Sera | 1325 comments Jennifer, keep me posted on The Known World. I started it a few years ago, but put it back down, because I couldn't get into it and started reading other books.

i am finding The Known World to be interesting-odd. i am quite taken with a few of the characters and really want to know where it's all going. but i am finding jones' style can be repetitive and clunky - so the flow of the read has not been a good one for me. i have been wondering how much the omniscient narrator has to do with this? at the moment, i would prefer the voice of moses, say, or fern, to be telling us the story. but since i am not even to the halfway point, i am holding off my opinion since i am guessing jones has a reason and point to it. :)

Sera | 1325 comments I hope so, Jennifer. Now that I think of it, the writing was clunky for me, which is why I think that I recall having found slow-moving, and frankly, boring.

Sera | 1325 comments I started My Ántonia on audio. Cather can write a setting like nobody's business. The story is good at this point, but it's the writing that is keeping me interested in this one.

The storyline sounds similar to A Constellation of Vital Phenomena A Constellation of Vital Phenomena by Anthony Marra . Have you read that? I'd be interested in hearing a comparison.

No, I have not read this, but there could be some similarities in themes. I am enjoying some good writing regarding a dark chapter in Soviet history. I concede I know litte, other than broad historical facts, about Chernobyl. Learning more about history is one of the great things about historical fiction
I will have to take another look at "A Constellation...". It sounds very good.

Betsy (ebburtis) | 1291 comments Started Rules of Civility on audio.

Also doing a quick reread of Regeneration for my book group. I read this several years ago and really liked it, so it's a pleasure to revisit it. We are pairing this with some World War I poetry as Wilfred Owen, Sassoon Siegfried Sassoon and other wartime poets play significant roles in the novel.
