Do you have any ideas of books that you think we should read? I thought about Ender's Game by Orsen Scott Card. Let me know what you think about and tell me if you've already read it. Or Shiver by Maggie Steifvater. Again let me know.

message 2: by Laura (new)

Laura I've already read Ender's Game, but if you haven't read it you should because it's a classic and I personally liked it a lot.

I would like to read Shiver.

message 3: by Tal (new)

Tal Taran (tobstaylor) | 178 comments Mod
awesome, what do you think about the other books i've put to read cos we can change them around or add some different ones. We can put Shiver to read soon as well.

message 4: by Laura (new)

Laura I've already read Sabriel and The Graveyard Book, but I don't mind keeping them. I'll just comment on what I can remember from them. I really enjoyed Sabriel, so you should keep that one, but as a warning it is a trilogy though I don't think it's as necessary to read all the books in this one (it's been a few years so I can't remember it all that well - just that I liked it). The Forest of Hands and Teeth sounds interesting too and if you want my opinion on books I'd like to read later just let me know.

As a side note I've already read Shade's Children too, but it was a while ago which is why I haven't commented on it. I don't honestly remember the book well enough to say anything. I mostly picked it up because I had already read Sabriel so I thought I would try more Garth Nix books.

I'll take The Graveyard book off. If you suggest some books that you think we should read then I can start a poll so that people can vote for which book they want to read.

message 6: by Laura (new)

Laura I don't mind if you keep the Graveyard Book.
Some books that I would like to read include:
The Magicians by Lev Grossman
American Gods by Neil Gaiman and
War for the Oaks by Emma Bull

message 7: by Tal (new)

Tal Taran (tobstaylor) | 178 comments Mod
I was thinking of reading American Gods myself so I'll put that in. The Magicians looks quite good aswell. I'm also goin to put in a book called Moon Called by Patricia Briggs, I don't know if you've read it.

message 8: by Laura (new)

Laura I haven't read Moon Called, so that would be a good addition.

message 9: by Leah (new)

Leah | 3 comments Here are some books I would like to read;
'The colour of magic' by Terry Pratchett,
'Mortal Engines' by Philip Reeve,
'Tigana' by Guy Gavriel Kay,
'Neverwhere' by Neil Gaiman.

message 10: by Tal (new)

Tal Taran (tobstaylor) | 178 comments Mod
Ok I'm adding 'The Color of Magic' and 'The mortal engines' I'll put them in next month's poll for the month after.

Tal Taran (tobstaylor) | 178 comments Mod
Has anyone read the first book of 'His dark materials' by Philip Pullman?

message 12: by Laura (new)

Laura The Golden Compass? Nope, haven't read it. Or seen the movie.

message 13: by Tal (new)

Tal Taran (tobstaylor) | 178 comments Mod
Yeah, The Golden Compass although it's also called The Northern Lights for some reason. Is it a book you'd want to read? e.g. Should I put it in next months book poll?

message 14: by Laura (new)

Laura Sure, you can put it in next month's poll. It sounds like something interesting to read.

message 15: by Tal (new)

Tal Taran (tobstaylor) | 178 comments Mod
Ok, I'll do that.

message 16: by Tal (new)

Tal Taran (tobstaylor) | 178 comments Mod
Since no one voted on this month's poll I shall have to choose myself. I think we'll read Shiver. If anyone has got any problems with that please say so soon.

message 17: by Tal (new)

Tal Taran (tobstaylor) | 178 comments Mod
Has anyone read 'The Mortal Instruments' series? I was wondering about maybe putting the first book of 'The Infernal Devices' series on one of the polls. I've read all of 'The Mortal Instruments' series that are out which is the first three books, there's another one coming out sometime. You don't have to have read the TMI series because TID series is a prequal series, so you can just read that.

