Betsy (ebburtis) | 1291 comments Picking up The Particular Sadness of Lemon Cake by Aimee Bender tonight. I'm going to the beach tomorrow and the iPad doesn't do well in that bright light, so I need an actual book to take with me.

I'm curious to see what you think of this one, Betsy. I really enjoyed it.

message 1905: by LynnB (new)

LynnB I'm reading short stories Full Dark, No Stars by Stephen King , mystery The Last Child by John Hart and non-fiction The Tent of Abraham Stories of Hope and Peace for Jews, Christians, and Muslims by Joan D. Chittister . Just bouncing between books as I feel motivated.

message 1906: by Cathy (new)

Cathy | 482 comments I am just beginning Ordinary Grace by William Kent Krueger ...looks interesting.

message 1907: by LynnB (new)

LynnB I gave up on Full Dark, No Stars by Stephen King as just gruesome and uninteresting ... but I started The Leopard (Harry Hole, #8) by Jo Nesbø which is also gruesome, but a great series.

message 1908: by Miriam (new)

Miriam (chkntza) I just started Chocolate Chip Cookie Murder by Joanne Fluke. It's light and fun so far.

I'm just a small way into it, but I like it so far. By the way, I hadn't realized until this morning that the book is actually by both Tom Franklin and his wife, poet Beth Ann Fennelly.

That's interesting, Lynn. I'll be curious to see how her poet status impacts the prose of the book.

message 1922: by Betsy (new)

Betsy (ebburtis) | 1291 comments Started The Last Summer of the Camperdowns by Elizabeth Kelly on audio today. I'm not sure I will like it. Somehow dysfunctional family portraits are easier for me to read than listen to.

message 1923: by Becky (new)

Becky (beckymurr) started The Little Book by Selden Edwards , been on my shelf forever!

message 1924: by Betsy (new)

Betsy (ebburtis) | 1291 comments After listening to over an hour of The Last Summer of the Camperdowns I gave it up. Didn't like the reader and didn't connect to the characters. Started Lost and Found by Carolyn Parkhurst on audio and was immediately drawn in.

message 1933: by Miriam (new)

Miriam (chkntza) I just started Son of a Witch by Gregory MaGuire. It is creative and entertaining. He took an old story and set it in contemporary language.

message 1934: by Betsy (new)

Betsy (ebburtis) | 1291 comments I'm reading City of Light by Lauren Belfer for my book group. Do not be fooled, this is not about Paris (note it's not "lights" plural), but Buffalo, NY!

message 1935: by Victoria (new)

Victoria (vicki_c) That is a wonderful book! I am a Buffalo native, so a bit biased, but I loved it.

message 1936: by Becky (new)

Becky (beckymurr) I added it to my list!

message 1937: by Victoria (new)

Victoria (vicki_c) I just started The Monster of Florence by Douglas Preston (literally, I have only read the character list and the introduction). The character list alone is stunning in its complexity and already suggests some serious investigative problems. I will reserve final judgment until I finish the book though. I also did not realize the story was so contemporary. For some reason, I thought it was set mid-century, not recently.

Victoria (vicki_c) Ok, finished The Monster of Florence. I almost couldn't put it down but had to sleep and work today! What a great book. I almost gave it one of my elusive 5 star ratings, but settled on 4.

Yes, I'm a super fast reader when I'm focused. As a kid, if my parents got a book for me while we were out, often I had it 1/2 done or more before we got home!

message 1944: by Sera (new)

Sera | 1325 comments LOL - that's awesome, Victoria.
