I just finished 'A Great and Terrible Beauty' it was so-so. It's suposed to take place in the late 1700s and she references things that happen in the late 1800s... Which bugs me. Also her 'kick-ass heroine' is whiney. But... I did just finish Hunger Games (again) so most girl characters seem a little soft.

Mila So, you thought it was ok. Not great but not bad?

message 53: by Rita (last edited Jan 24, 2010 09:24PM) (new)

Rita Stradling (stradling) Yes. I thought it was not great but Ill probably read the sequel anyway (cause I own it). I've read so many good books lately (Hunger games, Catching fire, Fire, Graceling, Shiver, City of Glass...) that books like 'A Great and Terrible...' Just don't measure up.

So, I'm about to read 'The Maze Runner'. Has anyone read this?

Rachel Seigel (rachelns) | 3 comments Totally an impossible question! I've liked so many this year! I think though, Marcello in the Real World, and If I Stay are two of my favourite teen books. Shiver, Catching Fire, Going Bovine, Hush, Hush, Leviathan and Wintergirls were among my other top picks.

Rachel Seigel (rachelns) | 3 comments Oh Yeah- Fire and the Ask and the Answer should have been on that list too!

Mila What the Knife of Never Letting Go about?

message 66: by Brigid ✩ (new)

Brigid ✩ Mimi wrote: "What the Knife of Never Letting Go about?"

Whenever I try to explain it, it sounds really dumb … haha. Here's the description:

Todd Hewitt is the last boy in Prentisstown.

But Prentisstown isn't like other towns. Everyone can hear everyone else's thoughts in a constant, overwhelming, never-ending Noise. There is no privacy. There are no secrets.

Or are there?

Just one month away from the birthday that will make him a man, Todd unexpectedly stumbles upon a spot of complete silence.

Which is impossible.

Prentisstown has been lying to him.

And now he's going to have to run...

Amy (aaammmyyy) A little on the late side but my picks are..

1) Everwild by Neal Shusterman
2) The King of Attolia by Megan Whalen Turner
3) The Dark Divine by Bree Despain
4) The Iron King by Julie Kagawa
5) The Splendor Falls by Rosemary Clement-Moore
6) The Maze Runner by James Dashner

Honestly I would say THE HUNGER GAMES and CATCHING FIRE, but those two are absolute givens and are there by default because of sheer awesomeness so there's no need! And THE KNIFE OF NEVER LETTING GO is high on my ginormous TBR pile! Can't wait to read it :D

message 68: by Brigid ✩ (new)

Brigid ✩ I loved Everwild! It was amazing! Neal Shusterman = awesome!!!

And yes, read The Knife of Never Letting Go! So good. :D

message 69: by Patty (new)

Patty | 18 comments I am a high school library media specialist and also loved the first two books of the Chaos Walking trilogy. I have recommended it to quite a few students, who also loved it and passed on their recommendation to others.

Let me add to the teaser:

As far as Todd knows, he is the youngest settler not only in Prentiss Town but on the whole planet as the virus that gave all of the males "the noise" killed all of the women. When Todd stumbles across a patch of silence in the swamp while gathering fruit, he knows he must try to contain his thoughts. If he can't all of the men in the town will know what he has discovered. Todd doesn't exactly understand the silence, but he knows it is profound.

Todd's discovery propels him into a journey of survival and discovery, dispelling everything he thought he knew.

Dang, I loved The Forest of Hands and Teeth. Wasn't the best book ever, but it certainly wasn't one of the worst. I wasn't crazy about the writing or the main character either, but I thought the plot was very intriguing and it wasn't anything like I expected. I thought it was going to be the typical horrific-fantasy thing, but I thought it was more emotional than what I anticipated. Just my opinion.

message 72: by Amy (new)

Amy (aaammmyyy) Mary was a very annoying character and the romance plot was pretty shoddy but I loved the book as a whole because it read like a zombie movie! I looked forward to the parts with the Unconsecrated b/c I could picture it in my mind playing out like a horror movie :)

Haha lucky! Too bad they're not giving out any ARCS of Mockingjay in August :(

message 74: by Mila (new)

Mila Jillian wrote: "The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins, most definitely (and I also must include Catching Fire since I read them as a set). :D (Unwind by Neil Shusterman is a close second, though. XD)"

I totally agree with the Hunger Games being the best read, but is Unwind really that good? I started reading it, but got disinterested soon enough...

message 75: by Chrissie (new)

Chrissie (chrissiegee) I think City Of Glass had to be my favourite read of 09. I waited almost 3 years to know how it would end. It was totally worth the wait!

message 76: by Maii (new)

Maii (maiita) that must've been awful to wait for three years..

message 77: by Annalisa (last edited Mar 02, 2010 11:08AM) (new)

Annalisa (goodreadsannalisa) My favorite YA in 2009 were probably Speak or Hunger Games, though it's hard to pick with so many good ones out there.
