J.R. McLemore I'm not a big fan of Koontz. I read two of his books and didn't really care for him. I decided to give him one more try and picked up ODD THOMAS. I was glad I did. I loved it! I thought his character development and descriptions were so good, not to mention the story. Since then, I have picked up other books by Dean Koontz. They were more like the first two I read. I didn't like them and I prefer not to read his work. However, I still praise this book and have the next in this series, which I hope is just as enjoyable as the first. I guess I'll find out whenever I get to it in my reading queue.

Diana J.R., did you ever read Watchers? It's widely considered his best book.

J.R. McLemore No, David. I haven't but I'm willing to give it a shot. Thanks for the recommendation.

Which books of his did you try to read? There was a period of time where his books were really bad. Most of his earlier works are great.

David Specifically what about the book made you feel disconnected?

J.R. McLemore Well, David, my first Koontz book was recommended by by (now ex) wife. It was HOUSE OF THUNDER. It started out great. I thought it was going to be a ghost story what with the woman seeing people from her past who were supposed to be dead. Then she escapes the hospital and somehow discovers she's in a mock town and I can't even remember what all happened after that. To me, it felt like a bait-and-switch story. Once I learned it was a conspiracy tale, the wheels came off the bus. I felt like throwing the book at the wall in frustration. I can't remember whether I finished the book, but it made me jaded against Koontz. I gave him another try with HIDEAWAY and also watched the movie. The book was okay. The third book was ODD THOMAS, and like I said, I loved it. I have since read YOUR HEART BELONGS TO ME. I have a couple of his other books in my reading queue, but I'm not in a hurry to get to them. In my opinion, he has some great story ideas, but some of his executions don't suit my tastes.

Nora aka Diva YHBTM was one of Koontz worst books ever, in my not so humble opinion.
Try Watchers & of course Midnight. Two very good Koontz books!

Claude Forthomme Melissa wrote: "I've been less happy with Dean lately as well. I loved Watchers and the Bad Place and, gosh, there was another one where the villain was slowly transforming while he hunted down his wife to kill he..."
I agree! Wonder why one keeps buying...

Sharon I loved this book. I read the whole series. I agree that the following books weren't as good as the first one though.

Chris my first Koontz book was the taking, which I liked. ive read all the odd Thomas books and loved them. I'm currently reading watchers and 40% into it on my kindle I am loving this story! I cannot wait to finish, but have to sleep sometime.

Ellen I loved Odd Thomas, one of his best books.

David McGowan I adored Odd Thomas. It's the only Koontz book to make me cry, and I've read a LOT of Koontz! I even treated myself to an advanced reading copy for my collection!

Becky I love the Odd books. The Koontz book I'm having a hard time with is 77 Shadow Street or whatever it's called. I've never had such a hard time getting into one of his books.

Becky Peg wrote: "Come on, have you people read Velocity or Intensity? These books kept me up at night because I was always going to finish this chapter and then go to bed. THAT didn't happen."

Intensity was amazing, very scary.

Scott I thought the Odd Thomas books were great and the graphic novels are really good as well.

Kathy I liked the first book, but the rest were o.k., I read them just to see where the character might go.

Katherine I think "Odd Thomas" was my introduction to Koontz. I really liked the first one, and have since read 2 more.
What do you all think of "The Face"? I borrowed it and it fascinated me, as well as kept me up most of one night finishing it!

Julie I loved this book, and I am big Koontz fan. I loved Velocity and Intensity as well. They are just different. I actually got started on Koontz by reading The Corner of My Eye and The Face.

Maan Penaflor I loved this book except the ending. Disappointed that Stormy died.

Jenn Odd Thomas is a beloved favorite character of mine. The first book for me was a nonstop read and i've read everyone since. I hope they make a movie but not screw it up. I found all the Odd series at thrift stores and book sales, they have a special place on my bookshelf. Odd Thomas (Odd Thomas, #1) by Dean Koontz

Jordan "You are a sad, strange little man. You have my pity."

Laura I absolutely LOVED Odd Thomas!!! I also loved the second one, Forever Odd, almost as much. Not too keen on Brother Odd, I suppose there the locale and plot were too far removed from the charms of the first two. Have not read some newer sequels called Odd Hours, Odd Apocalypse, prequels In Odd We Trust and Odd Is On Our Side, and another sequel Deeply Odd. HOW did I miss all of those?? So anyway, I have a lot of catching up to do!!
Of course you have to be just a little odd yourself to love these novels.

Jordan Jenn wrote: "I hope they make a movie but not screw it up."

The movie has been made, and Dean Koontz gave it two thumbs up. Unfortunately, it has no release date....not sure why the studio shelved it. There's a video over on the discussion related to the movie.

Jordan Laura wrote: "I absolutely LOVED Odd Thomas!!! I also loved the second one, Forever Odd, almost as much. Not too keen on Brother Odd..."

Strange. Forever Odd was my least favorite this time through. In times past Odd Hours had that spot, since it was clearly setting up for more to come that never came, except now we're getting more on a regular basis and it has been redeemed :-P

Tracey I loved the Odd Thomas series and have just acquired odd appocalypse so wondering whether to speed read the others (as it is a few years since I read them) before getting stuck into this one hmmm ponder

Jordan I am. Mainly because I had almost no memory of the sequels....I've really enjoyed the trip. But to each his own :-)

Rod DeBord Books are like people...some rub you right and some wrong. I can't feel bad that you may not have liked the book or warmed to the character of Odd...it is what it is.

Me, I think Odd is a very special character with "Odd" skills but very interesting and laudable values. His reaction to events often surprise and delight me. I applaud Koontz for the creation of a creature so special.

AGirlAmongstBooks (Jess Green) Odd is one of my most favorite Koontz characters!

message 79: by Jenn (new) - rated it 5 stars

Jenn I love everything by Koontz, and Odd Thomas didn't disappoint, though I found the series to drag on a little. The original was my favourite, but I think it's time to move on to a new character before it get's overdone.

Jordan He could FINALLY write the third Christopher Snow, for example.... :-P
