Anna Walls (annalwalls) I've no objection to joining in but I have no idea where the discussion is now. (Sorry, I really don't want to read through all five pages) In my opinion, religion is one big crutch. Am I too far off topic?

message 183: by Anna (new)

Anna Walls (annalwalls) Perhaps when you are an old soul like me you will learn to stand on your own.

~♥Alyssa♥~ (lyssie123) | 592 comments I just have to say that I agree with Katie and don't know how the other kids in high school around me go through it all with any bit of hope. Really, the only way I can imagine life without a little belief is just struggling to hold back some huge burden knowing that soon your arms will give out and you'll be crushed. It's...hopeless. Why stand on your own when you could have help to make it bearable? And now, because debating about religion makes me so tired, I will not post here again.

message 186: by Anna (new)

Anna Walls (annalwalls) Ah well, I don't see life as a burden, I see it as a journey.

fine, thats fine.
and i dont believe in anything, it means i carry no burden, i can do what i want to with my life, and i have to live with my descisions, but it wont affect anything that happens after i die

Rachel (aka. Kaiserin Sisi) (looney-lovegood) | 261 comments I'm really confused about my religious beliefs right now. I've been raised Catholic and there are a lot of things that I like about being Catholic, but there are also a lot of things that I don't agree with that the Church teaches. I'm in a confirmation class now, but I don't know if I really should be confirmed. And then, if I choose not to be confirmed, I don't know what I would say to my parents. They're not the type of parents that would be mad or disown me or anything like that, but I still can't imagine telling them that I'm considering not getting confirmed. :S

And then, if I do choose not to be confirmed, what do I do next? If I'm not Catholic, what am I? I've looked at quite a few different denominations, but none have seemed to fit quite right.

I'm not really even sure on what I believe on a lot of things. The only things I definitely believe in are that there is a God, and I think I believe in Jesus. Other than that, though, I'm not sure. :S

It sounds to me like you really should sit down and have a long talk with your parents (one or the other of them), or with your pastor (I hope that's the right word) or even with the teacher of the class. I'm not Catholic so I don't really know much about the church or it's rules but it sounds like if you decide not to e confirmed, you won't be catholic any more. Sounds a little strict to me. So, you really should talk to someone before you make such a life-changing decision.

Rachel (aka. Kaiserin Sisi) (looney-lovegood) | 261 comments Being confirmed is basically saying that you want to continue being Catholic. This month they're going to have us all talk with some of the people who work at the local church, so I'll ask then. It's just really frustrating.

I was confirmed, but not because I wanted to be, mostly 'cause my mom wanted me to be. I mean she wasn't pushy or anything, she'd'a let me stop if I said anything, but yeah. And I'm also not sure what I believe. I also think I believe in God and Jesus, but when I sit and think about it, there is so much "what if" and "but why" and I really don't know what I believe.

I don't mean to sounds pushy but maybe you could look at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. You just might find what you're looking for there. But you know, make your own choice. I'd just thought I'd make the suggestion.

Rachel (aka. Kaiserin Sisi) (looney-lovegood) | 261 comments Tara, it's comforting to know that I'm not the only person in this position. I tried talking to some of my friends in the confirmation class, and none of them understand why I even care if what I believe doesn't entirely match what the Church teaches. None of them care about what they believe and they all think I'm weird for giving it a lot of thought. It's a bit disturbing to think about, considering how much religion can affect morality and they way you feel on some of the most important modern political issues.

Stephanie, I looked into Mormonism a few months ago, and didn't quite seem to fit, although I do like a lot of the everyday practices, and the importance of education really impressed me.

message 194: by Stephanie (new)

Stephanie (chasmofbooks) Really? What didn't seem to fit? May I ask?

message 195: by ~♥Alyssa♥~ (new)

~♥Alyssa♥~ (lyssie123) | 592 comments Personally, if I didn't agree with what my Church taught (I'm a Mormon) I don't think I would still be going. So if your church doesn't feel quite right for you, maybe take a little time to find out what you believe and what belief system you think is best for you. If you choose not to be Confirmed (is that is? Sorry, I don't know much about Catholicism), can you be Confirmed later if you were to decide that's your choice after looking around?

message 196: by Anggia (new)

Anggia | 29 comments If you not sure, just take confirmation later. You can be confirmed later right? There's no time limit to receive this sacrament, so just think what you believe before you decide to be confirmed

Rachel (aka. Kaiserin Sisi) (looney-lovegood) | 261 comments Ha ha, there don't seem to be many Catholics on goodreads...at least not in any of the groups I'm in.

Yeah, it's possible to be confirmed later. I'm just finding it a bit awkward to bring up with my parents.

I have to go. I'll finish this post when I get back. :P
