercover in the Miss America pageant... the name escapes me now... they made a sequel to it, though. Anyway, in that, he was her coach on how to act & dress. LOL!
