It's good so far but a little slow for me. I am beginning to think that the "coming of age" theme is not my thing.

Sera | 1325 comments I am finally getting around to reading House of Leaves by Mark Z. Danielewski .

message 1955: by Victoria (new)

Victoria (vicki_c) Sera - I never even heard of that book until a few days ago. I can't decide from the GR reviews if it sounds worthwhile or not. Some reviews make me think of Night Film (which is in my to read pile).

It's a tough call, Victoria. The book is definitely a tome. Have you read Infinite Jest by David Foster Wallace ? It reminds me of that, because of the tiny print and loads of footnotes, which are integral to the story.

message 1965: by Cathy (new)

Cathy | 482 comments I have just begun The People in the Trees by Hanya Yanagihara on my Kindle. It has been said that those who enjoyed State of Wonder by Ann Patchett and The Poisonwood Bible by Barbara Kingsolver will find this of the same likeness. I enjoyed Patchett's and Kingsolver's works, so I hope this story is just as good.

message 1966: by Betsy (new)

Victoria (vicki_c) I just finished that last night Lynn, I liked it a lot. I have not read his other book, but heard good things about it as well. I'll have to add it to my TBR pile if it's not already there somewhere!

Betsy (ebburtis) | 1291 comments Just started Doc by Mary Doria Russell on audio. Also starting The Warmth of Other Suns The Epic Story of America's Great Migration by Isabel Wilkerson . I had mentioned that I thought this would be a good nonfiction companion to The Twelve Tribes of Hattie by Ayana Mathis and I was able to get it from the library, so I wanted to read it while Twelve Tribes was still a little fresh in my mind.

Cathy | 482 comments Sera wrote: "I'm also starting Swamplandia! by Karen Russell on audio."

I also read this one on audio awhile ago. I liked the dark, edgey story. I recently finished Joyland by Stephen King and that story reminded me of the strangeness similar in ways, or maybe just reminiscent of the dark tone of Swamplandia! by Karen Russell .

Interesting, Cathy, when Stephen King used to write for Entertainment Weekly, he picked Swamplandia as one of his best books of the year. Maybe it inspired him to write Joyland?

Beautiful writing but I can't "like" this book at all….a pedophile is a pedophile no matter how beautifully the story is written….I can't wait to finish it & be done with it….
