@ Sera - I'm still reading it; it's a bit slow because there is a lot to consider and it's form simply determines (for me, at least) a slow read. It's mostly about Galielo, but set around the letters from his oldest daughter (a nun) to him. They had a busy correspondence, but his letters to her were lost or destroyed over time. The author translated the letters and uses them through the narrative of his life at the proper time points. So far it's been an interesting biography.

Cathy | 482 comments After stopping at the library yesterday and viewing a display of past Newbery winners through the years I was reminded of so many good children literature books that I so fondly remember. When my son was younger we read, or should I say re-read for me, From the Mixed-Up Files of Mrs. Basil E. Frankweiler by E.L. Konigsburg . Another of my very favorites sat in the case, so while I wait for my requested book to arrive I downloaded one other winner that I so much loved as a kid to revisit as an adult..... Shadow of a Bull by Maia Wojciechowska . Very cool to be sitting with it again. I hope this comment helps all of us remember many of those special books of our youth that are like old friends never forgotten and fondly cherished.

LynnB I've started reading Flatland A Romance of Many Dimensions by Edwin A. Abbott (a short classic) and Fateful Harvest The True Story of a Small Town, a Global Industry, and a Toxic Secret by Duff Wilson .
Fateful Harvest: The True Story of a Small Town, a Global Industry, and a Toxic Secret is very easy to read and very important to read if you eat any food, fertilize your lawn or garden, OR live in a rural area. Very scary, but a true story.

message 1896: by Robin P (new)

Robin P After falling in love with "Miss Fisher's Murder Mysteries" on PBS, I am reading my way through the series by Kerry Greenwood on which it is based. Phryne Fisher is a flapper with great clothes and accessories, including a pearl-handled revolver. She drives a fabulous car, flies planes, knows martial arts, and regularly takes beautiful young men to her bed. Most books are only about 150 pages, so it is really increasing my number of books read. I am enjoying them a lot. There are a number of differences with the TV series but so far I think the choices made for TV were good ones. Apparently the author was involved in developing the series.

message 1897: by Miriam (new)

Miriam (chkntza) I just stared The Boy in the Suit Case by Lene Kaaberbol and Agnete Friis. It is very good, fast paced, and suspenseful. I wish books that are translated from another language would come with a pronunciation guide for names.
