The Hired Man (historical fiction),
Book of Ages: The Life and Opinions of Jane Franklin (biography) and
Firefly Summer (fiction).

Reading Growing Up Dead in Texas
part memoir/part fictionMy great abyss
My Bright Abyss: Meditation of a Modern Believer non-fiction
I read that during the year and enjoyed it a lot. I kept remembering the interview Elie Wiesel gave Oprah and related it to the book.
I planned to start
a few days ago, but got distracted and didn't, so that's what I'm starting tonight.
I started Swamplanida, Swamplandia!
and I'm having serious doubts I'll be able to finish it. I'm not quite a hundred pages in, and I just. don't. care.

After all the raves, I felt like I should want to read it, but it didn't sound at all appealing to me, just weird. Now I can move on and leave it off my TBR list with no regrets. Thank you Cheryl and Sera!

I just didn't find it appealing to read at all and stopped after a chapter or two. I'm glad to see I'm not the only one!
The funny thing is that the story goes off to a different place than where it started and it is not a good place. Some of what happened made me very uncomfortable. Yes, I give a big thumb's up for skipping it.

I'm glad I got it from the library and didn't buy it. oy.
I'm part way through Amy Tan's The Valley of Amazement,
and so far, I'm underwhelmed. I really liked the Joy Luck Club. Currently, not doing well in the 'reading now' department. :)
Cheryl, I feel that way about the book I started this week. I loved Jaime Ford's "Hotel on the Corner of Bitter & Sweet" but am really having a hard time getting into "Songs of Willow Frost" although I'm on page155 already. I don't feel the same about his second book.
Oh no! I'm sorry to hear about the Tan and Ford books. I'll guess I'll won't be in a rush to get those books read.I'm hearing excellent buzz on
from my GR friends so I'm bumping that one up the list.

. It's very different from
. It did take me a little (emphasize "little") to get the rhythm of the book, but I thoroughly was taken by it in the end.
I'm ashamed that I have yet to read a book by Amy Tan, but that will change. I do know that I own
and I think at least one more.
Sera wrote: "Oh no! I'm sorry to hear about the Tan and Ford books. I'll guess I'll won't be in a rush to get those books readTan's book is uneven. I did finish it, but I guess I expected more from a book that's 589 pages. Parts of it pulled me in and parts of it I skimmed through.

f..."Good to know, Linda. Thanks for providing another point of view.
Joy Luck Club is Tan's best in my opinion so it's a great place to start.
I've liked most of Amy Tan's books and I really enjoyed Ford's
. I did like
better, I think, but they are both really good reads.
Becky, are you reading that for the UVA MOOC? I enjoyed that book more than I thought I would. I'm reading
now and then I will have read all 5 of the novels for that class.
Oh sorry! Quite a few folks in my other active Goodreads group are taking an online (free) course through the University of Virginia and that book is one of the required reading items. I hadn't seen anyone else reading it that's not in that class! It's a historical fiction class called "Plagues, Witches & War - something Historical Fiction". It's been a great class.
Oh ok, thanks for explaining!! This is a book I have owned since Borders went out of business & it is also included in a challenge in my main Goodreads book group…we had to pick a 5 star book from one of our friends lists, so I tried to pick ones I owned previous to 1/1/13!!
Nancy wrote: "Recently started The Goldfinch. Am about 200 pages in and not sure where it's going."I'm on page 500 and feel the same way, but it has grabbed me. Big time.
Didn't know where to post this, so I picked here:Amazon has the following for $2.99 each, kindle version, today only. Great deals.

Funny, I was thinking the same thing. I bought Goldfinch and Burial Rites. Should I be getting The Son too? I have it on my TBR list, but when I saw it was over 800 pages, I balked.
The Son was good. I only gave it 3 stars I think, but that's mostly because western themes aren't usually my thing. I think it's better than 3 stars. It's worth $3.
I continue to slog my way through Warmth of Other Suns (it's good, but I've had a hard time getting through it). Last night went to see Catching Fire (I have read that and Hunger Games) and raced home to start

I loved the wedding dress scene!
Started One Mississippi
, was suggested by a friend & has been sitting on my shelf for ages….Hooked right in!
I may be losing my mind. Today I started
on audio. It's read by Simon Vance. I got about 10 minutes in and I think I have not only read this before, but listened to it before! Vance's voice is so distinctive and his portrayal of the voices seemed so familiar, although the story itself wasn't really ringing any bells. The part that makes me think I'm losing my mind is that it is not on my "read" list, and it's not even on my TBR list. I searched the posts here thinking I would have posted it here - nope! I've gone through all the audio books I've read to see if it could be a different book and there's nothing close. So weird. But it's probably the only time I'll be able to post the same book in both the Books I've Started and Books I've Finished boards on the same day.
Started
on audio and picked up
at the library tonight. Yes, Girl Scouts is about more than the cookies.
Started
. Immediately disturbing, this is the first person (fictional) account from a high school boy who is planning to shoot classmates and then himself. But it has grabbed me. The main character is compelling so far.
