LynnB I started Dancing at the Rascal Fair by Ivan Doig. I've read some of his books before and absolutely love this author. He has an amazingly descriptive voice that doesn't drag you down in details, but sets a fantastic scene.

Betsy (ebburtis) | 1291 comments I started The Chapel: A Novel for no particular reason other than it was available at the downloadable library.

message 2557: by Juniper (new)

Juniper (jooniperd) i have two books on the go at the moment: Homesick, by Guy Vanderhaeghe, and The Secret Lives of Baba Segi's Wives (aka The Secret Lives of the Four Wives), by Lola Shoneyin. both are quite interesting so far.

I've had this one on my TBR list, but haven't gotten a copy yet. I'll be watching for your review of it :)

Betsy (ebburtis) | 1291 comments I'm starting Just Mercy: A Story of Justice and Redemption and The Sixth Extinction: An Unnatural History. The latter is for my book group and I had been on the holds list at the library for the former. Since my time is limited to read both of them (my book group is in a couple weeks, and I won't be able to renew Just Mercy due to the lengthy wait list), I splurged and got the Kindle version with Whispersync of Sixth Extinction. I have to say, being able to flip back and forth between e-book and audio book is pretty cool!

message 2564: by Juniper (new)

Juniper (jooniperd) i really loved 'the sixth extinction', betsy! i think it is a great choice for a book club discussion!!

message 2565: by LynnB (new)

LynnB The Nightingale which is WWII historical fiction.

message 2566: by Sera (new)

Sera | 1325 comments I really enjoyed the 6th extinction too!

message 2568: by Juniper (new)

Juniper (jooniperd) i am reading An Unnecessary Woman, by Rabih Alameddine. its... interesting. i haven't read a lot of literature set in beirut, but i'm not really int a groove with the story yet - he name drops a lot of authors and book titles, which would make a great reading list, but every time it happens, i get distracted. :)

I've had a major head cold the last two days and feel like my head's going to explode because it's so stuffed up :( so I haven't got much reading done on this book, but I am enjoying it for as far as I've gotten in it (1/3??).

message 2574: by Betsy (new)

Betsy (ebburtis) | 1291 comments I'm excited! I just went onto the digital library site and was able to grab the new Toni Morrison book God Help the Child on audio. My timing must have been such that I was on right after they posted it so it was available. That never happens to me! I'm also starting A Marker to Measure Drift on ebook.

I haven't read Child 44 but we went to see the movie last weekend. It hasn't gotten good reviews but we enjoyed it. Probably because we hadn't read the book so had nothing to compare it to.

message 2580: by Sera (new)

Sera | 1325 comments Child 44 was an outstanding read. In fact, the entire series was excellent. I didn't realize that the movie was out already! What a shame if they ruined it and missed an opportunity to do something great with this story.

Betsy (ebburtis) | 1291 comments Before you select your next book to start, take the May/June poll at the bottom of the main group page.

I've been planning to read that. It will be interesting to see how you feel about it when you get done. Maybe it's one of those that gets good "after the first 100 pages". It's definitely been getting good ratings.
