Mary (madamefifi) I did a very quick and lazy search and couldn't find this topic--sorry if it's been covered all ready...

I probably do a re-read about once every month or two. Something I read--a book, a thread, whatever--will remind me of something else I read some time ago, and I will re-rad it. Does a re-read count as one of my 144, or is that "cheating"?

message 2: by LynnB (new)

LynnB I don't know about anyone else, but to me "read" means you start at chapter one and go to the end -- therefore, a re-read would count the same as any other read as long as I wasn't skimming.

message 3: by Mary (new)

Mary (madamefifi) Thanks, Lynn!

Lyn (Readinghearts) (lsmeadows) I agree with Lynn - it doesn't matter if you have read it before, if you start at the beginning and read to the end, then it is read.

message 5: by Sherry (new)

Sherry (wstridgerunner) I agree, "read" is cover to cover. Regardless of having read it before.

message 6: by catharooni (new)

catharooni oh! i like your rules! i get to add 21 books to this year's list! ... and i agree, if you invest the time, and emotional energy, it should count ...

message 7: by TinaNoir (new)

TinaNoir I agree. I was looking through my bookshelves (and boxes, and stacks) and I realized that I actually have years long backlist of some authors that I read 10 or more years ago and would like to re-visit them this year. As a matter of fact I plan to incorporate them as a mini-challenge.

message 8: by Ann aka Iftcan (new)

Ann aka Iftcan (iftcan) | 394 comments I have an entire list of books that I consider good enough to re-read yearly or bi-yearly (every other year.) They are books that are special to me for some reason--they taught me a lesson, I read them at an important time in my life, etc. And yeah, I DO count them in my yearly counts.

message 9: by Jessica (new)

Jessica | 20 comments I do re-read books fairly regularly, my favorites every 4-6 months or so. But I never count them when I add books to my yearly count. For my yearly tallies I count the newly discovered and devoured. So, for me...I won't be counting the re-reads. Anybody else feel that way?

message 10: by Kelly (last edited Dec 18, 2009 09:03PM) (new)

Kelly I personally agree that we should count re-reads. I've made a "read-again-someday" shelf on GR because there were a lot of books I would love to revisit, and I will be reading them cover to cover. Also, with some books, if you read them years ago, you can't remember all the details and maybe not even the ending... so it's almost like reading it for the first time (again) :)

message 11: by Athira (new)

Athira (Reading on a Rainy Day) (readingonarainyday) Ditto with most of the opinions here! I don't re-read often, but it's still a cover-to-cover read, so I would count it as well!

message 12: by Pam (new)

Pam (pammylee76) I agree - you read it you count it. Regardless of whether it is a "re-read" or not.

message 13: by Afsana (new)

Afsana (afsanaz) I agree with all-if you are readomhg the whole book it counts and why shouldn't it

Back in sept I started this challenge to re-read all my books

But if you just skimming or reading the ending then no!!

message 14: by Rayni (new)

Rayni | 135 comments If you'll notice on the review of a book here on Goodreads, at the bottom, it asks how many times you've read the book. I just started counting my books a few years ago. I definitely count each time I reread a book.

I had never noticed that! I guess I need to go back on some of my books and enter that. Thanks for pointing it out.

Kelly, I totally agree. I won't be doing a lot of re-reads, but there are some books I have recently picked up that I know I have read before but don't remember real well. I will definitely count those.

message 17: by alicia (new)

alicia grant (shesha556) I count my re-reads because i have forgotten alot of the details. It's like reading it for the first time.

Kelly Aless wrote: "I definitely count my re-reads. I re-read the Diary of Anne Frank (definitive edition) yearly, and I keep finding things I somehow missed."

Aless, I haven't read that since reading it in school (can't even remember what grade we read it in). I bought a brand new paperback last year and plan to (re)read it soon.

Lyn (Readinghearts) (lsmeadows) Tina - I like that mini challenge idea. I will have to keep that on my list to do at some point.

message 20: by Lindsay (new)

Lindsay (ljones08) | 24 comments I agree with most people that re-reads should count, since you put the time and effort in to read them.. I'm with the cover-to-cover counts idea!!

message 21: by Rayni (new)

Rayni | 135 comments One more thing to add to my personal challenge. Re-read one book a month.

message 22: by Morgan (last edited Dec 23, 2009 12:27PM) (new)

Morgan F (awesomeness1) I would count re-reads. I don't re-read books nearly as much as I would like to. Some new book sitting on my shelf always tempts me. I like the idea of re-reading a book once a month, I think it could help me see how my opinions have changed over time.

message 23: by Afsana (new)

Afsana (afsanaz) I had started a re-read challenge in sept 09 and have logged it as part of the book challenge group

Here is a link to it if you want to have a look!!

message 24: by Carolyn F. (new)

Carolyn F. I agree that re-reads should count, especially if you re-read the entire book.

message 25: by Rayni (new)

Rayni | 135 comments Afsana, I checked your link & looks like there is a new author out there I need to try, Alex Kava.

her book are good-start at the beginning

let me know what u think

message 27: by Rayni (new)

Rayni | 135 comments Ok, I hope I can find them at the library. I added her to my New Author mini challenge.

message 28: by Susan (new)

Susan (superbookfreak) | 115 comments I think that a re-read should be included. If you read the book through the end without missing some pages, that is considered reading.

message 29: by Carolyn F. (new)

Carolyn F. Susan wrote: "I think that a re-read should be included. If you read the book through the end without missing some pages, that is considered reading."

I agree with Susan.

message 30: by [deleted user] (new)

I agree with Susan, but I am also wondering if we should consider that the book has to be a RR (Re-Read) that has not been read for at least 6mths - 1yr?

message 31: by Susan (new)

Susan (superbookfreak) | 115 comments I agree with Ms. Erin, if it has been longer than six months or a year than it should count.

message 32: by Vanessa (new)

Vanessa (vanessamc) If you enjoy a book and really want to re-read it, I think it should count even if you've just read it the month before. If you don't let them count, but really want to make the 144 challenge then you either have to add that book and not make it part of your list, or you would have to give up re-reading a book you love. As long as it is read all the way through, I think it should be counted. After all, re-reading does mean you are giving up reading a new book instead and that's really a personal time decision.

message 33: by Kami (last edited Jan 02, 2010 02:41PM) (new)

Kami (katmiv) I'm a huge re-reader so I'm glad that the rules aren't going to bind me from adding them to my running list. It's like rewatching your favorite movie.

message 34: by Gina (new)

Gina (ginrobi) | 84 comments I agree with Lynn. As long as it's read, even re-read, from start to finish, without skimming, it's still considered reading an entire book.

Eudora Welty had a entire bookcase of mysteries that she reread when enough time had elapsed for her to forget the ending.
And William Faulkner read his favorite Russian authors yearly. (These Russian authors had an enormous influence on Faulkner's work.) The Brothers Karamazov was among the favorites that Faulkner read each year.
Therefore, if reading books again worked for Welty and Faulkner, why not for us?
