Young Adult Fiction for Adults discussion
Introductions
Welcome Jessica! I read the Darkest Powers trilogy not too long ago and really enjoyed it. Hope you like it here!
Thanks for the warm welcome! I was thinking of trying Wake by Lisa McCann next, but it seems to be a love it or hate it book, so I haven't decided. If not, then the Hunger Games. I've just gotten back into YA books, so I have a lot of catching up to do!
I second the recommendation for The Hunger Games. I read the Wake trilogy and Wake was good but the ones that followed kinda sucked.
Hunger Games it is! I requested it from the library - 20th in line so I guess I'll be waiting awhile before I can actually read it!
My wife tells me The Hunger Games (along with The Passage) was one of the best books she has read in years. So...it's on my TBR pile. I imagine I'll be reading the whole trilogy here shortly. (Might have to read The Red Pyramid first. We'll see)
I have The Red Pyramid sitting on my book shelf at home, but I haven't found the motivation to read it. I need to get on that!
Kourtni wrote: "I have The Red Pyramid sitting on my book shelf at home, but I haven't found the motivation to read it. I need to get on that!"I had a lot of fun reading the Percy Jackson series, so I'm looking forward to this one too. I hope it's just as fun. :)
Hi everyone!I joined this group ages ago but I had completely forgotten about it. I fail, I know. But at least I'm here now, right? :D
Anyway, I'm excited to check out the group some more and talk about books with you all!
Aloha! I write to you from my cave in Hawai'i. I'm an avid YA reader, and I write YA fiction as well. The fact that there's a group dedicated to adults who love YA is just fantastic, and I've been scrolling through, reading and taking notes on books I've yet to read. Here's to a fabulous literary journey with you all!
Lloyd- I really enjoyed Percy Jackson as well. If you get to The Red Pyramid before me you'll have to let me know how you liked it.
Kourtni wrote: "Lloyd- I really enjoyed Percy Jackson as well. If you get to The Red Pyramid before me you'll have to let me know how you liked it."I will. Just reading the short stories in
made me want to reread the whole series. But the huge backlog of books on my shelf convinced me to wait. It's either
or
next.
Lloyd- I always recommend The Hunger Games over everything else, but I am biased. I absolutely loved that book as well as Catching Fire.

HiI just joined I think a couple of days ago. As a teen I never really read YA books but now as an Adult well I guess you can blame the Twilight Series for my new love of YA books.. Looking forward to lots of recommendations and discussions of books.

Hi Meme! The same thing happened to me. The first books to get me hooked up to YA books is the Twilight Series. Really felt like I was drugged by the series those times. I go with Lloyd, I also would strongly recommend you read Hunger Games and Catching Fire, especially now that the last installment in the trilogy is soon to be released! :D

I am the same way and now thats pretty much all i read. Which is kind of funny. They are way easier to get into anymore and I am not a huge fan of books getting to "adult" such as the Anita Blake series got the book 9 and stopped. Although do like some Adult series like the hollows and my favorite is the Night Angel Trilogy.
Hello! I'm new. I've been reading young adult for as long as I can remember. I think I took a short break during high school and pretty much only read high fantasy...but then that got old and I came back to young adult.
My favourites include anything by Melina Marchetta (but especially Jellicoe Road and Finnikin of the Rock), Suzanne Collins (her Underland Chronicles is so underappreciated.) and Cassandra Clare. Also, I just read Matched by Ally Condie and it was fantastic. I believe I have a new favourite there.
Currently I'm reading The Replacement by Brenna Yovanoff and waiting very, very impatiently for Mockingjay.
Meme wrote: "Thanks Yvonne and Ashalyn I will check those books out you guys mention."another great series that is Young Adult actually that got me back on the YA genre is the House of Night Series and Morganville Vampires, Vampire Academy. Although I do agree with Caitling's suggestion of the Mortal Instruments Series by Cassandra Clare (she is also super nice).
Wow, I'm gone for a week and group exploded again! Welcome to all you new people. This is a great place. Can't wait to hear from you all in the other threads.
Becca wrote: "Sweet! Was it worth it?"I would say yes today, but tomorrow when I return to work I may have a different answer :)
hahaha! I came home to a bug infestation in my bathroom thanks to a wet towel and the garbage being left for a week. I'm thinking six days of fun in the sun may not have been worth it, especially if these bugs get into my food storage.
Hi everyone! I'm 23 years young and currently residing in Brooklyn, NY. I'm currently reading Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince and Wicked: The Life and Times of the Wicked Witch of the West. No, I have not finished the Harry Potter series yet, and I have no excuse :P
I saw Wicked the Broadway show in February, celebrating my boyfriend and I's one year anniversary. It was fantastic and I knew for awhile that it was a book too so I finally bought it and now I'm about halfway through. I recommend it.