Please vote on the poll.
Any idea's on other books to-read would be helpful. Any suggestions?

message 18: by Tal (new)

Tal Taran (tobstaylor) | 178 comments Mod
If you've read any of the books that I've put on this month's poll please tell me so I can choose different books.

message 19: by Laura (new)

Laura The only book I've read on the poll is The Color of Magic.

message 20: by Tal (new)

Tal Taran (tobstaylor) | 178 comments Mod
Ok, have you read a lot of Terry Pratchett's discworld? Would you want to read a different one or just take it off?

message 21: by Laura (new)

Laura I've read quite a few of the Discworld books, but I wouldn't say that I've read most of them. I don't care if you leave that one on the list; that's the only one that you really should read in order (aka first). I probably won't read it if that gets picked as the book of the month, but don't let that stop you.

message 22: by Tal (new)

Tal Taran (tobstaylor) | 178 comments Mod
Ok, It would be awesome if everyone could vote on the poll as soon as you can because it finishes soon. Thanks.

message 23: by Mish (new)

Mish | 7 comments Some newer releases that I am interested in reading are:
1. Claire De Lune
2. Angel Star
3. White Cat

Upcoming ones include:
1. Clockwork Angel
2. Torment
3. Crescendo
4. Linger

message 24: by Tal (new)

Tal Taran (tobstaylor) | 178 comments Mod
Yeah I'm waiting for Clockwork Angel and Linger. The Mortal Instruments was one of my favourite series so The Infernal Devices should be good. I also enjoyed Shiver because I felt it didn't feel the need to make up a random plot twist that changes the whole feel of the book. But it might just be me who feels that way.

message 25: by Tal (new)

Tal Taran (tobstaylor) | 178 comments Mod
I'll have a look over the other books when I'm slightly less busy. I have an Open University assignment due.

message 26: by Mish (new)

Mish | 7 comments Not just you totally agree. Cant wait for both of those. I already pre ordered my copy of Linger

message 27: by Tal (new)

Tal Taran (tobstaylor) | 178 comments Mod
What annoys me is that I prefer reading paperbacks and they're cheaper but they usually don't come out for at least 6 months after the hardcover is released.

message 28: by Tal (new)

Tal Taran (tobstaylor) | 178 comments Mod
I just looked Linger up though and it seems the paperback comes out a day after the hardcover which is cool. I'll have to put in an order myself.

Tal Taran (tobstaylor) | 178 comments Mod
Anyone ever read the book Homeland(Forgotten Realms: The Dark Elf Trilogy, #1; Legend of Drizzt, #1). Apparently it's a really good fantasy book. Do any of you think we should read it?

message 30: by Mish (new)

Mish | 7 comments I vote yes. I just looked it up and it sounds quite interesting. Even though it has a first series it sounds like this is a reintroduction to the charector so newer people can start in on the new series

message 31: by Tal (new)

Tal Taran (tobstaylor) | 178 comments Mod
ok, I shall introduce it into the next month's book poll.

message 32: by Tal (new)

Tal Taran (tobstaylor) | 178 comments Mod
Thanks for your input, it's always helpful.

message 33: by Laura (new)

Laura (lorseng) | 17 comments Homeland is the not sort of thing I'd usually pick out for myself, but reading the description and a few reviews, it sounds good and it is certainly something I wouldn't mind trying.

message 34: by Tal (new)

Tal Taran (tobstaylor) | 178 comments Mod
Ok we'll try it and if you don't like it you can always stop reading it.

message 35: by Tal (new)

Tal Taran (tobstaylor) | 178 comments Mod
Ok people, there is a new poll up to decide next month's book. There are quite a few YA fantasy books on there but for those of you who aren't so keen on it there are also some other types of fantasy.

message 36: by Tal (new)

Tal Taran (tobstaylor) | 178 comments Mod
Ok folks, looks like we're reading 'Mortal Engines' as it was the book voted on the book poll to read this month. Also , I'm sorry I haven't put a review up for 'The Magicians'. I'm was disorganised and on holiday and I'm still trying to get hold of a copy. I shall hopefully get a review up soon.

message 37: by Tal (new)

