RandomAnthony | 14536 comments Ok, I know it's sacreligious in some circles to say Monty Python is not uproariously, knee-slapping funny, but I'm going to say it anyway. What do you think?

I mean, I think they're ok, and I liked Life of Brian, but there are times when I'm like...

"Ok...he's walking funny. Is that it? That's the whole joke? He's just gonna walk silly? And I'm supposed to pee my pants in laughter? Ok, look he's doing another silly walk. My kids do silly walks sometimes, too. I guess it's mildly amusing, but I'm not going to fall over laughing or anything."

So I think Monty Python is ok but not great.

You?

Félix (habitseven) Yes.

Strongly agreed.

When I was a lot younger and they were new they were pretty funny, now I don't get much out of them.

Jaimie (jaimie476) | 664 comments I love the Ministry of Silly Walks sketch. (See, I'm a big enough Python fan to know exactly what sketch you're referring to, RA. :-) ) I will admit that some skits just don't do anything for me but for the most part I love Python. In fact, I just got the complete series for myself at Best Buy for $39.99! And I have the next week and a half off to go through it. Yay me!
But even more than the sketches I love the songs. I can be frequently heard walking through my office building singing The Lumberjack Song. But "Sit on My Face" is my favorite.

Sarah | 13814 comments I love Python, but haven't watched any in years.

Kevin (ksprink) | 11469 comments i may have to delete my account from goodreads after this thread.

message 8: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 13814 comments THIS is the one that makes you delete your account? You have no problem with people talking about you being naked in a bathtub with a fruit hat, but the Python haters send you to the door?

message 9: by RandomAnthony (new)

RandomAnthony | 14536 comments Ok, Kevin doing silly walks naked but for a fruit hat, now I'd laugh at that...where's the video camera?

message 10: by Kevin (new)

Kevin (ksprink) | 11469 comments is Monty Python funny? what part of "BRING OUT YOUR DEAD" is NOT funny?

not every bit is funniest ever but all is so funny in an absurd way. ok? you guys need to check your testosterone levels. chicks think python is not funny. chicks don't get the stooges. chicks don't think Raymond is funny. put on some trousers fella's

:)

message 11: by RandomAnthony (new)

RandomAnthony | 14536 comments Kevin said "chicks think python is not funny."

gets popcorn, sits to watch the fallout

message 12: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 13814 comments I get the Stooges! Iggy rocked in those days.

Heh.

I like Python, SF, and comic books. I also haul my own amps.

I'm guessing I'm one of them exceptions to the rule.

message 13: by Félix (new)

Félix (habitseven) I'm guessing I'm one of them exceptions to the rule.

I guess that's why we love you.

my daily controversial statement....

message 15: by Kevin (new)

Kevin (ksprink) | 11469 comments should have said "most chicks don't get python OR spinal tap"

message 16: by Sarah (last edited Dec 23, 2009 08:06AM) (new)

Sarah | 13814 comments I love Spinal Tap too.

I don't like American football, pro wrestling, hunting, or car racing. Does that help?

ALso hardware stores. I hate hardware stores.

message 17: by Abigail (42stitches) (last edited Dec 23, 2009 08:19AM) (new)

Abigail (42stitches) | 150 comments But there are so many neat things in hardware stores that you can make into other things entirely different from their original purpose. Which only makes them cooler...

heh, I forgot to comment on topic...I love the movies, but I don't always like the sketches and some of the songs make me cringe. Mostly because I dislike sexual euphemisms.

Heidi (heidihooo) | 10825 comments I ♥ Monty Python!

When I was in high school, we'd all get together at a friend's house (about 20 of us) late afternoon on a Friday and watch the movie while deciding while coming to a consensus of where to go and what to do. It was my introduction to Monty Python humor.

When I was in college, I took a course - New Testament Survey - 30 percent of our grade was watching The Life of Brian and writing a comparison to what we'd learned in class about that time period about the social climate. It was the easiest assignment ever, and half of the grade for that assignment was just attendance during the movie - and people STILL skipped class!

message 19: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 13814 comments We got to watch The Holy Grail for a class once in high school; I think we had all seen it a hundred times by then, but we appreciated the effort. The teacher used it to demonstrate how grimy the middle ages actually were, as opposed to the scrubbed-shiny knights and princesses in other portrayals.

I like Spinal Tap, most (ok, all) mockumentaries, I used to appreciate "Weird Al" Yankovic (but Sweeter plays him a wee too much) and I like the scene in Life of Brian where one more mint makes the restaurant patron explode, and the one in the holy grail where the guard's arms and legs are cut off and he's calling it just a scratch.

But in general, I'd rather watch something else.

I think the "It's only wafer thin" sketch is in The Meaning of Life, not Life of Brian?

message 25: by Félix (new)

Félix (habitseven) Yeah but what's the difference?

message 26: by Natalie (new)

Natalie (ghostinmarble) you guys need to check your testosterone levels. chicks think python is not funny.

WTF? Here's a chick who owns every Python film and can recite all of them from memory. Spinal Tap remains a favorite as well. Gender blanket statement FAIL!

message 27: by Félix (new)

Félix (habitseven) Yep.

Jackie "the Librarian" | 8991 comments Monty Python is funny. The "Dead Parrot" sketch is FUNNY...

"He's probably pinin' for the fjords."

And I love Spinal Tap. So there!

message 31: by Félix (new)

Félix (habitseven) Natalie we need to know the answer.

message 32: by Lori (new)
