Julie S. 68. The Homework Machine
When the school year was still in session, I was tutoring a middle schooler. He was reading this book outloud to me as part of improving his fluency, and I wanted to finish it to see what happened.

It was pretty good, and it was just the type of thing that I would have liked when I was in middle school.

Julie S. 69. The Forest of Hands and Teeth

Zombies. Overcontrolling religions. Religion. Family ties. Those are a few of my favorite things (add music). But seriously, this was a pretty good book that dealt with all of those things.

Julie S. 70. Bruiser

This book tells the story of an awkward teen boy who keeps his distance from other people. It seemed like an overused concept, but this author put a great twist on it. I highly enjoyed this book.

Julie S. 71. The Friends by Rosa Guy

I don't know. This book seemed like it had potential, but I just did not get it. I felt like the characters were disconnected and too irrational, so it was hard to feel for them.

Julie S. 72. Mirror, Mirror on the Wall: The Diary of Bess Brennan, The Perkins School for the Blind, 1932

This is one of those Dear America books that tell American history through fictional children's diaries. I read just about all of them when I was younger, but this was one that I missed. This tells the story of a girl in the 1930's who becomes blind through an accident. She goes to a school for the blind and deaf-blind. That aspect was so interesting since I don't usually see blind characters featured so prominently in books.

Julie S. 73. Call Me Margo

This was a strange boarding school book about friendship and tennis. It was good but not great.

message 107: by Julie (new)

Julie S. 74. The Miracle Girls

This was a delightful, witty YA book. The characters were very realistic, so I appreciated this read.

message 108: by Julie (new)

Julie S. 75. Ties That Bind, Ties That Break

A short novel about a Chinese girl who decides that she does not want her feet bound. I really enjoyed it.

And, that brings me to my 75, but I think that I will see how much more I can do.

message 109: by Julie (new)

Julie S. 76. The Shadow of the Gloom-World

A short fantasy/dystopia book. These people live underground in tunnels and have never seen the sun. One boy dreams of something more, but he does not know what to do to find his dream.

Congrats for finishing (and early too!) Julie. I bet you make it to at least 100 :)

message 111: by Julie (new)

Julie S. Thanks, Andrea. Summer break from school really helped.

77.Just So Stories

These were some delightful stories by Rudyard Kipling. The language was odd at times, but most of the stories were good.

78. Where It Stops, Nobody Knows

A teen girl is forced to move around a lot, and she wants to find out the meaning of it all. Overall pretty good. In a way, this reminded me of Margaret Peterson Haddix.

Julie S. Apparently, I cannot count reliably, so this post will count for my Book #66.

66. Race Against Time

This was pretty interesting. Everyone is Standard, a mix of the races. Few purebreds remain, and they live in zoos until they breed more purebreds.

message 113: by Julie (new)

Julie S. 79. A Step from Heaven

This was OK, but I did not enjoy it as much as I did with some of her other books.

message 114: by Julie (new)

Julie S. 80. Shiver
A lot of the new YA urban fantasy/paranormal stuff is written poorly, but this one actually impressed me. I enjoyed this.

81. Atlas Shrugged
This one took a while for me to get through, but I expected that. I'm not sure how I feel about this one-I think that I have to digest it first.

message 115: by Julie (new)

Julie S. 82. From the Earth to the Moon by Jules Verne

I was actually reading this at the same time as Atlas Shrugged. Whenever something ridiculous or annoying happened in Atlas Shrugged, I just read some of From the Earth to the Moon to make me happy again. This is only my fourth Verne novel, but I could see myself trying to read all of his writings in my lifetime.

I love Jules Verne and haven't read this one yet... I may need to take a trip to the library :)

message 117: by Julie (new)

Julie S. Stacie, if you do that, you might want to also get the sequel Round the Moon. They make a more complete story if read together.

message 118: by Julie (new)

Julie S. 83. The Lightning Thief

Funny YA book about demigods (half-god/half-children of the Greeks). Complete with humor and a hero quest. Nice.

message 119: by Julie (new)

Julie S. 84. Linger

Sequel to Shiver. This one's colored ink was easier to see (with Shiver, I did not even realize that the ink was blue until I saw someone mention it in their review). This one was green so easier to see. Anyway, the actual book was OK but some things were a tad annoying after a while.

85. Breaking Up Is Hard to Do
Sequel to Miracle Girls but told in a different character's perspective. I think that I liked this character better than the other one. Overall a good story.

message 120: by Julie (new)

Julie S. 86. The Summer I Got a Life
I really enjoyed this YA book. It had a witty male protagonist, and the whole book was filled with humor and grace. Very unique.

message 121: by Julie (new)

Julie S. 87. City of Bones by Cassandra Clare

This was pretty good. I'm not sure if I will continue the series or not. Mainly because I'm confused on how many books there are and what order they go on. On the book, it is labeled as #1 in the Mortal Instruments series, and on the back, it says that Mortal Instruments is only a trilogy.