Tal Taran (tobstaylor) | 178 comments Mod
The new poll is mostly urban fantasy. So, I was wondering if any of you read more older sci-fi and fantasy books; epic sci-fi and epic fantasy. Generally these books are quite a bit longer and harder to read but if anyone is interested in reading some please do say.

message 38: by Tal (last edited Sep 02, 2010 02:42PM) (new)

Tal Taran (tobstaylor) | 178 comments Mod
We are now commencing 'Neverwhere' as chosen by you. Also I'm sorry that I've been behind on the reading, it's just I've been finding it hard to get hold of these books in time. Reviews will be up soon hopefully.

message 39: by Tal (new)

Tal Taran (tobstaylor) | 178 comments Mod
There were equal votes on some of the poll books, so I decided to go for the book that was voted for first. Therefore we're now reading 'Dreams Underfoot' by Charles De Lint.

message 40: by Tal (new)

Tal Taran (tobstaylor) | 178 comments Mod
New book poll is up so you can now vote. It is at the bottom of the group's homepage so it's easy to find.

Caitie (caitiegirlreads) (caitiegirlreads) | 5 comments Might I suggest "Pathfinder" By Orson Scott Card or
"Leviathan" by Scott Westerfeld. I know they are both YA, but they were entertaining. "His Majesty's Dragon" by Naomi Novik is really great too.

message 42: by Tal (new)

Tal Taran (tobstaylor) | 178 comments Mod
Cool, I'll check them out.

message 43: by Darren (new)

Darren Humphries (darrenhf) | 9 comments I've been planning a reread of Rendezvous with Rama for a while, so can I suggest that?

message 44: by Tacuazin (new)

Tacuazin | 33 comments Hello everyone,
My own list of books to read is starting to grow too long to handle. And I am not even following my own order! Too many books and too little time.
I'd like to propose these:
* The Magicians' Guild, by Trudi Canavan
* Mistborn: The Final Empire, by Brandon Sanderson
* Night Watch, by Sergei Lukyanenko, and
* The Hunger Games, by Suzanne Collins.
I've read good reviews of all of them, so maybe, just maybe, the group reading will help me focus ;-)

message 45: by Tal (new)

Tal Taran (tobstaylor) | 178 comments Mod
I'll have a look at them all for the next poll but The Hunger Games we've already read - though it was when we started so the discussion is tiny.

message 46: by Tacuazin (new)

Tacuazin | 33 comments No problem, there are still plenty of books we can read.

message 47: by Tal (new)

Tal Taran (tobstaylor) | 178 comments Mod
There always are - "So many books, so little time."

message 48: by Ryan (last edited Oct 28, 2011 02:57PM) (new)

Ryan (huli) | 3 comments I just voted for Scott Sigler's Infected for this month. I have read everything Sigler has ever done and re-read everything as well rofl.

I can't get enough of him. He is by far my favorite author. Once you read a novel of his you are hooked...well specifically infected/contagious/the rookie/the starter. Ancestor/Earthcore weren't as epic. What's funny is anyone who tries his fiction becomes addicted. He has a website with a HUGE community which he calls "junkies" (addicted to his writing) heh. Vote for Infected. If you regret it, I'll jump off a cliff. That's how sure I am :)

message 49: by Kevin (new)

Kevin Milligan | 54 comments I want to read Infected as well but I voted for "The Moon is a harsh Mistress" I have always wanted to read that.

message 50: by Chris (new)

Chris (kingtermite) When I was young I read a few of Michael Moorcock's "Eternal Champion" books. Specifically, I read all 6 Elric books, and a 3-books in one called "Chronicles of Corum". I loved both immensely.

A few years later I noticed they put all the "Eternal Champion" books in compendiums for each specific Eternal Champion character (Elric, Corum, Von Bek, Hawkmoon, etc...).

I bought all those compendium books and they've now sat on my shelf for a good 10 years. I want to read those.

Now that I'm getting myself back into reading more again, I hope to crack into those this year.

----

Also, I've had the Marion Zimmer Bradley "Mists of Avalon" books on my shelf for many years that need to be consumed as well. :-)
