Teresa I just started "Night" by Elie Wiesel Night (The Night Trilogy, #1) by Elie Wiesel .

message 2008: by Miriam (new)

Miriam (chkntza) I read that during the year and enjoyed it a lot. I kept remembering the interview Elie Wiesel gave Oprah and related it to the book.

message 2009: by LynnB (new)

LynnB I planned to start The Hired Man by Aminatta Forna a few days ago, but got distracted and didn't, so that's what I'm starting tonight.

Cheryl (cherylrussell) I started Swamplanida, Swamplandia! Swamplandia! by Karen Russell and I'm having serious doubts I'll be able to finish it. I'm not quite a hundred pages in, and I just. don't. care.

Oy, what a mess. In my opinion, this book gets worse as it goes on,

I'm so glad to hear some don't like it. After all the raves, I felt like I should want to read it, but it didn't sound at all appealing to me, just weird. Now I can move on and leave it off my TBR list with no regrets. Thank you Cheryl and Sera!

I started this one once and had the same reaction. I just didn't find it appealing to read at all and stopped after a chapter or two. I'm glad to see I'm not the only one!

Sera | 1325 comments The funny thing is that the story goes off to a different place than where it started and it is not a good place. Some of what happened made me very uncomfortable. Yes, I give a big thumb's up for skipping it.

And the votes are in...the book went back to the library today. Thanks for the input LynnB and Sera. :) Betsy--wise move in scratching it off your list. I'm glad I got it from the library and didn't buy it. oy.

Cheryl (cherylrussell) I'm part way through Amy Tan's The Valley of Amazement, The Valley of Amazement by Amy Tan and so far, I'm underwhelmed. I really liked the Joy Luck Club. Currently, not doing well in the 'reading now' department. :)

message 2017: by Teresa (new)

Teresa Cheryl, I feel that way about the book I started this week. I loved Jaime Ford's "Hotel on the Corner of Bitter & Sweet" but am really having a hard time getting into "Songs of Willow Frost" although I'm on page155 already. I don't feel the same about his second book.

Karen | 87 comments I just started The Kingmaker's Daughter (The Cousins' War #4) by Philippa Gregory

message 2019: by Sera (new)

Sera | 1325 comments Oh no! I'm sorry to hear about the Tan and Ford books. I'll guess I'll won't be in a rush to get those books read.

I'm hearing excellent buzz on The Goldfinch by Donna Tartt from my GR friends so I'm bumping that one up the list.

I still really liked Songs of Willow Frost by Jamie Ford . It's very different from Hotel on the Corner of Bitter and Sweet by Jamie Ford .

It did take me a little (emphasize "little") to get the rhythm of the book, but I thoroughly was taken by it in the end.

I'm ashamed that I have yet to read a book by Amy Tan, but that will change. I do know that I own The Joy Luck Club by Amy Tan and I think at least one more.

Tan's book is uneven. I did finish it, but I guess I expected more from a book that's 589 pages. Parts of it pulled me in and parts of it I skimmed through.

Good to know, Linda. Thanks for providing another point of view.

Joy Luck Club is Tan's best in my opinion so it's a great place to start.

message 2024: by LynnB (new)

LynnB I've liked most of Amy Tan's books and I really enjoyed Ford's Songs of Willow Frost by Jamie Ford . I did like Hotel on the Corner of Bitter and Sweet by Jamie Ford better, I think, but they are both really good reads.

Becky (beckymurr) starting…. The Physick Book of Deliverance Dane by Katherine Howe

message 2026: by Victoria (new)

Victoria (vicki_c) Becky, are you reading that for the UVA MOOC? I enjoyed that book more than I thought I would. I'm reading The Ghost Bride by Yangsze Choo now and then I will have read all 5 of the novels for that class.

message 2027: by Becky (new)

Becky (beckymurr) Victoria, I am not sure what that means LOL

message 2028: by Victoria (new)

Victoria (vicki_c) Oh sorry! Quite a few folks in my other active Goodreads group are taking an online (free) course through the University of Virginia and that book is one of the required reading items. I hadn't seen anyone else reading it that's not in that class! It's a historical fiction class called "Plagues, Witches & War - something Historical Fiction". It's been a great class.

message 2029: by Becky (new)

Becky (beckymurr) Oh ok, thanks for explaining!! This is a book I have owned since Borders went out of business & it is also included in a challenge in my main Goodreads book group…we had to pick a 5 star book from one of our friends lists, so I tried to pick ones I owned previous to 1/1/13!!

I'm on page 500 and feel the same way, but it has grabbed me. Big time.

Victoria (vicki_c) Didn't know where to post this, so I picked here:

Amazon has the following for $2.99 each, kindle version, today only. Great deals.

The Son by Philipp Meyer
The Goldfinch by Donna Tartt
Burial Rites by Hannah Kent

Funny, I was thinking the same thing. I bought Goldfinch and Burial Rites. Should I be getting The Son too? I have it on my TBR list, but when I saw it was over 800 pages, I balked.

message 2034: by Victoria (new)

Victoria (vicki_c) The Son was good. I only gave it 3 stars I think, but that's mostly because western themes aren't usually my thing. I think it's better than 3 stars. It's worth $3.

message 2035: by LynnB (last edited Dec 03, 2013 10:35PM) (new)

LynnB I've got 3 books going at the moment: Travels with Charley In Search of America by John Steinbeck (memoir/classic); The Signature of All Things by Elizabeth Gilbert (fiction); and
C. S. Lewis A Life Eccentric Genius, Reluctant Prophet by Alister E. McGrath (biography).

Betsy (ebburtis) | 1291 comments I may be losing my mind. Today I started A Spot of Bother by Mark Haddon on audio. It's read by Simon Vance. I got about 10 minutes in and I think I have not only read this before, but listened to it before! Vance's voice is so distinctive and his portrayal of the voices seemed so familiar, although the story itself wasn't really ringing any bells. The part that makes me think I'm losing my mind is that it is not on my "read" list, and it's not even on my TBR list. I searched the posts here thinking I would have posted it here - nope! I've gone through all the audio books I've read to see if it could be a different book and there's nothing close. So weird. But it's probably the only time I'll be able to post the same book in both the Books I've Started and Books I've Finished boards on the same day.

Betsy (ebburtis) | 1291 comments Started Forgive Me, Leonard Peacock by Matthew Quick . Immediately disturbing, this is the first person (fictional) account from a high school boy who is planning to shoot classmates and then himself. But it has grabbed me. The main character is compelling so far.
