I remember reading this book as a kid, and it was also made into one of those Saturday-morning specials based on books. I just remember that there were two boys, one of whom owned a dog, and at the end (of the film) he was laughing maniacally after something creepy had happened. The two boys kept trying to get into a room that I think was called the Red Room. Anybody got any ideas?

Yes! That's The Red Room Riddle A Ghost Story by Scott Corbett. I saw that when I was a kid, too, and it was really creepy!
