Jamaie | 17 comments I'm about 5 chapters into Let the Great World Spin by Colum McCann . I am really liking it...I'm thinking I'm going to see several different stories in one book that are going on during an event.

message 203: by Jaime (new)

Jaime | 216 comments I just caved and started reading The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo (Millennium, #1) by Stieg Larsson The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo. Honestly, the plot doesn't sound interesting to me at all and it's not something I would ever typically pick up to read. So many people I know have raved about it, though, that I thought I would give it a try. It remains to be seen if I actually stick with it!

message 204: by Cathy (new)

Cathy I'm just starting Major Pettigrew's Last Stand by Helen Simonson Major Pettigrew's Last Stand. I've heard such good things about it, I'm really looking forward to it!

Keep us posted on what you think. I, too have read rave reviews, but the storyline of any of his books just don't interest me....

Patti | 137 comments I am with you Jaime. I am on my third attempt to read this book.

message 207: by Melissa (new)

Melissa The first 50-60 pages are very slow. Once the character of Lisbeth gets going, it is fabulous and goes very quickly.

LynnB Melissa wrote: "The first 50-60 pages are very slow. Once the character of Lisbeth gets going, it is fabulous and goes very quickly."

Totally agree -- those first 50-60 are killers. Then the story gets good.

Patti | 137 comments Okay I am going to give it another try. Thanks you guys!

I've been listening to this book during my commute and absolutely love it. I'm an Anglophile, anyway, and the dry humor really appeals to me. The reader does a wonderful job.

message 211: by Patti (new)

Patti | 137 comments I just put this on my list for the library.

Stephanie Jaime wrote: "I just caved and started reading The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo (Millennium #1) by Stieg Larsson The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo. Honestly, the plot doesn't sound interesting to me at all and it..."

Stick with it! I started it once and took it back to the library and was prodded into reading it again. After wading through the first 50 or so pages, I discovered a wonderfully written, literary mystery. I just finished it and can't wait to read the next two books. It is graphic at times (the original title is Men Who Hate Women) so be prepared.

Ooooo, didn't realize that about the title! It is getting better. For me, it got better shortly after the introduction of Lisbeth Salander's character.

I am past page 50 and still struggling to connect with any character. Am I hopeless?

message 216: by [deleted user] (new)

I started Broken for You Broken for You by Stephanie Kallos . Wow, it's interesting. I wasn't sure if I'd be able to get into it at first, but after the first few chapters it really grabbed me.

Betsy (ebburtis) | 1291 comments I just started reading
Still Alice by Lisa Genova Still Alice
for my July book group meeting. It's about a 50 yo Harvard professor who is diagnosed with early onset Alzheimers. It's like watching a train wreck - upsetting, but I can't pull myself away. One of my greatest fears is getting Alzheimers, so this is really pushing my buttons.

After witnessing my mother's losing battle with Alzheimers, this is one topic that I can't deal with in literature.

Keep going! I was really sucked in around page 100. I know that is still fifty pages to go, but I really think this series is worth it. I hear each book gets better and better.

message 227: by Stephanie (new)

Stephanie I started Hidden Wives by Claire Avery Hidden Wives which is a really fantastic first novel by Claire Avery about a polygamist sect. It is a surprising page-turner with characters you root for from page one. I am really enjoying the book.

Not sure where this came from (Swaptree? Goodwill? Yard sale?) but I am really enjoying it. Makes me want to try to write a short story. I finished Such a Pretty Fat (Jen Lancaster), started wandering around the house looking for my next read, and stumbled on a gem.

Betsy (ebburtis) | 1291 comments I've just finished up some rather heavy and thought provoking books, so I just started The Fixer Upper: A Novel by Mary Kay Andrews as a break. Mary Kay Andrews is one of my guilty pleasures; her books are always entertaining and quick.

The second was was more brutal in my opinion. It's usually not my cup of tea, but I am going to read the third one because I like the characters and want to see what happens.

NancyL Luckey Thanks, Sara and Christine. There are so many other books on my "to read" list, I'll just skip those.

message 250: by Patti (new)

Patti | 137 comments I agree Sara. I didn't care for this book at all. I realize that I am in the minority.
