LynnB I'm in the middle of The Invention of Wings which I'm really enjoying. It's one of our chosen books for April/May, so I figured I better get it read soon :) I'm always leary of Oprah-chosen books as I don't always like them, but this one is good.

Sera | 1325 comments Have you read The Secret Life of Bees by Sue Monk Kidd ? Great book. I also want to read Kidd's latest.

message 2253: by Betsy (new)

Betsy (ebburtis) | 1291 comments I've started
Kings of the Earth by Jon Clinch

I'm not sure why, but there's something about it that reminds me of Ethan Frome by Edith Wharton . It's something more than the upstate NY connection.

Teresa I am currently reading my first Chris Bohjalian book, "Midwives" and am enjoying his writing style. Has anyone read any of his other books that you would recommend?

I am a huge Chris Bohjalian fan….Skeletons at the Feast was very good & he had one that was a little different for him, a little creepy, but so good-The Night Strangers…..The Sandcastle Girls was also very good….

message 2256: by Teresa (new)

Teresa Thank you, Becky! I'll definitely add those titles to my to-read list.

message 2257: by Victoria (new)

Victoria (vicki_c) I've read 4-5 of his I think. The Sandcastle Girls I think is the best I've read.

Like Becky, I'd recommend Skeletons at the Feast and The Sandcastle Girls. Both were very good. Midwives is the book that got me started reading his books, too.

I've read Secrets of Eden by Chris Bohjalian and The Law of Similars by Chris Bohjalian and gave each 4 stars.

Teresa I started "Moloka'i" by Alan Brennert today. I attended one of my mother's book group meetings when visiting her & they were discussing this book. I bought it shortly afterwards.

I liked Trans-Sister Radio by Chris Bohjalian but it's not for everyone. It's about a transgender woman. It was very thought provoking.

I've read [boo..."

I'd completely forgotten about Law... I read that one too. Similar themes to Midwives, if I remember correctly. I also read Double Bind. Didn't like that one as much in part because it was remarkably similar to a book I had read right before it. I have on my shelf, but haven't read his more recent books. I find his books sort of similar to Jodi Picoult - tackling the issue of the day.

message 2268: by Becky (last edited May 30, 2014 07:50PM) (new)

Becky (beckymurr) Betsy-Chris has been doing some more historical type books( The Sandcastle Girls, Skeletons at the Feast & his most recent, The Light in the Ruins )& even a scary/creepy one( The Night Strangers)….I don't see the Jodi Picoult comparison...

Our book group read this in April. Such a good story and well researched. Would highly recommend.

Good to know. That will make me push his up on the list. Not that I don't like Jodi Picoult (or Chris' earlier work) but I feel like that trope starts to feel formulaic and I end up letting them linger at the bottom of the pile.

message 2271: by Becky (new)

Becky (beckymurr) I understand what you meant about Jodi-I like her but there is a formula…I personally have never felt that with Chris…

Betsy (ebburtis) | 1291 comments I'm trying to figure out a way to break up with my current book group. Has anyone ever done that? I've started Life After Life by Kate Atkinson because I am checking out a different book group in July when my current one doesn't meet.

You'd think it would be as easy as just not going, but it's not. I'm the member with the longest tenure and I've fallen into the role of organizer. So it's complicated. And now I'll be a book club cheater on top of it!

LynnB Betsy wrote: "I'm trying to figure out a way to break up with my current book group. Has anyone ever done that? ..."

I have - about 2 years ago. I was nervous how they'd react, but I just said that I wasn't finding the chosen books fit in with what I wanted to read. (Also they really weren't on the same reading discussion "wavelength" as me, though I didn't mention that.) I was also one of the originals and an organizer in the group which is why I felt uncomfortable dropping out. But I did, and it wasn't as difficult as I thought it might be. Don't be hesitant so that they try to get you to stay. Just clearly, and nicely, let them know that you will be leaving the club as it's time to move on. Good luck and I hope it works out as well for you as it did for me.
