Delanie | 40 comments This was a short story I read and I think the author was male. The little girl is generally ignored by her parents, and keeps telling them about the friend she has made at the bottom of the garden. Eventually the girl goes missing and they find that the supposed "imaginary" friend has killed her--possibly stolen her eyes, although I might be mixing two stories together.

Regan (livingscenery) | 49 comments Sounds like "At the Bottom of the Garden" by David Campton

Tressa (moanalisa) | 43 comments I searched for this short story for years before coming here and asking if anyone was familiar with it. Some kind soul found the short story for me even though I Googled the thing with as many different key words as I could come up with. I guess I just don't have the touch.

This is a creepy story that I never forgot (except for the title, of course) even though I read it decades ago.

Enjoy it all over again, Delanie. Thanks, Regan.

I so love it when people mention the title of the book their looking for in the description without knowing it

Tressa (moanalisa) | 43 comments LOL. I didn't notice that. I made up a title for it when I thought about it for years: "Down at the Garden Gate." Eh, I like my title better.

Shawn | 9 comments It's in THE YEAR'S BEST HORROR, volume VI, which I reviwed in depth sometime this year.

Delanie | 40 comments You were right, it was At the Bottom of the Garden. And it was as eerie as I remember...great short read!

Gwen | 1 comments I am so pleased to have found this! I, too, read this short story as a young girl and never forgot it (except the title.) I have been searching for years to find this story! As soon as the internet was a "thing," I began looking, always without luck; sporadically my search continued. On a whim, tonight I googled "Ineed" and "Enid" and finally got my answer! Clearly I'm not alone in my admiration for this spooky and impressive tale. I'll never forget the author's description of the parent helplessly trying to reattach her daughter's dismembered appendages, and the daughter's voiceless mouth trying to reassure her that "Ineed" could put her back together. I enjoyed seeing the cover of 'The Year's Best Horror Vol. VI,' as well. That was the one! I've bookmarked the provided link to the story and look forward to finally reading it again! Cheers!