The kids were complaining and I had to drive around with the windows down to clear them out. They kept coming back.
I asked hubby to rescue us from the big, bad fruit flies. I thought it was something we'd run over or was in the carport. Turns out, it's not a good idea to put a banana in the doorjamb of your car as emergency food for the day and forget about it. Whoda thunk? In my defense I do have a horrible memory and it melted so it wasn't visible like one would think.
Welcome Melissa!Hahaha Peep! I've done that too, only it was a banana peel under the driver's seat courtesy of my son.
Hi everyone, I'm Rosabelle and i just joined this group. I love reading and like everyone here, I also read quite a few YA fiction series and are enjoying them. My favorite, is the Harry Potter series. I would like to read more YA fiction, as I find them enjoyable and the stories are interesting, even for an adult to read :)
Looking forward to get good YA books recommendations from this group.
Hi, my names Emily. I joined a few days ago, i thinks its great that there's a group for people who enjoy young adult fiction, there really is something for everyone here.
Kourtni wrote: "Lloyd- I always recommend The Hunger Games over everything else, but I am biased. I absolutely loved that book as well as Catching Fire."My wife's face lit up at the mere mention of my reading Hunger Games next. She got so excited she even told me that I could read the new book first when it comes in. That's a true indication that this series must be good!
So it looks like I'll be reading that trilogy before getting to The Red Pyramid. By that time, I'll probably have the new Heroes of Olympus book too. (Already pre-ordered, along with the next Repairman Jack book by F. Paul Wilson - a great series for those who have never read it. Even a couple good YA books with it too!)
Lloyd- I'm glad you decided on The Hunger Games, and that's awesome how excited your wife got! I really hope you like it! I'm thinking you will. I can't remember if I pre-ordered Heroes of Olympus, I think I did. It's pretty sad when you pre-order so many books you can't keep track of them all. Haha.
Yay, Lloyd! My hubby just finished The Hunger Games and can hardly wait to get his hands on Catching Fire. :)
Shannen wrote: "Yay, Lloyd! My hubby just finished The Hunger Games and can hardly wait to get his hands on Catching Fire. :)"I got my husband and older son to read these and now I'm being told that I'm last in line to read the copy of Mockingjay that I pre-ordered for myself. Yeah, right.
Ashalyn wrote: "Meme wrote: "Thanks Yvonne and Ashalyn I will check those books out you guys mention."another great series that is Young Adult actually that got me back on the YA genre is the House of Night Seri..."
Hi Ashalyn, thanks for that recommendations on the Vampire Academy I'm reading the preview now and its really good, but I have a question they haven't actually said what a Moroi and a Strigoi and a dhampir are could you tell me?
Kourtni wrote: "I really wish my husband would pick up something other than a mustang magazine..."Ha!
Stacia (Not Really Here) wrote: "Shannen wrote: "Yay, Lloyd! My hubby just finished The Hunger Games and can hardly wait to get his hands on Catching Fire. :)"I got my husband and older son to read these and now I'm being to..."
Hahaha! That's awesome they are that excited though Stacia. Stay strong girl, you get first dibs!
Now, if only I could get my wife to try, say, the Percy Jackson series or other YA stuff...But then, she did try (and got hooked on) the Repairman Jack novels by F. Paul Wilson (a character she once laughed at me for reading). I'll have her trying another series one of these days.
Kourtni wrote: "I really wish my husband would pick up something other than a mustang magazine..."
Oh, if you only knew how many hot rod and Chevy mags my hubby subscribes to. Yikes! And I don't even read magazines!

I don't read mags either Shannen, although occassionally I'll scan the covers while checking out at the grocery store to see what the juicy gossip for the week is. That's how I get my celeb news.

I just joined this group a few days ago and I was so excited to find out that so many other people enjoy YA fiction too! Right now, I'm rereading the first two Darkest Powers books after reading The Reckoning. Can't wait to look around some more here and get recommendations on other books!