However, I've heard that Clare is writing more books in the series and maybe even a prequel. Maybe I should see if this is only a book rumor...

message 122: by Julie (new)

Julie S. 88. If I Have a Wicked Stepmother, Where's My Prince?

A cute, funny YA book. Some cliches (it's probably hard to write YA romance-type books without them) but overall a good read.

message 123: by Julie (new)

Julie S. 89. The Sea of Monsters
Sequel to The Lightning Thief. This had some more humor, Greek mythology, and adventure. Overall an enjoyable book.

message 124: by Julie (new)

Julie S. 90.My Worst Best Friend
I won this through a GoodReads giveaway, and I was pleasantly surprised. It was pretty good.

91. Round the Moon
Sequel to From the Earth to the Moon. I had a good experience reading them back-to-back. It seems like that is probably the best way since they do not read like book 1 and 2 in a series but rather like two parts of one book separated into volumes.

Very enjoyable book. This makes my 5th Verne book.

message 125: by Julie (new)

Julie S. 92. My Life as a Book
I won this through a GoodReads giveaway. It's a children's book (maybe middle school age) about a reluctant reader who likes to draw better. It was an OK book.

message 126: by Julie (new)

Julie S. 93. Next
Not the best Crichton that I've read, but the topic (genetic research/engineering) is both interesting and relevant.

message 127: by Julie (new)

Julie S. 94. The Titan's Curse
#3 in the Percy Jackson and the Olympians series. I am still enjoying these books. They are very fun(ny).

message 128: by Julie (new)

Julie S. 95. One Trick Pony
YA book on the magic of friendship, mysterious French people, and good coffee.

message 129: by Julie (new)

Julie S. 96. Interstellar Pig
Enjoyable.

message 130: by Julie (new)

Julie S. 97. The Mysterious Benedict Society
I rather enjoyed this book. This was an amazing children's book.

Julie, I remeber reading this as a child and I loved it! I love children's books so much that someday when I have a child I know I will be happy to be reading them again. Now the question is can I add them to my list?...lol

message 132: by Julie (new)

Julie S. I totally understand. I am constantly rereading books that I read when I was younger. It's so much fun to revisit not only that book but also that state of mind.

98. The Battle of the Labyrinth
#4 in the Percy Jackson and the Olympians series. Pretty good.

message 133: by Julie (new)

Julie S. 99. Jerk, California
I have mixed feelings on this one. It was interesting to read about a main character who has to deal with his Tourette's syndrome, but many of the other characters felt a bit off to me.

I'm trying to think how I can incorporate children's book into a challenge for next year, maybe a separate challenge?

I think a few of us would like this!

message 135: by Julie (last edited Sep 18, 2010 10:36AM) (new)

Julie S. That sounds like a good idea, Andrea. I think that I would participate.

Thanks for the feedback Don. I will talk to Kay and Joy about this and see if we can come up with an idea. I was thinking maybe a seperate challange area to read 75 childrens books! We could also create a seperate board if this does not seem like it will work.

message 137: by Julie (new)

Julie S. 100. Freshman
A humorous book mocking the Ivy League schools. Some of the humor was offensive or over-the-top, but much of it had me laughing.

100 Julie, that is awesome!!!!

message 139: by Julie (new)

Julie S. Thanks, Andrea. It's been a good year for reading so far.

101. Watchmen
Neraly everyone who saw me reading this book asked me, "You mean, like the movie?"

I had heard of the book but had no idea that it was a movie. The book was good, but I doubt that I will see the movie.

message 140: by Julie (new)

Julie S. 102. The Left Hand of Darkness
Really good and very unique.

message 141: by Julie (new)

Julie S. 103. The Mysterious Benedict Society and the Perilous Journey

As delightful as the first one.

message 142: by Julie (new)

Julie S. 104. Birthmarked
I really enjoyed this YA dystopian novel.

message 143: by Julie (new)

Julie S. 105. You

message 144: by Joy (new)

Joy | 1116 comments You rock!!! Over 100!!! Way to go!

message 145: by Julie (new)

Julie S. Thanks, Joy. This has been an amazing year of reading for me so far.

106. The Astonishing Adventures of Fanboy and Goth Girl

Quirky and fun.

message 146: by Julie (new)

Julie S. 107. Unwind
An amazing book!

message 147: by Julie (new)

Julie S. 108. Lockdown: Escape from Furnace
A library book that did not disappoint me.

message 148: by Julie (new)

Julie S. 109. Boot Camp
Very interesting and scary because stuff like this actually does happen.

message 149: by Julie (new)

Julie S. 110. The Last Olympian
A nice conclusion the Percy Jackson series.

message 150: by Julie (new)

Julie S. 111. The Carbon Diaries 2015
I had high hopes for this book, but I did not particularly enjoy it.
